A frontal portrait of a teenage girl challenges artists to draw long strands of realistic hair with contour hatching. A grid (optional) helps establish realistic facial proportions and render accurate outlines of the individual strands of hair. Crosshatching is used for shading the background, facial forms, features, neck, and jewelry.

Anyone have any success in drawing such detailed hair? My outline and facial shading come out fine but I cannot get the detail for the hair. Any helpful hints will be appreciated.

My advice would be to focus on individual strands. At first it may look very daunting, but if you focus on the hair one strand at a time you'll be surprised at the results. Check out my album for my drawing of Clio from a while back.

I spent around 15 hours on this, mostly on the hair. Thanks for the lesson. This one definitely teaches patience. wink.gif

Wow this was a challenge. But I made it through. My Clio turned out ok but she doesn't actually look exactly like the master drawing. mellow.gif
