Hey there everyone, I just found this forum, the link was provided in a Just for Homeschooling Families Newsletter and I just had to come over and see everything.

I have been drawing since birth, lol, and I love it.

What I draw:
I'm really great about being able to look at a picture of something, or someone and copy what I see, ......like I'm wonderful with faces and anything that has dimension and contrast, but I'm horrible at simple pictures, black line drawings and and not so good at creating my own stuff.....

I find it soooo simple to recreate what someone else has already drawn or taken a picture of, but trying to make my own stuff without looking at something is driving me crazy!

I'm here because I want to learn more about how to create my own style...lol, or find it for that matter.

I'm really interested in learning how to draw simple pictures that children can color, like coloring book style, of people and places and objects. I'd like to eventually put the pictures up for children on my website to print free .

So I'm wondering really where to start on these lessons, to learn how to draw black and white outline drawings of people? Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks, for any help you can provide. I'm looking forward to uploading some of my drawings....just have to unpack them smile.gif

Hello!
Brian David Dekter
Hi Valerie, welcome to Drawspace.

I am no expert on this and you probably have been drawing longer then me....I think simple every day practise and drawing from still life can greatly improve drawing from imagination. I find most artists need some form of reference to draw from even Cartoonists.....every artist seems to have his own approach to drawing, some like to draw sketchy some like to draw with hard solid lines and some like to draw soft and gracefully.....no write or wrong way in that sense....I think eventually you will slip into your own style.....if you are interested in people I would recommend figure drawing lessons and focus on people in section H....Brenda's lesson's has helped me draw things I never imagined I could draw....and I would also check out the weekly draw challenges under forums general discussion.....there are also some fantastic people around here that can give you great guidance. I look forward to seeing your drawings and glad if I helped....

all the best, Brian.

Hi and welcome to the forum. smile.gif

In over 30 years of drawing, I have yet to find a person who can draw a decent picture out of their imagination. They all need references to get the process going. The basic shapes are defined then enhanced from there.

So don't frustrate yourself by trying to create something without any background information. The professionals don't. Your own style will come in time. You'll slip into it without even realizing it.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! I forgot to bookmark this place so it took me a while to get back here!

That's reassuring to know that even experts need reference in order to draw, man, I kept thinking.....why don't I remember how that looks? lol

I'll check out section H and see what's in there!

Yeah, right now my style is very sketchy, and detailed......but to make the coloring pages I want to learn more black line type of stlye (which is hard for me because I tend to over detail images!

I'm going to go look for my drawings from high-school, and post them soon!

Thanks again for the help! Can't wait to dig in to all the resources here!

In Christ,

Valerie
