All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!
The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch thats fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that?€™s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.
You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.
Reminder:
This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.
There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.
If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.
This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.
I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.
I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.
If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Nice job Vicki. I have always loved this photo of Friday. She is now an old girl of 10 with lots of gray showing in her face. This photo was the one I took when we went to pick her out from the litter. She looked so sad.

I really like the shell in blues. I have sketched it several times in just graphite. I can never make the spiral part look 3D. My sketch always looks flat.
Makes me want to see the shell in all different colors.

Wow Vicki you've been busy. I haven't even started one yet.
Marisa it looks just like her.
It's always nice to see things in pastel as I don't do those. I can't stand the messiness or the sound they make on the paper.

Great drawings everyone.
I'm a bit embarrassed to post my drawing, because it came out really bad., I wasn't sure if I should post or not, but then I just though: Why not?! that way you can tell me what I did wrong!!
I tried to use colors, I found this box of paint tubes (guaches) the kind you use in school, so decided to use them....I messed up!!

For me its dificult to paint clouds,

Jeanne, I just added my poetry site to my signature. They say that you can write poetry better in your mothertongue rather than in a foreign language, well i felt comfortable enough to write in English even if it is not my mothertongue.I called Peruzele Poetry Divan from the name for turquoise stones in Romanian, peruzele.

Kaly I think it was a good attempt. I think the paint just got too thick on you. Try it again with pencil. In fact if you do it several more times, it will get easier each time. I found that out when I did a self portrait every day for a month. I've done that twice now. Really gets you to look closely.
Elena I will take a look at your poetry. I'm glad it is in English or I would be lost. I know a very little bit about French and Spanish but that's it and I wouldn't want to have to read poetry even in one of those.
fondlelak good job. In the thumbnail you can't tell your background is squiggles. I like them.
Vickie that looks like my Friday. She is so sweet but can look just that sad sometimes even now. My other dog Penny won't let her have any toys. She always takes them.

Great pictures, Jangra. Unfortunately I don't have time draw one. A lot of work in school and family. I had to paint a poster about Spain for a school competition. The whole class should participate, but somehow they've managed to put all the work on me. But I can't refuse, because our teacher is sick and she left me as her substitute. I don't want to let her down and our win would make her very happy. I've been making that placard in school untill 8 PM and still couldn't finish it. Now I'll draw my brother's character from one game. And probably I'll find (get) more work to do

, so I have no time for this challenge, sorry. But I'll try to find some spare minutes to draw a picture.
Jangra
May 8 2008, 09:20 PM
Ninla sounds like you are very busy. But very nice of you to take the responsibility of the substitute and to try to win the competition. Good luck and maybe you can participate next time.

pmowen very nice job. It is so fun seeing all my little Fridays. Welcome and I am glad you picked my week to join. I see we were born the same year (you about 4 months before me). Nice to meet you. Stick around and join us again. We have one of these weekly with different hosts and different photos.

Paulette looks like you had fun with yours. I still haven't done anything. I did finally get my DSL finished installing tho. Only took 4 days. There was a radio suppressor on my phone box. I don't know why. Former owners must have put it on. After it was removed, the DSL works. So nice to finally have it usable.

[attachmentid=10329] [attachmentid=10330]
One is done only with a graphite pencil and the other one is coloured with aquarell coloured pencils. I think that the black and white one turned out better. I'm not good at those pencils...

Kaly I think this one is much better. Was it easier for you? Try it again and see if it gets faster and easier. Or at least do a portion again.
I used to do a co workers children every year for 4 or 5 years. I did their school pictures. In graphite. From the first one, to the last one, vast improvement. Even tho I did a different photo each year, you could see how I had progressed with my sketching.
Keep up the good work.

Clara,I see nothing wrong with either of your cloud pictures. I think the problem is that there is nothing else but clouds. If you was to put in some land at the bottom then it may give the picture more context. Just a thought

[attachmentid=10340]Hi all,
I found some time to work on Friday, the six week old pup, and bring it to completion. Thank you for being here and for Brenda who not only teaches us but gives us this platform to show our work and meet with one an other for support and encouragement. I now have a reason to work on a deadline and see the finish of a drawing. Without this incentive it is easy, for me at least, to start a lot of projects and not complete any of them. So saying I herewith enclose one copy or Friday!
