Cartoon animation challenge May 3rd . May 22nd

Hello my name is Clara and I was challenged by dear Brian to challenge you, so I am honoured to be your host for the next 20 days.
I know very little about cartoons, but I am learning and I hope to learn allot more with this challenge and your help. Everybody is welcome to be part of this challenge

Remember Harvey Comics? Of course you do! They brought us lovely childhood icons such as Richie Rich, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Spooky, Wendy the good Witch, Hot Stuff the little devil, little Dot, little Lotta and many others.."

My challenge;
Pick one of the reference images or any other from the Harvey Comics, draw and animate it. If you wish to create your very own cartoon, feel free to do so.

Since many of you might not have the proper programs to do animations, this challenge will have to parts

1st. part: Animated cartoons
2nd part: Drawn cartoons

1st part:
All you have to do is; pick and draw a cartoon , put it into photo shop, paint shop or any other program you have, do the animation and post it.
For those who do have photo shop or paint shop but are not familiar with how to do animations you can check out the following links and learn how to do some simple animations.

http://www.myjanee.com/tuts/animation/animation.htm

http://www.grafx-design.com/05psp.html

http://avanimation.avsupport.com/files/how-to/How-to01.htm

Remember this is still a drawing challenge so please post your original drawing before animating it

2nd part.

You just have to draw one of the reference photos or any other Harvey characters, in any medium you like and post it.

Brian David Dekter
Wow Clara this is fantastic !!! what a great job you did putting this together and thank you for being our host. I absolutely love the reference pictures you provided. I remember when I was a kid my parents would take me and my brothers out to a Chinese restaurant every so often and they would always give us Harvey Comic books on our way out. As a kid I think I enjoyed that more then the food. smile.gif

I decided to try Little Lotta.... she was harder to draw then I thought ...this really was a fun challenge... I hope to try more... smile.gif

Happy drawings, Brian.
Cyn

Kay, You are simply amazing, your drawings are very nice and you did three already, thank you so much rolleyes.gif Keep them comming hun wub.gif

Cyn, Yes, looks like Brian can convince anyone to do what he wants biggrin.gif, I'm looking forward to see your drawings or animations wink.gif

Here's Hotstuff throwing some lightning....watch out for him laugh.gif
This file is a bit big, Hope you can open it unsure.gif
I made two drawings in diferent positions, then added them into paint shop colored and animated them.
it didn't come out very nice it's running to quickly sad.gif

[attachmentid=10196][attachmentid=10197][attachmentid=10195]
Kaly
Forgot to say the animation on Hotstuff with lightning took me about 3 hours to do blink.gif
Now look what he did...He electrified himself laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif He still looks happy though.
I used the same drawing as before.
This one was quick took me about 10 minutes, I just used 3 frames and all I changed in each one was the position of the electric beams.

Thanks Ernest, hope you can find some time to join us, your drawings are always an inspiration smile.gif
ElenaM
O brigado, Clara(hope it's correct). I do appreciate the link.I will check it out. In case i get lost my husband speaks portuguese, he lived in Brazil for a while studying so he can help me.

I like your Little Audrey Elena... I think she is adorable. smile.gif

I decided to try Richie Rich.....fun challenge Clara! thanks. smile.gif
Kaly
Brian, I'm glad you're enjoying the challenge.
Nice Richie Rich.
How do you color them so nicely? mine always come with white pixels, sometimes after filling with color I still have to go again with brushes and still doesn't cover very well mad.gif

Elena, that is correct (obrigado) smile.gif That's nice that your husband knows portugueese, in fact that site is from a Brazilian girl, its very complete and explains everything very well. But it does take time to learn everything... wacko.gif I hope you find the time to try it out wink.gif

Here's another one, this time I tried Wendy and did two versions of the same picture. hope you like it
This one is dedicated to everyone at drawspace.

