claudia..i am no teacher and i am no expert but i will try..first of all i dont find much wrong with your beginning outline..do you have a tortillion?..look at your photo and find your darkest darks..put them in and blend them with the tortillion, now look for the second darks and do the same and when you come to some slight shadow, there should be enough pencil stuff on your tortillion to put them in ..

always find your darkest darks and work from there at least that is what i was taught..now i hope i may have helped at least a little..

hi,

It would help if you scanned and posted the source, if you are doing it from a picture.

Other wise, if you are working from imagination I think you are doing well. Just remember the head is turned so the neck will not be in the center of the face but to the side oposite to the direction the head is facing.

As far as shading. The neck is like a cylinder but an odd shaped one. lol

Hope this helps a little.

Hi Claudia, the structure of the head is symetrical, your structure is fairly good ,i think you could improve the eyes, the left and right eye do not match, you have captured the neck line on the left in the correct position,it needs to be enhanced so that it has structure.Once you are happy with the structure, start defining the contours by shading the face,at the moment the drawing lacks tonal value. Also look at the nose, it needs to be narrowed down slightly, there is too much flesh on either side.

This is a good drawing, keep working at it.
I hope this helps, there are some very good lessons, for reference that you can download.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
You're all so super to take time to help.

I'm gonna keep working on it - I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyone here familiar with coloring in photoshop???

I need a little help with that -- any place you might point me to?

Here's an example of something I did - but had a little trouble with the hair...and skin...
but you'll get the idea.

Thank you!!!

Hello Claudia,

I think that version is much improved. Good job.

One little thing. . . it seem to me that one iris is bigger than the other . . . I tend to have trouble with getting the eyes just right so I really look a the eyes on other folks drawings. I'm a beginning drawer (started in February) and have only done one portrait so far. I think it came out pretty good likeness, very readily recognizable as my daughter, but one of the eyes never did look quite perfect despite my measuring it very carefully with the photo several times. Just couldn't figure out what wasn't right.

Thanks, Rainy,
Yeah - I noticed that too. Thank you for helping me with that.
I am not that good at portraits - but I really want to try to improve my skills.

Did you post your daughtert's portrait yet?

I started in March...so we're newbies together. smile.gif

I tried to fix her iris - a little better than before?

Claudia
