Hello,
I am switching places with Venus this week for the challenge, she will do next week.
I hope you find something you want to draw.
Paulette

[attachmentid=10376] [attachmentid=10377]

[attachmentid=10378] [attachmentid=10379]

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that's fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that's great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavors to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Great shots, Paulette. I like the play of light and shadows in all of the pics. Here is my attempt at the OK hand.Hands are a challenge for me and I also love drawing them. I am not fully satisfied with this first try, though. So i might redo it later this week.

Great pics, alright.. I love the vase and the lighting on it, but it may be a little to much for me. Hmmmmm. I love the hand too and the big ol' cogs, wheels, whatever they are. They seem really complicated. Hmmmm...
I better get my pencil and think of something. laugh.gif

Great quick hand sketch Elena.

I am tempted to do it too - over on Wet Canvas a while ago we did a "Hand a Day" thread where we sketched our hands in different positions every day for thrity days - it was terrific how we improved in that time - well worth the effert to do that exercise.
ElenaM
another quick one: 20 minutes at crassulaceae in crayons and crayola Cp.

Hi Cyn,
Don't forget you can do just a piece of them as well.

Hello Sue,
I hope you will try it.

Elena,
That is great, it's fun doing quick sketches, the colour is great.
We call those Chicken and Hens, does any one else call them that?

Thanks Kim, I hope you will.
ElenaM
THanks Paulette. I use a botanical name the generic name for the family osf these plants is Crassulaceae, the genus is Sempervivus. Now the common name can be Chicken and Hen or other name in the family.I love Crassulaceae they are succulent plants and i have my own genus Crassula ovata which in english is called Friendship tree or jade plant.Maybe I can take a photo of it someday for a challenge.
paulette4
That would make a great challenge.
Sadly I am death to plants.sad.gif My husband is the gardener in the family.

We've always called them "Hens and Chicks". I have several growing outside my front door in a large pot. They are so easy to grow. You pick those little chicks off and place them in some dirt anywhere and they will root and grow. As you can tell, mine are just now coming back so they don't look so great yet. We've had a very long Winter this year in Nebraska.

[attachmentid=10402]

As for plants... There's only one thing that could grow near me - my cactus.
paulette4
I guess quick sketches are the rule this time around. tongue.gif
Here is mine.
[attachmentid=10403]

Glad I'm not alone,Cyn!

Nice job Crashman! I'll look forward to the others.

BKLuver, Those are going to be beauties. You're right they are easy to move, they'll even grow in a bit of dirt on a rock, so long as I keep my distance. tongue.gif

These sketches are great practice. You're doing great with them Elena!

Hi Brian are you drawing this week?

Siks,I think the better we get at the quick ones the better we will be altogether. I think you did great at catching the light.
Kaly
And I thought I was the only women on earth that wasn't good with plants. even my Indian canes die sad.gif and the are suposed to simbolize happiness sad.gif sad.gif

[attachmentid=10404] I got this pic on the internet, I don't have a camara, or I would take a pic of the one I've got on my kitchen window, maybe it's better this way for mine is already brown blush.gif blush.gif

BUT I'm very good with animals, I have a cat that I found on my door step, he's mother was wild and died, she was ran over by a car, and he survived without a mom for 8 days, then I found him, took care of him, and now he's a very happy 3 year old cat, sleeps with me in my bed every night rolleyes.gif

Paullete great pics I think I'l try the hand wink.gif
Great drawings everyone
paulette4
I'm better with animals too. Well not fish. sad.gif tongue.gif

I 'll watch for your hand.

Hi Paulette,

Attack of the plant killers... add me to the lineup ... The society for prevention for cruelty to plants has a "wanted poster" on me. My last victim was a Valentine gift minature rose bush.
We do fine with animals, fish, reptiles, birds, etc. But plants, even aquarium plants are doomed. ph34r.gif

You, too? I was so excited to get my sweet, little rose bush - the dainty flowers are so adorable. But it didn't last long for me. I hate to admit, I have several "non-living" plants in my house.

