I would like to ask all or any of you how you run and save your scans. What DPI do you scan at - 75?, 300? and do you save and upload it as .bmp or .jpg? I ask these things to help me get a better quality reproduction. Some of you get a very fine grained image and some(like me) get a grainier poor image. I save as .bmp/300dpi(a very large lossless file) and then pull up in Irfanview to resize and/or crop as needed. Then I save at 75 dpi /jpg (condensed to about 65 kb) for web pages. I looked into this before, but still not resolved satisfactorily, so need a little more technical info.

Thanks,
John

Bitmap will always be a less precise scan. .jpeg is the best for web, although I don't know what kind of scanner you are using. I have an Epson and I usually scan into Photoshop (I also work from a Mac).

When it comes up on my scanner screen, I scan at .jpeg 72 dpi. There really isn't any point in scanning greater than 72 because that is all it will be on the web anyway. Then I also usually reduce it in size in Photoshop then Save under "Save for Web" and I save it again as a jpeg.

Again, I don't know if any of this will help you as I don't know what you are using but I do know about the .bmp verses .jpeg.

I scanned some information about formats that I learned when taking Creative Suite 2. I thought it was fairly good. I'll have to find the rest of it about dpi but thought I would go ahead and post this. Hope you find it informative.

I scan my drawing in the .tiff format at 200 dpi. Then i change the format to .jpg and the dpi to 76 in Paint Shop Pro before I post it. I scan at 200 dpi because sometimes i like to print a drawing on photo paper.

I post at about 125kb, which is usually about a 90% JPEG quality factor. Maybe you're using too low a Q value?

I have no idea what you are all talking about huh.gif ???

This is obviously more complicated than I thought blush.gif

I scan at 200 - then save it to whatever file I want it in - go into that file and resize so it is quick to upload on dial-up (my 1st computer came with Nero photosnap so that's what comes up when I want to edit).................... obviously I have a smart computer and it never bothers the "Luddite" owner tongue.gif biggrin.gif with all these details......suits me just fine because I wouldn't know what to do if it did wacko.gif

So my take on this this is its all luck on my part wink.gif
