Learning to draw is all about learning to see as an artist. In this project, you transform an egg-shape into a cartoon of a goofy-looking gremlin. You exercise your vision to examine the step-by-step illustrations that demonstrate the various stages of adding the very simple shading.

I had just completed illustration 07-03, my wife was looking it over and she commented that if you turned it over, it looked like the start of a puppy dog and I agree. She is (I think) an excellent painter, so I guess there is more to seeing than meets the eye (pun intended)! These lessons are deceptively simple, but very instructive. Great stuff!

@ melissme : with what sort of pencil do you draw?
I draw with a HB but I think it is to hard. Or not?

This is my egg head man here. Took me about an hour because I had to sit some distance away from this computer and keep getting up to go to the next page. I had my 5 year old niece here drawing along with me but now she is here bawling saying hers looks ugly. It's good for a 5 year old though. So, tell me what you think of my drawing.

Yours looks great! You caught the shading arch in the face better than I did, I think my brain shut down about that time...LOL Good job!

This lesson was so much fun! After doing some of the challenges it was nice to let loose and do something 'fun anf fancy free'. I will post mine in my gallery later, since I have to go to a completely different computer to scan it, then put it on disk then download it on my computer etc. So I think I will just start doing a download once a day!
I struggled with the curved shading on the side fo the face and still do not have it quite right but I am going to start working on shading lines once a day like the lesson suggests so I am looking forward to seeing how that improves.

This is soo cool. There are forums for each aspect of the online lessons. Nice. Here is my head that I sketched a few hours ago. I look forward to uploading many more images. I'm hooked. This will also help me to keep at it when I get a little lazy. Very nice.

And another fun lesson to do. My gremlin came out rather well. Although my eraser had a lot more work to do than my pencil. Especially with the egg shape of the head.

Actually I should have gone to bed ... but seeing this lesson I convinced myself that another 30 minutes or so of drawing can't hurt

Enjoyed the lesson and I am sure my two kids will love the Gremlin when they see him tomorrow.

Great lesson. I see how it is starting to come together regarding shading, shapes, proportion, etc...
I'll be getting a scanner/printer this week so I'll be able to start uploading the challenges. Love it. Thanks!

This lesson is pretty cool!
One of the aspects that I enjoyed was drawing the smile of the gremlin. I had to correct my first try because it looked a little bit sad, but then the next was happier!
Thanks
