Full Version: Do you live in an apartment?
Drawspace > General > General discussion

Usually when I draw, I unfold my card table, and set my tools, book, and paper out. When I am through for the day, I fold the table back up and stick it behind my dresser, the only place it fits when folded up.

The art set-up is doable, but not the best. My apple-box of general art supplies (temperas and water colors, brushes, and colored pencil box) is under my eating table. My art instruction books and drawing pads are under there, too.

There is no way I want to move from a one-bedroom apt. to a 2 bedroom, which would be ideal. But I can't afford a 2-bedroom in my building, and don't want to leave my building for another locale, since I'm real happy here.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Has anyone solved their space problem in an apartment, and made room for your drawing space? I have a computer corner, and a cat tree, too. I'm gradually getting rid of stuff. One thing I may do is get a newer, light-weight TV and set up a drawing space where the TV is now, find somewhere to stash the TV most of the time. I have another TV in the bedroom where I can watch videos, and the only time I use the living room TV is when I have a friend or friends over to watch a video -- 2-3 times a year, maybe.

Have a house full of stuff so I know what you mean.. mat board behind the china closet 18" paper cutter on the dinning table.. or under the server if I put it away..
As to the TV, the new small LCD units can be had frairly cheap not, compared to what they were even a year ago. These can be mounted on the wall or the edge of a desk or table on a movable arm. Just do a google for LCD TV mounts .. this was the first link returned.

I would goto dickblick and do a search for "drawing boards" they are perfect a lot of them come with clamps to hold the paper - and some even give the option of raising and lowering the elevation.

That’s a good suggestion by Jimmer. Another thing that could help you is one of those things that hold incomplete jig-saws which you can just fold up when your finished for the night

I empathize with the no space for art. I have, tucked into the corner of the living room a small (and I do mean small) secretary style desk. When closed the footprint is 33 x 18 inches. It has a separate piece that I currently put inside the desk, but could easily be stored on top of the desk as well that has cubby holes and small drawers. I regularly change what I'm working on since there is no room to spread out. My paper supplies sit on top, along with my sketch books and a good desk lamp. The cubby holes and drawers hold pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, reference books and my needle felting supples (but not the wool). The area between the desk and the wall holds my larger paper and a masonite drawing board. The colored pencils, poor babies are in the tins and boxes they were bought in and tucked under the desk when not in use. So, I can draw, either pencil or colored pencil, or water color pencil. Or, I can use my laptop computer, or I can do my needle felting projects. The most important thing for me was a comfortable desk chair to go with the set up since I'm sitting a lot. But, that's my little corner of the world. Less than 3 feet by 2 feet. Sometimes it's a little crowded and 've found it's better to take the colored pencils that I want for a project out of their boxes and temporarily place them in a coffee mug or two while I work on the drawing. When the laptop has to be put aside, I either plop it on top of the sketch books or set it on the floor propped up against the inside leg of the desk next to the large drawing paper. When I go large on a drawing I use the masonite drawing board in my lap propped against the open secretary desk surface, so I'm a little farther back in my chair. Hope that helps give you some ideas.

I have my art stuff up and ready at all times ...I have a art board I clip my drawings I am working on too .. and my pencils are always within reach and I have good lighting ...its all at my desk that my laptop is on .
If I had to get stuff out each time I do not think I would draw as much .
I do not have alot of space in my home its not like its big ..but I have made a spot for my things in my room .

All my stuff is tucked away in shoe boxes and desk drawers. My kids LOVE art supplies. We can't keep up with them right now, so we have piles (literally piles) of crayon drawings, water color doodles, chalk scribbles, pencil scratch drawings, and so on... I do my best to keep the really creative stuff and just toss the truly experimental stuff in the trash.

To the say the least, I try to keep my stuff isolated from the kids stuff because they are crafty these days (I encourage it big time). It's a mess, but I love to see them use their imagination (a.k.a. turn off the TV).

If I had an "art corner" (like Kim's) I think I'd draw much more often. Some of my motivation issues is digging out all my stuff.

When I first found drawspace.com all I had was a table... Litteraly. I grew up in Belgium and met my wife, Katherin, online about 5 years ago. She was living in Canada with her parents, taking care of them as her father had cancer and her mom was burned out. After her father died, I came over to live with her, her mom and her best friend, to see if we would work out in person as wel as we did over the internet. She set up a table with a computer in the corner of her room. But while I knew Katherin very well, I didn't really know her mom and her best friend and living in a "stranger"'s house, that spot was the only place that sorta felt like mine.

We now have our own house and I got my own office and even a nice big table that the previous owners left behind, but then life happened... The basement flooded. It wasn't being used yet, but it does take up a lot of time to gut it all to get rid of mold (and fix the many many construction errors), but then we descided to keep going and do some stuff on the main floor... so now my office space is becoming a new bathroom, and untill the basement is finished enough to move our bedroom down there, I don't have my own room anymore and my desk is now in the kitchen, my big table is folded up and stored in the garage and a lot of my stuff has been stored in boxes and bags...

I miss my room soooo much, I had it painted a pale bright green, which gave such a beautiful nature feel with my wood desk and table wub.gif My one lucky thing is that my mother-in-law gave me a really nice computerdesk for christmas a couple years back and I managed to use it as computer desk, drawspace and trinket-storage all at once ...

I added a picture of my setup, I don't know if it'll help anyone, but it shows my desk and lists what normally goes everywhere as I had to empty my desk to move it out of my room... just a side note: the little cabinet under (5) is empty, so that's extra storage too laugh.gif
