I noticed a website that had ColourSoft pencils for a great price. Does anyone use these, and do you recommend them? Are they erasable? Are they creamy like a crayon or more solid like a colored pencil?

Also curious about the GraphiTint. I know these are erasable, and you can use them for subtle color additions in your drawings... but are they worth it? If anyone has used these please tell what you think of them.

Thanks a lot! -Melinda

i have some of the graphitint..i am not artist enough to tell you what the pros think of them but i will tell you what i think....

i like them, however, they are not as erasable as you may think, the color selection is limited, and i dont think they blend well dry like a colored pencil..however when you add water they blend wonderfully..as for being worth it..i thought they were a lil pricy personally, but good art supplies usually are..
so there, that is about all i can tell you about graphitint

here is a pic done with the grapitint..course in the hands of a pro..it would be much much different

rolleyes.gif Even if you're not a "pro", you're a very good artist, much better than me. Just wait, though, I'll catch up eventually... biggrin.gif

Thanks for the opinion on GraphiTint. That drawing you did looks very nice, and the colors are more vibrant than I imagined. There's so many choices in drawing supplies, it's hard to know where to begin.. huh.gif

wink.gif Melinda, coloursofts are both, creamy yet sturdy for a cp. I have 3 sets of them. I ordered one and when I realized how much I preferred them over Prismacolors I bought 2 more while they were on sale. As for the others I have no clue... cool.gif

Thanks Venus! Sounds like the ColorSoft is exactly what I want. wink.gif

I have used both graphitint and coloursoft pencils. THey are very different from each other but each have unique qualities.

The graphitint pencil colours are subdued when dry and erasibility is limited, not like regular pencil anyway. When wetted, the colours explode and are very different than what the dry is like.

I have a full set of Derwent Coloursoft pencils and like them a lot. I also use Prismacolor pencils and they are easily interchangeable in a drawing. My only criticism about Coloursoft is that the pencils are larger in diameter so don't fit into a regular electric pencil sharpener.

I also use Derwent Drawing Pencils and LOVE how they perform. They're worth looking into as well. They behave like coloured pencils - wax based and lovely earth tones.

Experiment with a 12 pack of both and see what you produce and what you like. Or just buy a few pencils from open stock and experiment.

Thanks Islander.

You're right, of course. I should try a little of each. They both sound excellent, as well as the drawing pencils you mentioned...
I have a Sanford Design Ebony pencil, and love the way it glides on dark, but it doesn't seem to erase.
Well thanks again for all the helpful responses.

I live in Japan right now, so anything I buy has to be online (the military craft store is very limited) so I tend to be extra picky about what to get, because shipping is so expensive. cool.gif

Melinda,

I have to agree with Jeanette. I do not have the coloursoft, but am looking into some. However I have had the Graphitints for some time. I take them when I go sketching, I can get some basics down and as I always carry a waterbrush (which is a type of paintbrush with a plastic waterwell in it - no need to carry water!) can let their colours come aut as I want. They are fun for quick sketches as well as more detailed finishes work.
Here are the colours available in Graphitint - they are as dry and then wetted on one side ( I do this in the back of my sketchbook so I can quickly pick colours); the first sketch I did with them ( the day I got them wink.gif ) ; and a swap card I did a while ago with them - more detail in it :

I hope that you get a few ( or a whole set biggrin.gif ) and give them a go. It does rather depend on the finish that you are looking for though, and if it is more a coloured pencil look you're after then they aren't really what you want.

Hope this helps

Hi Islander. . . I've been thinking about those derwent drawing pencils. . . do you have any samples of work you've done with them? What paper do you use them on? Thanks
IslanderNL
Yes, I have an example done with some of the full range of Derwent Drawing pencils and some done with just 3 of the earth tone pencils which I rather like .

I use a good paper with a little tooth to it, something that you'd use for coloured pencil perhaps. You can experiment a bit and see what the effects are that you like. I do love these pencils.

hi Melinda,
i use prismacolours and i like them, all my cp art is done with them, i have not used coloursofts, although, i think i might look into them, the reviews are too good to ignore.
as for colourtints i didn't like the way the felt dry or with water(this maybe due to my own stile of art) all the same, they seem to be getting alot of good reviews.
