Hello to everyone!
Now I have to go and sharpen my pencils! wink.gif
As you know, I am a totally beginner in drawing.
But with this forum I will learn!
Thanks!

Hi all

as uploaded my pictures (some not successfully - need to enlarge some yet!) thought I'd now join the forum

I live in Lancashire in the UK and have been dabbling in art for about 6 years - trial and error in various mediums

I've just finished the second term of my first ever art class - watercolours for beginners. If nothing else it makes me do something as I'd not painted for about a year when I first started the course

Please feel free to give feedback on my pictures!

Hi everyone!

My name is Yolanda and I have just moved to Paris, France from Montreal, Canada...
Leaving the world of 3D design to take the time to practice art (drawing, painting) full time.

This site is amazing.

Happy art-a-ti-zing!

:blink:Hello everyone! New to the site but been checking it out since I registered yesterday. As a 42 year old kid who still likes to find that quiet time to become absorbed in drawing, (when wife, kids, job life etc. allows, which never seems as often as it should) I am impressed with what I have seen on here so far and look forward to participating in the community. Still learning my way around here but many thanks to all who make this site possible. I also have children that have shown interest and ability in art and hope to get them involved here and further spark their creativity.

Hello All,

I'm an absolute beginner here... Just been doodling since childhood. I've finally decided to take sketching a little seriously. Always been my dream to sketch like a professional. Hoping I would be able to matrialize this dream into something more concrete. Happy to be here and looking forward to a lots of interaction smile.gif
Kerolajn
Hello, I`m Caroline from Croatia. (:
I`m 15 years old and I really enjoy drawing. happy.gif
I read lessons and they are fantastic. Congratulation.
I`m counting down to the end of the school year so I have more time for art.
My drawings are bad but I do my best and I hope that someday they will be better.
In my free time I play guitar, listen the music (rock, metal, country, jazz), read books (crime), act, try to survive in high school and of course draw. I love football and formula 1. (:

btw. warning: my english is very very bad sad.gif

Hello everyone at Drawspace.

I have quite an introduction, so please bear with me. I have always, always wanted to draw. It has literally been my albatross in life. I have jumped out of perfectly good airplanes, participated in all this crazy stuff...but I never learned to draw well. I remember taking an art class in high school, and at the end of the year my art teacher told me, "John, some people were just never meant to draw. This may not be your talent, but don't stop looking for what it may be." Those words stung me so bad, for years I never even attempted to pick up a pencil to draw. Instead, I was told that I should seek medical help because I have a "problem visualizing the subject".

Fast-forward ten years. I'm married, had two children, divorced, remarried, and expecting a third daughter. I have officially settled down and for the first time since that art class, picked up a pencil and sketched not one, not two, but three separate sketches on an old pad that I've had since 2003 but never even used a page out of. Granted, these aren't super or anything. Heck, one's nothing more than about twenty lines, not including shading. But that's all it took to get the ball rolling. After browsing around on the Internet for a half-hour I found Drawspace and let me tell you, within the first set of lessons I realized this is an absolute gold-mine! I'm beyond excited to begin the lessons and chronicle my progress in that old sketchbook.

Thanks for listening, and thanks for renewing an interest that I (and others) thought I should abandon.

Hey, my names Drew, and I'm 15. I've always wanted to draw, but never really got good at all, when both of my best friends are pretty much pro. So glad to be here, thanks

Welcome to drawspace! It's wonderful to hear you've taken up drawing, despite what your teacher said. Personally, I believe anyone can learn; you just have to want to... and this is the place to be. As you've already seen, the lessons are easy & fun, as good or better than any book out there. I'm having a blast, almost done with the beginners section! Hope to see your works posted soon, good luck! --Melinda
Brenda Hoddinott
To JBagley (and others),

Thank you so very much for your kind words. Drawspace is a labour of love. I've always wanted to be able to give others with a dream of learning to draw, a practical fun way of teaching yourself.

