Full Version: Weekly Drawing Challenge
Drawspace > General > General discussion

Firstly... Hello, everyone! biggrin.gif

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

[attachmentid=9128] [attachmentid=9129] I made this photo on the Hill of Three Crosses. More information about it is here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hill_of_Three_Crosses

[attachmentid=9130] [attachmentid=9131] Two persimmons smile.gif

[attachmentid=9132] [attachmentid=9133] Actually, it's a hive. Bees get into it through it's mouth. When you stand near it feels like this statue is always humming laugh.gif I made this photo in Aukštaitija National Park. In honeymaking museum. (Just if you're interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auk%C5%A1taitija_National_Park )

[attachmentid=9134] [attachmentid=9135] I don't remember where I found this one. I think it is in Aukštaitija National Park too. I just love Lithuanian arts and crafts.

[attachmentid=9136] [attachmentid=9137] This is Perkūnas. He has a lot of names in Lithuanian language. We also call him Patrimpas and Pikulis. You can read about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C4%93rkons

I hope you like these pictures. Can't wait to see your drawings! rolleyes.gif

Excellent photos - and we get to know what we are drawing too
Ernest Friedman-Hill
I rather like how this came out!

Cees
Had the same idea as Mr. Hill. I took the head of the girl, mainly because the face is carved smooth and the rest is a little rougher.

I tried to get this effect in my drawing. Also this is the first time ever I tried to make a portrait.
siksnosparnyte
Thanks, Lance500!

Ernest, your drawing is very good. I love the sketchyness of it. smile.gif

Cees, are you sure that it's your first try? Looks good! smile.gif Only thing that I could suggest is: don't be afraid of darks. And try to avoid lines. Remember: there are no lines, just shadows and highlights smile.gif

Thank you for your comment.
What I tried to achieve are the carving marks in the hair and the neck. In that case I thought there are some harder lines (or shadows). Also in the reference photo these changes in tone are quite abrupt and not as smooth as in the face area.

Ernest - this is BEAUTIFUL, Love the crop and the way you captured the details!!! cool.gif

Cees - STUNNING, Loove this drawing and happen to agree with siksnosparnyte, that you could add some darks which would really finish the drawing perfectly!!!! cool.gif
Lance500
Charcoal and white conte pencil on printer paper - about an hour. Never used white before.

Cees, I didn't speak about the hair and neck smile.gif They're sketchy. It's OK. I was talking about those lines which make basic outline of your drawing. When the drawing is finished (If it's not just a sketch) they shouldn't be visible smile.gif

Lance500, great drawing! That photo is my favourite rolleyes.gif

Thank you, now I understand what you mean and you are correct. Will keep an eye on this in the future.

I'm happy to help, Cees smile.gif

Fabulous drawing, Kaly. Is it really so light or is it your scanner? And I'm just curious.... What size your drawing is?

Thanks,
I do tend to draw light, my biggest strugle is to go dark!! Guess it has to do with my name ( "Clara" in english means light) biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif but my scanner doesn't help eigther. Its in A4 printer paper but does only cover about half the page blush.gif I guess it's too small.

Don't worry. I think you just need some time to get used to black. I had the same problem earlier. It dissapeared by itself smile.gif And your drawing isn't too smal. Only one difference that I can see between small and big drawings is that in a biger drawing it's easier to draw all the details. smile.gif
Maire
Great drawings Ernest, Cees, Lance500 and Kaly....

This is just a sketch with some detail blocked in - I have a shoulder injury sad.gif and found I couldn't finish it.

Cheers.....Maire

Beautiful drawing, Maire. That woman seems popular biggrin.gif
Cyn
I hate to miss challenges, so this morning I did 3 quick 15 minute things and scanned them together. Pretty bad, but I tried the ones that were not yet drawn. wacko.gif

Welcome! You did a nice job capturing the "woodenness". That's the challenge in drawing a statue: it's easy to pretend you're drawing the subject of the statue, which spoils the effect. You avoided that trap nicely here.
mrstarstuff
I love them all and admire all your talents. I'm not participating because I'm only working in digital with Artweaver and Gimp draw/paint programs. I hope to join this thread when I can get some art supplies.
