My father did a lot of drafting, so he always had a pencil in his hand. Both of my older brothers were interested in art in high school, and one of them still draws unbelievably good dragons and fantasy. The need to create must run in the family...

I have a brother who is two years older than me who always took art classes. So, I was the musician. I wanted to be a singer one day but, faced the facts that everyone wanted to be a singer (no such thing as American Idol back then!) so I got married and had a family instead. In my later 20's I began drawing and painting a lot of different things on wood; I made wooden decorative things like shelves and boxes, etc. I had my own little business. Then I started drawing my own greeting cards and just drawing in general. I did a lot of work for others such as my kids schools and the Music Department at the college where I worked. At that time I was self taught but I finally went back to school for my BA in Studio Art and Art Ed. I loved it! My brother even said "gee, Sis, you are talented!". That was nice. smile.gif

I don't recall a specific age that I started drawing, but I always remember drawing. When other kids were out playing, I was inside creating film strips, theatres out of shoe boxes or colouring elaborate drawings that I had made.

I drew or created in some form from childhood and it became more structured when I went to England to live and studied art there privately under Tom Greenshields as well as taking classes with other well known artists. I've had a mix of traditional art school and self teaching, both of which have good and bad aspects.

There was a gap in drawing and painting when my children and life took my time and energy, but that is a frequent occurance with most artists - these gaps. The gaps weren't art free, but my time was limited then and I couldn't commit myself to producing art regularly.

I jumped back in with both feet and haven't looked back since.

I suppose I have yet started to draw, means I just started? Well that's my case. If you take the captains age and divide it by the number of crewmember, then multiply by by 0.666, that should tell you what age it is...
Never too old!!! But before getting there.

Since you asked, i will confess: my passion for drawing started early, 3-4 years old using colored pencils to finish biggrin.gif the illustrations in the books that my great grandmother used to read to me. The usual favorite was the human face. The primary school was fun because i loved school and the drawing assignments (cheating my family about them, in the sense that i announced that i had assignaments in drawing when in reality i didn't have that many).
The passion started to consume me in the elementary, In Romania of the 60's we had drawings classes twice or three times a week and a drawing textbook. My teachers noticed my interest and called me to the teacher's room in order to advise me to go to an art school. I was 12 then. I loved to draw and use also watercolor but i didn't want to limit my education only to learning how to draw well, I wanted to study everything and later on to make a choice. So I didn't tell anyone at home about my teachers advice.Indeed my choice was late about 19 and it was foreign languages(I got an MA in philology), not drawing.
Occasionally i took a pen or a brush in all these years but before this January 2008 I was never so serious about art.Now at 53 I have plenty of time to kill in an esthetic way blush.gif .And I love it. wub.gif

THis is one of my drawings from the elementary school art days(age 12)

Since as far back as I can remember. Here's one I drew of my mom while I was in kindergarten. For some reason, I didn't like the hair so I scribbled it out and re-drew it. I also remember that I wanted to giver her a big smile.

Interresting stories smile.gif
As far as I can remember I always liked drawing, I have two sisters and plenty of cousins and they as well always liked drawing, but back in our teens we all wanted to be actrisses rolleyes.gif so we did allot of amateur theater in the village where I live, with a big group of friends ( we were the leaders though wink.gif specially one of my cousins my younger sister and I) and when it came to sceneries, clothing, and averything envolving the space/stage, we were in charge of doing it happy.gif , so we drew, painted, sew, stitched quite a lot, IT WAS FUN. Then I got married had a son and live changed....but I continued to draw allot, nothing great though, for I had no formation in drawing, one day my son took all my drawings to school to show them off to his friends, and lost them ALL mad.gif sad.gif A couple years back I decided to start painting, I love canvas....and this year I found drawspace, and I guess this is when I really gave my heart to drawing.

PS I am also usualy in charge of painting my friends faces and my own when its CARNAVAL laugh.gif
here are some examples of my face paintings:

I have been drawing about a year and a half. So I guess I was 59. laugh.gif I just never tried before. My life is extremely busy and I have no time, but I draw in just about every spare minute, which sometimes is every 2 weeks at 3:30 in the morning when I should be sleeping. laugh.gif Yeah, I know my avatar is about 6 years old now and I need to update it. I have aged quite a bit since then. My son and my grand daughter moved in. wacko.gif tongue.gif

In childhood I drew like pretty much every child does.

In adulthood, I started a week ago, at the age of 32.

I started maybe a year ago..Before then I was just sketching when i was bored..I was always doing some sports but that`s just good for your body smile.gif my mind was still quite heavy if you know what I mean, but ever since I started to draw/paint it has gone better. Now I draw daily at home and in school also..I would never believe that if I have a bad mood or feel depressed I draw and I`ll feel better it`s just amazing..Also funny thing is that unconsciously I draw what bothers me it`s very interesting..smile.gif

I am 59 now, and have been trying to learn how to draw for about 1 and a half yrs. now. I was not "artistic" in my childhood, I was more musical and did musical theater in high school and college.
My sister is the artist in my family. She persuaded me to take an oil painting class with her and surprisingly I did very well. This started me on tole/decorative/folk painting. I have been painting for about 5 years, but just recently got into drawing. I am really enjoying drawing. This site has really helped me grow and inspires me to do more.

I liked to draw as a child, but it was in my early twenties that I did some 'serious' drawing. That got shuffled to the back of the deck for the next 40 years or so, until I started drawing a few months ago at age 67.