Your comment reminded me of a section in the introduction of my new book (to be published as a downloadable e-book on Drawspace later this year or early next year):

Becoming your own drawing teacher!

I firmly believe that regardless of age, lifestyle, or ability, all individuals with some degree of vision and a way to hold a drawing tool can teach themselves to draw. After all, I speak from experience; I taught myself to draw from books and so can you!

As small children, we enjoyed making drawings; a perfectly natural aspect of human development. Sadly though, at some point between childhood and adulthood, societal fallacies and misconceptions cause many potential artists to abandon drawing. Quite often, something as seemingly benign as a single negative comment from a parent, friend, or teacher, has the power to push a gentle artistic spirit away from the joys of drawing.

Thankfully, it’s never too late to learn how to draw! The key to successful self-education is to enjoy the process of learning; hence, this book provides practical guidance within a light-hearted text, supplemented by numerous illustrations. My goal, as an art educator, is to provide you with the necessary tools to make my guidelines your own. My approach is result oriented and lessons and projects are designed to instil strong skills in drawing diverse types of lines.
Pooklet
Hello everyone.

I am also new to this forum and like so many others I've always wanted to learn how to draw. A few years back I had a health scare and decided to make a list of all the things I had to achieve before I died. One of the things was to learn to draw.

I "accidentally" discovered this site and withing a few minutes I had my (lined) notepads out and started drawing shapes. I'm now on my 6th sketch and decided to carry on with the lessons before I get too carried away.

I've gone from drawing suspicious looking stick men to not only recognizable objects but not too bad looking at all drawings (even If I have to say so myself). Within 4 short days I've had at least 6 people who asked for this web address and many more saying that they can't wait to give it a go.

Thank you so much for the wonderful lessons. Brenda - you have a wonderful gift but what makes it even more extraordinary is that you are willing to share it with the world. I know far too many people who guard their knowledge passionately but because you give so much (and may I add so patiently) many more can learn to enjoy sketching.

My 5 year old son's teacher called me in on Monday to tell me that they have noted a marked improvement in his drawing and coloring skills recently. Since I've taken up drawing I spend a lot more time with the kids (they draw while I draw). I am finding the experience very rewarding. Before they only cared for their cartoons but now I can't draw without them drawing too.

hello everyone!
I am new to this site and am very excited to have found it. I am a ceramic sculpture artist and teach at risk kids many different kinds of art techniques and use a variety of mediums which has left little time for my own creations. I have been having a "bug" to start drawing again and am a bit rusty so I am looking for inspiration and new beginnings. I think this will be fun! des
Artache
Hi Everyone, my heart aches for art, though I'm actually a costume jewelry maker and a wannabe archeologist. laugh.gif I found this site a few weeks ago and just upgraded my membership so I could do the lessons. I'm starting from scratch (drawing circles, squares and ovals), but I'm sure once I get over those hurdles I'll become much better. I do have one question though, if someone else asks a question on any of the forums, do the others get to view the replies? huh.gif I noticed there were some questions in the "Making and Using a Viewfinder" posts, that I would like to see the answers too, as I have the same questions. If anyone knows, please kindly inform me. Thanks! J. [/size]

Hi susan, I can assure you that it will absolutely help your writing. Drawing can reawaken the creative side of your brain which does help you to think and see differently, more balanced and opens up the horizon which extends into every aspect of your life! Good luck and enjoy! It doesn't have to be perfect to achieve the benefits, just go with it and see what happens!

There are so many newcomers arriving lately that I find it difficult to keep up with the introductions so I will add a couple of lines here which will be my welcome on behalf of Drawspace to anyone who wanders this way.

I have been involved with Drawspace for a few months, initially as a lurker, more recently as participant and moderator. You can't ask for a better group of receptive, interesting, talented, kind, knowledgable and willing people who will always respond to your questions whether about art or about art-related topics. Just ask.

