Hello!
I'm your host this week. I hope you like my photos smile.gif

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

I went to a medieval festival few weeks before. And here are few photos from there:

1. A boy chopping some herbs.

My daughter and I sat down and did the pony together in about 20 minutes -- she loves horses! I think her drawing is very sophisticated for a ten year old.

They're both graphite on Strathmore sketch paper, both about 4x5 inches. I think Danielle used more different pencils than I did, and a stump. I just used 2H and 2B 0.5mm mechanical pencils.
ElenaM
very nice, Ernest that you two did the same drawing. Those are the precious moments that enrich the soul of memories, the tenderness of such a scene.I like both drawings.

Wow, an excellent drawing for a 10 year old. I wish I would have her when she gets to high school!

Wow, Ernest! Such a great drawing only in twenty minutes? I love Danielle's horse too smile.gif

Nice witches, Elena. You captured their appearance and character really great!

Kay, nice depth of colour on your pony and good drawing.

Lovely sketch of what would be a hard subject !Audrius! Love that bat that you've got in your signature too.

Ernest, lovely picture of you & your little girl sketching together!! Great pony too. But I think that Danielle, you have outdone Dad. Maybe you need to post your pictures more often, I could almost pat that pony of yours!

Elena I love the witches too - good quick sketch of them.

I like the way this is focused on the hands and the axe. Nice job!
mumwond
Thought I'd try the boy, but missed out the figure at the back. All using a 4B - mainly due to laziness as the rest are all needing sharpening - I've ordered a battery operated sharpener, but I don't know how efficient it will be.

"PONY" done with prismacolors on Heritage Cardstock.
Don't ask me why, but he looks better in the Gallery section.

The drawings for the challenge this week are all so great! Congratulations to all of you!
I won't be here again this week since I'm heading out to move my son but I have hopes that I might get something done while we are driving there and back (5 hrs. one way). So, maybe I will have something to post when I get home. I sure hope so - I really miss drawing everyday and school will be starting up again shortly.

Pony looks good Ron!

Mumwond, what a beautiful study in concentration !

For your info - I bought a battery operated sharpener from Artifolk, I wanted an electric eraser & we don't have them here and when I saw the batt sharpener I thought I may as well get that too as our big electric ones seem to be ridiculously expensive when compared with overseas - must have a luxury tax or something! Anyway it works really well - I don't have that lapse of concentration when I am drawing - just reach out and it sharpens! It is a little light though so I have it on a non slip mat to keep it in place when sharpening. Also it can be used on mains power with a transformer.

mumwond
Hi Bigs, Thanks for info. on sharpener. Mine's not here yet - I just ordered it from someone on eBay. Sounds as if it might be useful - it would be handy if it could be used from mains as I'm not good at remembering to buy batteries. Norma
Glad you liked the drawing!
bigs
No problem Norma - I just have to get a transformer (of course the one I have is the wrong voltage!) .

Did a quickie of the pony - who can resist that mane! 20 mins:

Nice job on the pony Norma!

Actually there was a little palomino miniature horse, with a head not unlike this one, escaped from her yard today when I was on my way to the hairdresser - I was late because it took 20 mins to catch the little @#%$ so that she wouldn't get hit by a car. There were another 2 girls stopped in their car and we all tried to block this little horse (with a giant attitude) from getting back on the road - finally some nice folk popped her in their spare stable until the owner could be contacted - she had name tag, like a dog, with her owners ph no. her name was "Goldie" - with that tag I'd say she is a regular escape artist!
siksnosparnyte
Great pony, mumwond! smile.gif

What I can say, Bigs! Everyone can be an artist laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

When my kids were little, we always had ponies, after a while you learn there is nothing like a bolt to keep a pen locked. But remember- they got all day to study that thing. Well you did your good deed for the animal world.

Audrius, what a great witch!! I can almost feel the straw of her hair and the softness of the felted hat!

Ron, I agree - with some animals you can almost see the cogs turning while they are thinking! I had a part arab mare and she would paw a section under a 5 strand wire fence then lie on her side and sort of shimmy sideways to get out to do down the road to the rose farm - yup those were sweet roses! And she was one big headache to try & contain I can tell you!!
bigs
Oops! Nearly missed yours John - we cross posted - nice job - that little horse is getting a real workout here !!
siksnosparnyte
Thanks, Elena and Bigs smile.gif

Your horse is great John! Although I think it's head is a little too narrow... Anyway. I really like your drawing smile.gif

Bigs - The head is not too narrow..it's a different horse laugh.gif

There once was a man with a horse
..which he fully intended to ride
but when he drew it, it got a big head
..and threw him off and he died

I love your little boy, Kim -- you really captured his concentration!
siksnosparnyte
Great drawing, Kim smile.gif Thanks for taking part in my challenge.
bigs
Great job Kim - you'll have to start a sketch journal with your ink & col pencils. That boy just oozes concentration!

Have you seen Katherine Tyrrel's Blog? She mainly uses coloured pencils & I am jealous of the size of her collection of pencils. Lots of habdy hints too.