John

ps. - Clara, now I know why you don't have time for drawing....it's from hanging out at Nilton's Bar! tongue.gif

gyps, you've got plenty of time to learn and hone your skills!!! I started to learn to draw "properly" almost two years ago at the age of 47.
It was on a forum like this that I learned the skills I now have and I'll always be grateful for it.
All it takes is lots of practice, practice, practice smile.gif

i was little , every time i draw , but my first character was a cat called "noteinteresa " , when i was five

Ask a 5 year old when he started drawing and he can't remember and here we have 40-50 year olds who know exactly when they started. I think that's rather funny. biggrin.gif

I've been drawing for as long as I can remember - my mum had me entering all those childrens art competitions and more often than not, I won. When I outgrew those I slowed down a bit, and it wasn't until I realised that I wouldn't be able to get into university for a science course that I really decided to get drawing again. So, around 16 I really sat down and started teaching myself the basics. I'm 19 now and about to go to uni for art, hopefully leading to a nice creative career biggrin.gif

I started drawing at age 25. I was reading an internet forum on technology concerning where to get good art for web sites. Someone recommended the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." I ordered the book and started drawing. I got all the way to the final exercise which was to do a self portrait. I got busy and didn't do a self portrait until a couple of years laters. Since then I have been drawing regularly.

Love that book. I've checked it out from the library several times, still didn't get all the way through it, but it's really fascinating stuff. Teaches you to access your "right brain mode" which is also useful for many real life situations. cool.gif

Oh, I remember all too well when I started drawing, cause I got a spanking for it. Apparently, I was too young to know you should use paper and not walls and floors and cupboard doors, or your sister when she is sleeping with permanent markers! smile.gif In kindergarten, we all had to color blue jays, and I got reprimanded for making mine a red bird instead, so I guess the creative (and stubborn) streak has always been there! lol

I drew some in my teen years, even took an art course in highschool.. The teacher said I should keep drawing but I stopped.

I picked it up again when I was 23 for few months.. even did couple of oil paintings. I stopped again because I got pregnant with my son and thinner fumes where not good for me and making me sick anyways. I should have kept on drawing and painting with different mediums but foolishly I didn't.

A month ago I picked it up again and this time for good. I have an 18 yo daughter who's an artist and seeing her creations awaken that old flame in me. We give each other tons of inspiration. smile.gif

I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon.

Well don't all kids draw? tongue.gif I don't think there were any kids when I was little that didn't draw occasionally.

I remember as a toddler drawing a huge stick figure on my bedroom wall. I read a lot of comics growing up and that kept me pretty interested in drawing.

My mother used to draw and has always had this large charcoal drawing of Native Americans hanging on their wall. It showed three men in a southwestern setting, two riding horses, with a third man hanging limp between them with ropes wrapped around him holding him off the ground. I have no idea anything about the story behind the drawing. But she has not really drawn at all since her late 20s maybe. I asked her once why she stopped and she told me that it made her too nervous (I guess afraid to mess something up really bad on it). I know how she feels. My mind tries to convince me that a drawing I'm about to start on is going to suck so I have to psych myself out a little. I tell myself I'm just practicing, the results don't matter, I don't care if it sucks, etc. So I guess I get whatever natural talent and mental issues along with it from my mom. rolleyes.gif

I remember a teacher having drawing competitions every month one year in junior high. I only entered a drawing I think for 3 of those months, but I won every time I entered one.

I had a comic strip briefly in my college newspaper. Nothing great, but I tried my best.

I really never drew all that often after I got older.

Last October I decided to draw some halloween pictures for my daughters and spent several hours working on each one. (Just plain printer paper and a #2 pencil.)

That got me thinking about really getting into drawing seriously. So I've only had proper materials for serious drawing for a little over a month maybe. Creating something from a piece of paper and a pencil that other people are impressed by is one of the most fascinating ways I can think of to spend my time.

Hopefully I'll be as good as a lot of the people around here one day if I work hard enough.

Sadly, I think not. Kids these days are more likely to sit around watching TV or playing video games than engaging in creative or imaginative activities.

I’ve been drawing since I was a toddler. My parents, teachers and family friends always complimented me on my artwork. My dad encouraged me further by buying me art supplies and books about drawing. I was really lucky to get such encouragement.

In the beginning I liked to copy fantasy scenes from books I’d mix and match bits from different fantasy scenes and paint them in watercolour or oil paint on cardboard. Happy days biggrin.gif

I have recently bought this book with the intention of working through it, how did you find the exercises?

I don't really remember when i first started drawing, I've done it for as long as I can remember, there is actually video of me using chalk of paving stones at the age of about 4 so it's been at least 16 years. I spent 3 years absolutely obsessed with graffiti, some of the stuff people can with cans of paint is absolutely stunning but I was never that good at it, spent 5 years doing artwork digitally (and terribly) but I learned a lot which only came out when my graphics tablet broke and I switched to traditional mediums last September, so I've been drawing properly and with purpose for less than a year.

I guess I started when I was in Kindergarten or before. I really don't remember. However I do remember my mom keeping my little drawings in a box in the basement that I looked at once and a while. But, as I grew up, my artistic talents evolved into other things like music, building, and writing. I've always liked drawing. I'm surprised that that's the road my art mind went. But, being surrounded by other who love to draw kept that little flame of wanting to learn to draw alive! happy.gif

From before the elementary school until approx. 2nd grade of elementary school. I really loved it. My mom says I even drew and wrote with both hands. :-) Then my teacher indoctrinated me into thinking I was bad; she even sent me to the psychologist who, luckily, was smarter than she was, and she (teacher) almost lost her job, but the damage she'd done to me remained. I haven't drawn anything since the end of elementary school (15 years ago) up until March 2010 when I tried the first beginner lesson here at Drawspace. Now I love every second of it and I don't think I'm a complete looser at drawing.

Clara also nice to your face painting I use to do it I use to make tattoos.
