Overture curtain lights, this is it the night of nights, no rehearsing rehearsing no more, we know all the parts by heart.......on with the show this is it.

Hi all,

and welcome to Snoopy 101 Looney Tunes challenge my name is Brian David your host. That song continues to bring me child hood memories as I remember hearing it almost every morning before school. Although I am no expert on this....

The very first Looney Tunes cartoon was released in April of 1930. Seems many of the early cartoons were quite musical as was no exception for this 8 minute animated Cartoon called " Sinking in the bath tub". Two of Disney's ex animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising partnered with producer Leon Schlesinger to create this early cartoon distributed by no other then Warner Brothers. The pilot of this cartoon impressed Schlesinger and he convinced Warner Brothers to produce a series of Cartoons now known as Looney Tunes and was preceded by the popular Merrie Melodies series. Many popular characters were born along the way such as Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam, Kyote, Sylvester, Tweety , Roadrunner and many many more.

My Challenge

Simply try to draw one of the references I have provided below. And for those who would like to test their creative side try to create your very own Looney Tunes character. Please no computer graphics, you may use your computer for coloring or text if you wish but please post your original drawing first.

I hope you all enjoy this challenge, and please feel free to comment on each others creations.

Happy drawings,

Brian.
Kaly
hi
these are very cute, I will sure draw one or more.... tongue.gif rolleyes.gif wub.gif
amesie
Great images! I had a fun time drawing Yosemite! I colored him with some pastel pencils I had and I think regular colored pencils would have been better, but I had never used the pastel ones before and was curious. smile.gif I may have to try another one of the images!

I had trouble uploading my picture before....let's see if it worked this time! Apparently, the photo size was too big! Well, here is Sam! smile.gif

I liked Brian's story about the first Looney Tunes cartoon so I did a little Googling about it. Apparently the star of this first cartoon was a character named "Bosko", created by two ex-Disney animators. Look familar? These are my pencil drawings of Bosko based on some images I found on the Web.

[attachmentid=9910]DAB NABBIT!...this one got my husband and i remembering the oldie but goody cartoons..this guy wasnt one of my favorites, but it was very popular with my husband..he tells me that only one of his guns even comes close to looking like the old revolver and one looks like a street gun..lol.."honey, yosemite didnt carry a Nine"..lol..anyhoot it was fun to do...perhaps i should do another later in color..

Brian David Dekter
Hi Kaly wub.gif Great to see you.... I always look forward to your drawings.

Hi amesie Welcome to the challenge and glad to see you join in ....sorry you had trouble uploading... a small picture file is recommended and also makes it easier to view. Fantastic drawing you did...I find it not easy to use pastel in Cartoons but I think you did a great job. I still like to use graphite for Cartoon drawings and also black ink and Prisma markers for color. I look forward to more of your drawings.

Thanks Ernest.....I find the history very interesting ... he was originally created by Hugh Harman in 1927 and at the time of the so to speak "talkie craze" ....thanks so much for doing this I absolutely love these drawings you did.

smile.gif Hi oliverandjazz wow great drawing of Yosemite! I bet your husband loved it and great to see you join in....what a classic character and that rough deep voice I always remember him for....

you all may find this interesting... speaking of voices many belonged to the late great Mel Blanc. Here is a link to him on the David Letterman show.

Kaly
Hey Brian, you sure do your homework, thanks you for sharing this with us wub.gif Some people don't even imagine how much work and people are behind a cartoon show. And back then it should be really dificult!!and yet they maneged to make the best cartoons ever didn't they?!
Mr Ofir
Hi everyone! Nice couple of Sams there, at least for now he's beating Bugs 2-0 laugh.gif I like the new guns Kay, maybe those won't explode on his face laugh.gif
Cool Bosco Ernest, I also did some googlin on the first appearrances of two of my favorite Looney Tunes, Porky and my paisano Speedy Gonzales. I like how they looked different back then"

[attachmentid=9945]

[attachmentid=9946]

Thanks for the challenge and the Mel Blanc link Brian, here are the links for the mentioned first appearances:
Porky in "I haven't got a hat" and Speedy in "Cat-tails for two"

And you're right Kaly those cartoons were great, and to prove it one of my favorites "Duck Amuck"
danielgutiny
tongue.gif what a great challenge ! (thanks for the image of dora ) I have a version of silvester and twetty but witout silvester , issnoopy and twetty , enjoy it

Brian David Dekter
Thanks Danielgutiny I am glad you like the challenges....what a fantastic combination Snoopy & Tweety are....this is so adorable..I always look forward to your drawings smile.gif

Thanks Kaly! wub.gif I really try to make the challenges fun and interesting.....were the cartoons not great back then and so musical. And I love the detail that went into the background scenery, props and characters... and I believe all hand drawn too.

