Learning to draw is learning to see. Values are the most important ingredients in realistic drawing.

This lesson was O.K.

The lesson itself is great, but I cannot see the different types of hatching and crosshatching in the drawing exercises. I'm not sure if I just can't see them or if it's my computer, but I can't see a difference between the different types of shading/hatching/crosshatching used in the exercises at the end of the lesson.

Otherwise, I've really been enjoying and learning from Drawspace!

I wondered about this at first as well, but when I reread the instructions they say that you're supposed to use any of the shading techniques you want (the ones presented early in the lesson) to render the shading values.

So my understanding is that we're not supposed to copy a particular method of shading for the exercises; we're supposed to simply notice how light or dark a given section is and render it with whichever technique(s) we'd like.

that's what I thought too, but just wasn't sure if that was right. Thanks, this helps!

I caught on about 3/4 of the way through this that if I squint, the values become clearer. The biggest portion of the triangle is too dark, but I think I got the sphere spot on. It took me scanning it and looking at it on screen to realize the sphere was lopsided and too small, though. smile.gif

On worksheet 2, I think I got the values a little closer. Still need to work on that symmetry. On the values, it is difficult making the grayish pencil compete with the bluish black from the printer.IPB Image

Again with the symmetry, I should have made the middle circle a touch bigger. I think from now on, I'm going to use a black prismacolor to get that darkest value. I used a super-pointy 8B and still not dark enough!

And finally, worksheet 4

Although I feel there could have been more tutorial walkthrough in the first section, I saw the value of this lesson.

By completing all four worksheets, I could really feel my hatching and crosshatching skills improving.

Now, before staring any major project, I will make at least 20 hatching and crosshatchings just for practice.

Thank you for this Brenda.

Never realized... that from scratch to here... I have improved.... at least I think so...
but it is a LOT tougher then it looks... especially the blending... unsure.gif

Hi,

This is my first time attempting to do 'shading'.
I am trying to draw as displayed in Illustration 06-01 (the first image with the various lines).

I find it difficult to draw these lines, and I was wondering, if there is a special technique to draw the various lines. I.e., is it better to draw small, quick lines which may create a more random picture, or should each line be slow and precisely constructed? Or does it perhaps depend on what you want to do, and in that case, are there any general rules to follow? (I.e., the silky smooth hear seems to be created by well-considered long lines, while the 'my morning hair-do' biggrin.gif seems to made by quick, short lines???)

I have tried various ways, but would like to hear from others what you find best/easiest.

Thanks,
Runey

As most of these lessons, they are not overly complicated, but enough info to help in direction.
I would have liked to seen a close up of the Crystal Angel cross hatching, for better understand of detail.

unsure.gif Does anybody have any tips on how to draw the sphere type thing in 6-02, the one in the bottom left hand corner? I can't seen to get it started.
Thanks for any help smile.gif

I didn't do as well on the shading and hatching as I would have liked. wacko.gif But I am improving on my shapes. I needed more explanation on the hatching and shading. Anyway I will keep practicing. blink.gif

It doesn't look like anyone answers questions here, right?

I think this issue that the drawings are of realism that we see the figures or objects that make up lines, curves, circles, squares.

This lesson was very beneficial to learn how to shade and add value to my drawings. certain ones were a little difficlut.
artistfreak09
The lesson is fantastic however a bit harder. I did not do very well in my art work but I will try again.
Please note I did not try very hard in the art work below, but I will try harder next time.
I am sure this hatching and cross hatching will come in handy in the later paths of artwork and shading

I decided to make a couple of changes so I could learn more about the pencils. The lines and the circle are done with a 6B. The darker side is done with a 3B 3 times and the lighter side was done with a 3H with cross hatching so I can experience the difference. I realize I need to work on circles. Hope you like it.

This lesson was really helpful with values and proportions even thou it was done 3 AM.