I'm trying to draw the vase in the woods. I'm so slow, have to get every little detail in there. Gotta learn how to loosen up and sketch the most important stuff. Anyway, did anyone else notice there's a shadow on the tree shaped like a heart?? biggrin.gif
Kaly

[attachmentid=10436][attachmentid=10437]HI
I managed to get two of them done. I know the axle (?) on the cogs is a bit long, but I couldn't face doing it over again.

Just realised, the scan of the hand is rubbish! I've had to buy a new scanner/printer and I'm not used to it yet. I'll learn - eventually!

Vicky,
Great job, the horse I saw was looking pretty good.

Hee, hee, Marisa,I would wonder if it was an artist thing, but I now many here are great gardeners.

BK, ph34r.gif I get rid of the victims real quick.

Good work John!

Melinda, Nope didn't notice the heart. smile.gif It is up to you how you tackle a drawing, you can make it a full out piece of art or you can do a quick sketch. That is up to you and the amount of time you have. Although I do try my hardest to inspire you guys to do the masterpiece. biggrin.gif

Well done Clara! The Plant Killer Society? "PKS will be there for you, need that pesky house plant taken down a notch? We can do it! Sorry we don't do weeds!" tongue.gif tongue.gif

Nice job Cyn!

Norma, Great sketches!

I just have not had time to draw these past couple of weeks - so much to do with the end of the school year. I did finally take 10 minutes this morning and sketched up the hand. I picked it only because I draw hands a lot and figured I could do it quickly. I am so looking forward to having some real time to spend on my art!

Hi IfUcan,
Excellent start, welcome to the challenges!

BK,
Good work, will you have the whole summer off?

This is great John. Love how you tucked the little one in!

Mr. Star,

Aww how cute!! That was my impression of that picture too, was a mama and her baby, but the baby looked so lonely... and you brought them together! Looks really great.

Hi IfUcan,

BK,
Good work, will you have the whole summer off?

Yes and no. We actually go back the middle of August. I also have a class I will be taking for school in June and I need to go back in July and sort through things to get them straightened out for next year. We are also getting some new cupbaords, we hope, so will need to get in probably in August and rearrange all of our supplies. It will be such a thrill to actually have storage space for a change! We have one fairly large room with two classes going at the same time for the majority of the day. One side is Pottery with wheels and sinks, pug mill and clay barrels; the other side is tables and chairs for any other art classes. On that side are also all of our kilns for firing the pottery. Close quarters.
mmmmmmme
Used #2 mechanical pencil (is that the equivelant to HB or 2B?) and 2b for shading. Hint of colored pencils (yes, my son's cheap crayolas) biggrin.gif
Mr Ofir
Great drawings everyone. Here's mine:

[attachmentid=10465]Had tried to do a sketch in ball point pen. This is a second effort. I spent so much time trying to control the pen I lost the form and proportion. It is a slip shod job, but I learned to stay away from ball point pens for anything but signing checks

bkluver; such a short time for such a great looking hand.

mrstarstuff; I like your hen and chick and the gear-train. I will try a sharpie the next time, might have better control.

Melinda Shiminski; I like your vase. The delicate color you added sets it off nicely and makes it an impressive drawing.

Frank - I like your 'old pump'...I recommend the Zig Millennium pens (01 and 05) they are cheap at Walmart, use the Sharpie "Fine Point" for the heavier lines. Also, take a look at tutorials at About.com.

John

mrstarstuff; Thank you for the tip. I will look for those pens at Wallmart.

BK,
It sounds like it must get crazy in your classroom! I hope you get the cupboards and lots of drawing time in! smile.gif

Hi Melinda, you did great with the vase. Love the touch of colour! Not sure about the #2 pencil??

Mr. Ofir, wonderful job with the vase!

Frank, I love to doodle with my ballpoint pens, unfortunately they do give you grief. It is hard to get a good one now, seems to me they used to just go and go. Looks to me like you did a fair job despite the pen. biggrin.gif

Hello Exactly! Will you be joining us? smile.gif Never too late!