Hi Mr Ofir thanks for your kind words....wow those characters sure change over the years your drawings are fantastic. I enjoyed watching the links you provided.....those are amazing toons...thanks!

The following link I warn you could be considered X-rated as far as language goes so I apologize in advance if this offends any one.... but this is too funny I had to share it.....Hope you like this one Ernest

It's funny how cartoon animation has evolved from something intended (obviously, here!) for adult audiences, to something intended solely for children, back to something often targeted at adults.
Brian David Dekter
Hmmm interesting........I am not convinced Bosko is actually trying to swear or is intended to swear in this one Ernest...he may be trying to say folk as in that dirty folk....I wondered if this was a blooper...on the other hand you may be right...seems many cartoons were intended for adult audiences back then.

If you take a look at many of the Bosko cartoons on You Tube I think he really is funny... and I would think this sort of thing not to be intended as part of his character.
Cyn
Maybe he meant "you dirty Fawk". Guy Fawkes was a mercenary, English conspirator who was executed for his role in a plot to blow up James I and the Houses of Parliament in the late 1500's. Anyway they used to call people that derogatory name.. It was for criminal, felon, outlaw, machinator, plotter etc.. He was also in on a plot of 36 barrels of gunpowder in 1605.. There is even a Guy Fawkes Day somewhere..
But don't mind me, I never was much in History and I tend to stick up for Bosko.. laugh.gif

By the way.. Great Looney Toons drawings from everyone..
Kaly
hi all,
Lovely drawings wub.gif you guys have been busy.....

Brian David Dekter
Leave it to my pal Cyn to drop in with this info smile.gif.....thanks Cyn kid this sure is interesting and that makes perfect sence to me....I thought the word may have been folk because Porky Pig used it so often in his expression....."bleep bleep that's all folks" and Bosko being a Looney tunes character I thought maybe that was it.

Hi Kaly smile.gif your cartoons really are great .......glad you had fun with this one...what a very sweet drawing you did and I love how you colored it.
Cyn
Thanks, Bri-guy. Yeah I have so much college "edumakation" laugh.gif that I can even tell you where the f and s words came from, since they were not originally curse words. They were abbreviations. But leave it to the public to make everything naughty. Ha Ha
Lance500
Its here in the UK that we celebrate Guy Fawkes night which falls on the 5 November. All over the country bonfires are built and an effigy of Mr Fawkes is placed on top and we all stand around to watch him burn. Such friendly people us British blink.gif
Brian David Dekter
laugh.gif Cyn if you went to college you have a better edumakation then me laugh.gif ...."abbreviations" .. I would have never known.

Okay Lance now my history is coming back to me even with my lack of edumakation as Cyn says...."The Guy Fawkes River" in Australia named after him....and the term...."Bonfire night" in the UK rings a bell.
Mr Ofir
Cartoon challenges are always fun, but this has some unexpected sources of fun: 30's cartoons cursing, Guy Fawkes ("Remember, remember the fith of November"), edumakation, effigy burning (we latin americans are friendly too, Lance laugh.gif we also do that, her is calledThe Judas burnt" although it doesn't has to be Judas it can be anyone "popular" enough lol)
Here's another Looney Tune cursing, I apologize in advance for posting this, as, unlike with Bosko's case there is no room for interpretation here, but this is really funny:

Porky Pig cursing

I agree with Brian laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Hi all,

I really have been enjoying this challenge and all the fantastic drawings....and hey! a little controversy makes it interesting too.

With out a doubt Ernest is one of my favorite artists around this place.... he is a big inspiration to me and I am sure many others.... I remember he once said he likes to be called "Doc" so I decided to do this drawing....sure was challenging to draw.....took me one full hour to sketch 15 minutes to color and 3 erasers.

Happy drawings, Brian.
Lance500
Good wabbit Brian. Nicely coloured too smile.gif

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif I don't know how you do it Lance I am laughing out loud...your cartoons are amazing!

and thanks for your kind words I decided to try another version.
Lance500
Thanks Brian. This one you have done reminds me of the old collectors cards - real nice touch smile.gif
Brian David Dekter
Thanks Lance, I have been experimenting again with photo-shop.smile.gif
racedolls
wow brian love that bugs!! im am actually reading some books and practicing some cartooning. i want to do something fun, its alot harder than it looks!! so i have been practicing like crazy and i am getting a couple of books off ebay that has great reviews.

[attachmentid=10072][attachmentid=10073]

Brian David Dekter
Thanks Lori, great to see you!! Cartoons really are fun...and creative...I agree not as easy as it looks..I found learning the basics of drawing...and a passion to practise has greatly improved my Cartooning skills. I think most find the hands and face the hardest to draw....I find now I can draw them a little quicker with fewer mistakes and less erasers...smile.gif I hope you will post your progress...I bet you will do great!...I look forward to your drawings.