Spend time navigating your way through the discussion threads and have a look in the gallery for members to see the various styles and levels of expertise there. The Inspirational gallery may have just the reference image for you to practice your technique. Or try one of the Drawing Challenges. There's no test, no stress. Just pure enjoyment.

And the lessons. Brenda's lessons are the backbone of this site and the inspiration for so many who come here to learn the basics on the road to artistic freedom. Work your way through them, store them, print them, use them. Practice is the key.

So grab a cup of coffee or tea, browse your way through the threads, enjoy yourself and when you're ready, post a few lines to introduce yourself, ask a question or share your work with others.

Welcome. smile.gif

Hi everybody!
I found a link to Drawspace today in a computer tech forum that I belong to and I followed the link here and checked out Drawspace and decided to join. This is just what I had been hoping to find. I took a class in Art back in the mid 60s. The prof threw all of us a curve. He started us off by copying pictures. The picture was to be pasted in our sketchbook on the upper left hand side of the sheet. Then the next day in class, we'd copy the picture on the lower right side of the same sheet. About the middle of the quarter, he told all of us that we couldn't draw that way anymore, we were supposed to pick out an object at our homes and draw that for our homework. That was what I called drawing in 3-D. It's actually drawing from life. I chose a beautiful vase that Mama had and I drew it and I thought that I did pretty well considering I didn't know anything about prespective, curved lines, or anything else. I know that the vase was too small, but it resembled a vase. The next day when I showed my vase to the prof (we were supposed to show him what we had drawn) I still hear the prof saying "What is that??" Anyway after that I lost my confidence and I failed the Art course, but ever since then I have wanted to learn to draw, sketch, and paint.

I am from Georgia (USA). I am 61 years old (yesterday was my birthday) and I still think that I can learn to draw.

Hello all, Have been so busy since I signed up I hadn't even had a chance to say hey!!

My name is Veralyn, I reside in the wonderful Pacific NorthWest where it appears fall has fallen...

I have been drawing in one form or another all my life, - Crayons are still my favorite but have gone the way of being collectables now, instead of regular art mediums, don't get me wrong I still have a trusty set sitting at my desk for phone time doodling!

It is wonderful to find a drawing dedicated site, though I see it is expanding and watercolors are a pretty interesting forum in progress, Yes I confess, I was there most of this morning..... Haven't got chores done at all..... heck they will wait! I"M LEARNING.. <grin> yes my art is now taking front seat on my wild ride thru life and I'm loving it.

I work mostly in graphite as it is the most portable of my mediums, I am a Newbie football mom and abhor the sport, sooo, pencil and pad go with me so I can at least indulge in my prefered activities while I wait. I also work in pastels (dry and oil), charcoal, pen and Ink, acrylic, and oils( its been 20yrs but i am looking at getting back into these). I also etch glass and have done scrimshaw, and sew, phew... I am venturing into watercolors currently. one of those mediums I have avoided since child hood and those cheep watercolor sets that No one took the time to show me, could do something other than glob colors on a piece of paper. They are now quiet interesting.. and a palette, brushes and a jar of water reside on my desktop. NO NOT ON MY COMPUTOR..... tongue.gif Thats securely hidden under the desk.. so does that make it a desk-under computor?

I am always looking for inspiration for drawing and direction when my muse wanders off, and it is so nice to draw with others. I spend my school year working with youth in the 4H programs doing art projects, this has been most rewarding.

My current focus has been speed drawing, for lack of anything else to call it. The objective is to get as much representation as quickly as possible.. usually 15-20 minutes. I then photograph it and at a later time add another few minutes and photograph that too. Understanding that the size I am working with dictates the amount of detail I can achieve in a given period of time - NUTS? I think so too but it has been a wonderful challenge for me. and my skills are improving. It is developing in me a faith in both my training and my innate skill, forcing me to let my hand reproduce what my eye sees with minimal conscious thought.. As I set up my album I will include some of these practice pieces.

I look forward to drawing with you all and sharing..Sorry about being long winded, but I'M SO EXCITED!!!
