Ola Everyone,

Welcome to the weekly drawing challenge - this is the first one that I am hosting so I hope that I do ok and that you all enjoy the reference photos, I will try and help where I can - But most of all... JUST HAVE FUN smile.gif

Here are the 'game rules'... so everyone play nice smile.gif

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Here are the 5 reference photo's that I have selected for this week:
1. A hybiscus from my mothers garden
2. The cutest little piglets who had just been bought at the auction
3. An old car that has clearly been turned into a pot plant
4. My sister Lilliana - the little actress of the family smile.gif
5. Shells on the Port Elizabeth Beach
Milliye
I love the pictures, most of all the flower and the car. What a shame I won't have time to participate. sad.gif

that has clearly been turned into a pot plant.

I had to take a closer look at that. I think you mean "potted" plant. laugh.gif Not that I'd recognize a pot plant if I saw one... my husband might...

I atempted the actress.I know it's not the right angle again but hey, this is a 15minuts sketch.
TaniaBee
Hey Roxy,
Glad you could pop in - can't wait to see what you come up with.

Elena, your drawing is great.... I'm going to show the little actress, she'll be so impressed smile.gif
ElenaM
I'm embarrased. my sketch is so quick and clumsy, tell your sis that i am a beginner after all, Tania. And thank you.
TaniaBee
And what a great beginner you are smile.gif
Well it's a great 'quick sketch' - I really don't do drawing people very well, but yours looks excellent!!

As for a quick sketch this is wonderful. You got the facial features right and that's really hard when doing it at this angle and only in a few minutes. Don't be shy, your work is fantastic!
ElenaM
Thank you, guys. I put so much enthusiasm in my work, maybe that's it.I tried most of the dry media: sepia, sanguine, conte, chalk, charcoal, pastels, crayons, colored pencils maybe this approach and love of doing art helps me where my experience is limited. What i love most in challenges is the fact that you have a selection of great photos and you can try quick sketches just like in a live studio. I love that.
And thanks for the references this week Tania.

Hi Tania,
For some reason I didn't get notified of this challenge. I went looking for it and finally found it. Your photos are great and should provide a challenge for all of us. I will get to work on.....hmmmm which one to pick? They are all great so I had better get to work. Thanks for hosting this week.
TaniaBee
Elena, your enthusiasm reflects on your beautiful artwork!! i'm glad you liked the pics smile.gif

Trish, so glad you found it - i was asked by Paulette to put the challenge under the new category of challenges - maybe i should tell Paulette to notify everyone in the general topic forum. Anyway, can't wait to see what you come up with.
Sveta17
Thank you for the lovely pictures. I hope to have more time and interpret more of them. The piglets are so cute.

Sveta, as usual, your drawing looks fabulous - I love your style smile.gif

Bacon.... YUMMY!! but if you see those cute little critters you don't want any harm to come to them... shame...
TaniaBee
Elena, Your piglets are gorgeous, and those eye lashes....
in the photo it doesn't come up so well, but in real life, piglets have such prominent eyelashes.

The hibiscus is also beautiful - i love you use of color!!

Garyfallia, your drawings always amaze me, and that you do them in marker is amazing.

Interesting is good, and challenging is what it's all about!!! Thanks for your drawings guys!!
oliverandjazz
i love that pen and watercolor style sveta, so simple yet so awesome!

A variation of the car.

I gave the hibiscus a shot while I was waiting for my kids to get off the school bus, I would call it a scribble. I have been finding that more and more my mind is wandering away to what I think it should look like rather than what it really looks like. I'm hoping that as you get better at drawing that your mind just naturally draws what it sees. huh.gif

Hi Chris,
I think you did a wonderful job on this.
TaniaBee
Sveta - you car variation is superb - i like the little birdie on top of the car - cute touch smile.gif

Chris - your hibiscus is stunning - i really love it, like Sveta said, the dark background gives it a nice finish.
TaniaBee
Here is my humble attempt at the car - it's in watercolor, but not quite finished yet.

Paulette, I love that you sketched several of the subjects in one sketch. As for apologies...I don't think they are necessary, you did a splendid job, there is a real likeness there and that is the hardest part to achieve in portraits
*Roxy*
I'm done my hibiscus but I'm really tired so i'll post it up tomorrow. Maybe morning if I have time before work.
NVA
Just to say Hello to everybody! How are you all?

TaniaBee
Paulette, it's great - Lilly is going to love it I'm sure!!

Roxy, can't wait to see your Hibiscus.

NVA, your hibiscus looks fantastic!! We are all fine (well i think, i speak for myself anyway) - glad you could join in the challenge smile.gif

It was a pleasure hosting this challenge, it was my first and i hope i did ok.
*Roxy*
Well here it is as promised. My hibiscus. I finished it yesterday while I was waiting for my boyfriend at the orthodontist. I just printed the hibiscus and brought it along with me with my sketchbook. My boyfriend also helped me draw this too. I just have to keep practicing to get better.