Thanks Kaly you put a big smile on my face when I saw this....I absolutely love this one!! wub.gif not only do I love your drawing but the concept of putting Sylvester in the cage really made me laugh. What have I done... I think I have turned you into a Cartoonist.. laugh.gif Actually you deserve all the credit for all your hard work and effort that goes into these drawings. smile.gif I am so proud of you.
Ernest Friedman-Hill
Thanks, Brian! I love it! I'll have to print that out and hang it up here.

I love to check in on your cartoon challenge threads. Cartooning is super hard for me because I have a very shaky line; good cartooninsts use a nice smooth solid line. It's something I'd love to develop but haven't done so yet. Something else I haven't done but would like to learn is photoshop coloring, unless you count these, done from GIMP tutorials:

[attachmentid=10082][attachmentid=10081][attachmentid=10080]

I agree Clara -- what a great idea and wonderful execution! That is a rockin' cartoon.

And Mr. Ofir, your drawings would fit right in on the pages of the New Yorker -- you have a nice style that transitions directly from realism to cartoon and back.

Anyway, you guys are great. Keep up the good work.
Kaly
thank you Brian and Ernest,
But the idea of caging silvestre wasn't mine, blush.gif I found an image on the net and "stole" the idea sad.gif but all the rest (not much.......tweety thinking and all the rain on Silvestre) is my idea tongue.gif
wub.gif

Ernest its quite easy to color in paint shop pro so I guess it must be more or less the same in photoshop. Give it a try. If I can help in any way just let me know.
Brian David Dekter
Thanks Ernest I am glad you have an interest in the challenges. I really believe you have the ability to do anything you want in the art world...I think your tutorials with GIMP are outstanding.

Kaly sorry for not realizing this....and I would not say stole since no money is involved smile.gif ...but rather using a reference. Also I agree with Ernest many great Cartoonists develop smooth solid lines and I think you sure have demonstrated that in your cartoons... I still love this one. smile.gif

I think we should all not forget about Danielgutiny I believe she is only 13 years old and I am so thrilled she takes part in these challenges...... you should all check out her gallery...I particularly like her parody of Mickey & Minnie and some her other creations such as doggy roggy...I am so proud of her.

Also I think Lance is a real pro....with out a doubt one of my favorite Cartoonists around Drawspace. I have not seen Kim around much lately but she is also one of my favorites... and Venus....She and Kim inspired me to start the challenges in the first place....and where is my pal Cyn I love her cartoons also....and the list goes on....

Happy drawings, Brian.
Kaly
Thanks Brian
I agree with you! all those names you mencioned are very creative artists. I love their work TOO!!

Hi Brian,
thank you,
I was just joking when I said I'd start a movie biggrin.gif biggrin.gif that would take for ever wacko.gif !!I can do some animations but not much. I use paintshop pro, but I'm still learning to do these animations, but they are fun to do!! Even if I don't know much I'll be glad to help you in what I can and if you need. wink.gif
This one was very simple to doo, but when you want to make the cartoons move, that is another story...

Brian David Dekter
Thanks Clara if you ever wonder why my avatar is a drawing I did of Kyote saying Help! is because I always need it laugh.gif I have Photo shop elements 5 and have not experimented yet with animations ... I just have not had time lately....thanks for offering help.. I may take you up on that one day. smile.gif I really loved your last drawing and you have inspired me to do one with Sylvester & Tweety but now need more time to put it on paper...I hope to try later in the week. smile.gif

Best wishes , Brian.
Kaly
Yep I guess we all do need help now an then...sometimes always!!
I'm so glad that I inspired you smile.gif looking forward to see your drawing.
Anout animations, there is this wonderfull site that teaches how to do these animations, the only problem is that it all in Portuguese, this lovely Brazilian girl made it, and you can even download paint shop pro from it.I wish it was in English as well, I mean for you guys, I'm Ok with Portugueese biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
You can allways take a look at it anyway, just open the links, some of them have pictures that show you how to do things.
http://www.cristinyonline.com.br/

I used to have photoshop, but when I downloaded paintshop pro from this site photoshop disapeared from my computer ohmy.gif I though it was upgraded to paintshop pro. I don't know what diferences there are from one to the other.
Anyway I tried a new animation with my tweety drawing, took me about an hour to do this one. Hope you like it rolleyes.gif

Great start on gif's. When I started animations with Photoshop, I started with my tribal indian name and a bunch of signatures for my emails. It was a lot of fun but time consuming.. biggrin.gif I have just run out of time for anything any more. sad.gif

Nothing to do with Looney toons but here are a couple; (okay 1 Looney Toon) :-)
Brian David Dekter
Hi Laurie great to see you it's been too long! smile.gif you sure have not lost your touch that is fabulous! I look forward to more drawings.