Brian David Dekter
Thanks Clara, I just started learning all the tools on photo shop and find myself now using the eye drop tool to match colors and the burn tools for shading.

I love your Wendy she is beautiful!!!

Clara you inspired me to lean how to animate wub.gif ....this is my very very first try with one of my drawings.

thanks for the push! smile.gif....edited to add my second try...

Brian
Kaly
Thanks Brian, Way to go tongue.gif Once you get into this you can't turn back laugh.gif

Good start with those animations wink.gif
The one on Cyn is running a bit fast... next time try to put in two layers of each, that will make it run slower...Hope you know what I mean...

keep them comming
Cyn
When you are animating with Photoshop, and you have your layers ready, click on the tab to transfer them into Image Ready. On the little animation window, (if you don't see it, go to the top and click on window, animation, and it will show the layers in the animation window) Once it is in the animation section, there will be little numbers under each layer. Right click on them and you can set the timers. You can speed them up or slow them down. Most of the speeds are in fractions of seconds. You can set each one until you have the speed you want. Sometimes it's fun to make one frame stay on longer than the others. Just play with it. It's fun. biggrin.gif

I love the animations you are all doing. They are just wonderful.. Of course I have a soft spot for cyn-kid. laugh.gif

Cyn
Thank you for explaining this, I work with pain shop pro so I'm not familiar with photoshop, and by what you have said it's a little different. cool.gif wub.gif
Brian David Dekter
Thanks Clara and thanks Cyn!!! smile.gif

Photo shop is very new to me in general let alone animations... I have figured out how to slow it down but now I can not figure out why I can't keep the text with in the image??? or anything I add with in the image...and now I forgot how I did it with Mickey unsure.gif ...it seems to flash separately now.
Kaly
Hi Brian,
Did you do two separated boards? or did you write the text on the same board as the image? if so did you create a layer between image and text?, if you did this, them you must merge the layers. That's how its done in paint shop. Hope this helps unsure.gif cool.gif
It still looks good to me though wink.gif
ElenaM
Guys, tell me if i understand correctly. Do I have to draw several positions of the character in order to have more frames and then animate it with a program?Because this can be done also with gif animator as long as you save the files as gifs.I'm new to this but i know that this how it is done in film cartoons.
Kaly

You are right Elena you don't have to do several drawings, unless you want to change the position of, lets say the legs, like Lance did with RR. Otherwise you just have to save as gifs and then put them in diferent places on each frame. You can also change the position of a gif by using the tool "mirror" that way you can make the figure turn left and right.
that's how I have done this tweety

http://www.drawspace.com/forums/index.php?...st&id=10111

I'm also kind of new to this, so I hope I am explaining this well enough.
Kisses
ElenaM
I have some funny ideas about her hair and hand so i will do the drawings, Clara.
Obrigado,
beijos e abracos
Brian David Dekter
Hi all.

after spending about 4 hours today learning how to make animations I think I am finally getting it. I figured out what I was doing wrong and that is I was not using a duplicate copy layer for my frames.

Elena I am using photo shop elements 5.... I believe you are correct.... and there are many ways to do it....you can also add frames with the same copy while adding different colors or text. Here is my fourth attempt .....and time for me to take a break because I am starting to see in double vision... biggrin.gif
Mr Ofir
Wow! Great drawings and animations everyone.
Here are
Casper
[attachmentid=10252]

and Baby Huey
[attachmentid=10251]
Lance500
There are so many fantastic drawings and animation here. You have done really good with this challenge Clara.

I know what Brian means about taking a break. In the end im sure my brain was starting to hurt wacko.gif
Kaly
Hi everyone

I'm so delighted with everyone's work, and I'm having a great time with this challenge. Thank you all wub.gif

Elena, can't wait to see what you're up to wink.gif

Brian, thats a very nice animation on Mickey, I know what you mean with the double vision wacko.gif blink.gif
This really takes allot of time to learn how to do these...

