i just want to know what everybody thinks i have a blast drawing cartoons but i feel that i cant call myself an artist if i dont try drawing more realistic things thoughts anybody?
Spuddy
Not everybody is going to agree with me on this, but I think an artist is just someone who regularly draws. Cartooning is drawing, and so yes, you'll still be an artist. Whatever you feel like drawing, draw.
Lance500
I agree with spuddy. Obviously you can draw or this cartoon character wouldn’t be here. Don’t try and put yourself in a labelled box, have a go at everything and enjoy creating.
Mr Ofir
Spuddy and Lance are right. Keep focused on the "i have a blast" part, and then the "i cant call myself an artist" won't matter.

For the longest time and still now, I have a hard time calling myself an artist. Not because I have not tied other styles or mediums, but becuase of childhood programming by parents blush.gif
What I am finding, is there are not that many people that can draw or paint, and they consider anyone who can, an artist! If you like what you are doing, don't stop, if you feel you must try something different or want to expand your ability, start slow and intermix your projects. Do something you really like and then one that is more of a challenge. DON'T DO THEM AT THE SAME TIME! You will never get around to doing the harder one! Oh and ALWAYS tell yourself it is JUST PRACTICE and the out come does not matter, when doing something new. If it works out,you will be happy, if not, it was just parctice!

well I looked up the word Artist and this is what it says .. I tend to agree with it .

one skilled or versed in learned arts ...now I looked up all words to be correct and skilled means : Having acquired a mastery of something ...mastery meaning :possession or display of great skill or technique b: skill or knowledge that makes one master of a subject :

now I realize that this is at times a touchy subject but my thoughts are not everyone is a artist ...just because you really like to draw or even draw all the time but you can be a artist and draw only cartoons or trees or people there are all kinds of artist ...I think if you love to draw then dont get hung up on all the other stuff ...just enjoy yourself .

wether or not you stick with the one medium,it's up to you.i agree with everyone else.i only do one medium.and that's portraits.even though i have a large supply of paint and paint brushes.i just have trouble mixin paint and blending and all that stuff.it takes alot of practice, just like drawing.it's nothing wrong with experimenting with other types.if you decide to,you'll have to get your hands dirty.and cartoons is a form of art.people think that just because i'm an artist,i should draw stuff for activities.and that means that it will be toony and out of my head.i can do cartoons,i just can't do them out of my head.i find it difficult to draw a perfect circle.but if i was told to shade one,it would be a realistic ball.so i don't do too much cartooning.but it's still as much as an art as anything else.

You are an artist. Drawing cartoons is an art and from what I see you are good at it! Keep it up!

It really depends on who you are describing yourself to...if you are looking for work, you might say I'm a cartoonist. I'm not certain but I think that other people usually decide whether your an artist, unless you are advertising your work. No one has called me an artist yet... unsure.gif sad.gif mad.gif

Drawman, you apparently are a man, and a person who draws. I will call you an artist tongue.gif
Spuddy
Drawman, for the kindly act of drawing well, I now dub thee an artist. laugh.gif

Feint & Spuddy,

You are too kind...thanks blush.gif Now that I'm an artist I guess I'll have to create something unsure.gif

Jong Tong,

Coming from an artist (recently authorized), I'd say your an artist, didn't mean to highjack your thread.
