This was made for a contest about being a student while communism in Romania.

What i wanted to say through this drawing is that even thought back then communists wanted our people to believe that our country is rich and prosper, but in spite of this image there was no freedom of speech.

There's more to say and explain, but i'm not so good at speaking English blush.gif so I'll let the drawing talk for me.

Any constructive critique is highly appreciated happy.gif

PS: This is only the drawing with a frame and the title added in Corel PHOTO-PAINT, but I also want to write some lyrics from the national anthem we had in that period and lyrics that the pupils had to sing, but in Romanian.

PPS: i used for this: colored pencils, graphite, charcoal, oil pastels, colored chalk and a little imagination smile.gif

Kim,
What, exactly, is meant by, "draw outside your lines" ?

It's not hard for me to understand your drawing because Lithuania was communist-led too. I'm glad I was born in 1992 when all worst things were over...

Hellen, your drawing is interesting and obviously symbolic for you. The gag is the classic symbol of lack of freedom and the wheat the prosperity of the land.

The first thing I think when I see this is that it is unfinished. You have elements of this in detail, such as the wheat ears in the foreground and the photo and ribbon, but the background of the field and sky lack value and interest.

You don't need to add a great deal of detail to make this better, but to even out the values in the background and add some different colours to it would help. Skys and fields of wheat are not pure colours and would never be monotone like this. You can provide some detail to the foreground, adding more detail of wheat then let it blur as the eye goes further back.

WIth the sky, there should be a gradual lightening of colour as it reaches the horizon. Aim for smooth coverage and go slow and you'll do fine.

Symbolic drawings are always interesting as the viewer pulls what information they want from them. Great stuff.

And let us know how the contest went.

I'm glad 2 happy.gif I was born in '91 .. Unfortunately all the countries that have been communist-led, including ours, had to endure lots of political and economic problems because of that sad.gif

I don't think that you followed the link to that page with the national anthem .. It is named "Three colors" representing our flag... anyway, Romanian people would make the connection between the colors in the drawing and the ones in our flag. Red represents the blood of the Romanian martyrs that fought four our country, yellow is for the wheat fields and blue for the sky.

[At the beginning I didn't think about that ribbon so the flag was created by the background, the sky and that thing that is put over the girl's mouth.]

So, I cannot put other colors, maybe only different shades of blue and yellow could fit there smile.gif