Mr. Offir, thank you for joining us. Your casper is as always in your unique style witch I aprreciate allot, and Baby Huey is adorable.

Lance, thank you for your kind works, I'm very happy that people are having fun with this challenge rolleyes.gif
Brian David Dekter
Hi Mr.Ofir.... I have not seen Baby Huey for a long time....great drawings.

Thanks Clara, this sure takes practise... I am still having problems but I am learning...

here are two more attempts.....sure is fun smile.gif
Kaly
Brian, those animations are wonderful :wub:they are running just fine now wink.gif thank you so much for this.

Ok here's my new animation
This one took a while longer...I actualy drew one image and then traced the other 9, just changed the arm and the amount of ice'cream on each of them. then I inked them one by one wacko.gif , scanned and put them into paint shop, colored each one of them blink.gif wacko.gif Made a new frame with my background, and them copied each image into the background frame, one by one, saving each one of them, them put them into the animation program and ...VOILA ...hope you enjoy it...took me about 7 hours to get this one done wacko.gif
It wasn't a perfect trace, for the hole image moves...at least the table should be still!!...boy****this is hard!!!
I could have saved myself from dawing 10 images, all I needed was to diferent positions on the arms, and the ice-cream could easely have been taken of in the program...but I just realised that after sad.gif

[attachmentid=10278][attachmentid=10279][attachmentid=10280][attachmentid=10281][attachmentid=10282][attachmentid=10283][attachmentid=10284][attachmentid=10285][attachmentid=10286][attachmentid=10287][attachmentid=10288]
Brian David Dekter
wub.gif Thanks Clara! and honestly I would have never come this far with animations with out the push from you...although I still have much to learn I am happy now I am getting some experience with them. As you say they can be time consuming which leads me to talk about the work you have just done. smile.gif

I don't have much to say other then.....I love it!!!!!!

thanks for being such a wonderful host.

I have been busy but tried another....this one is for Mom...I have not actually made anything move yet other then color but I will work on that next.
Kaly
Thank you Brian, you are very sweet, but the effort is yours alone!!besides you pushed me too, or I wouln't be here right now smile.gif

This last one is so cute, and so sweet of you to dedicate it to your mom, she must be a very proud mom wub.gif

kisses

Guys, I am sick and tired of coloring por lil'Audrey. I made four more positions on tracing paper, scanned and then printed and colored them. Took me an hour the coloring alone.I need a shower and then scan and play in animation shop. Wish me luck. It's my first funny idea this way.I will post the steps,of course when I'm finished.

Best luck wink.gif
ElenaM
Ok. Here it is what i accomplished so far.

the four more positions(sorry for the colors I ran out of markers)
and two animations, one transparent and one opaque.
[attachmentid=10292]

[attachmentid=10290][attachmentid=10291]

The idea is that when lil' Audrey smells the flower her hair stants to an end and the colors change(dress, flowers, etc.) then she is pleased and lifts a leg in the air.I like the idea more than what i achieved. Maybe I will try more.
Cyn
Wow I am so impressed with everyones drawings and animations.

ElenaM, I love your lil' Audry.. Great job..

I really need to find some time, but as you all know, animations are a killer when it comes to time. wacko.gif tongue.gif
ElenaM
Cyn, thanks a lot.
Clara, only now i saw yours, it is gorgeous. Bravo!
Lance500
Clara, the work you put into the large girl cartoon really paid off. Excellent drawings and very funny
Nice to see Brian dedicated his cartoon to the most important person in the world
And ElenaM, you did well to keep track and sync the movements in your animation
ElenaM
Thank you Lance. I like yours better. I am not satisfied with mine so I will try to add more frames.Besides i color it by hand and it shows. I din't know how to do it in paint shop.I will have to try that too.
Kaly
wow Elena, that's amazing, I love it!!! thank you wub.gif nobody will beleive its yout first animation!!
You could color them in the program too if you wished to.

Thanks Lance and Cyn.
