Full Version: Weekly Drawing Challenge Aug 3 to Aug 9
Drawspace > General > General discussion

Hello!

I will be your host for this week, and I hope you like my choice of photos.

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Like the previous week, I'm offering different photo's from the Renassance fair.

This guy has character
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentI thought the owl by itself would be a worthwhile draw.
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentHe seems to have a rugged face. How long at sea is the question?
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachmentI know I like to draw faires.
Click to view attachmentClick to view attachment The roses in the beard seemed like an interesting touch of character too.

Enjoy! I can't wait to see what everyone will share.

Yes! If only the owl could talk? The expression does remind me of an attitude that is very similar to my cat!

Great photos, Gilbert!

I try to go to the Renaissance faire every year. I have many more pictures. I try to look for the odd or the unusual.

Gilbert

Thank you on your comment about the photos.

There is a lesson on Caricature since you are interested in this type of drawing.

Although I've seen a few painters, the rule is pretty broad as far as I'm concerned for your drawing. A qoute from the challenge "Confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: use gaphite pencil, pen, ink, or charcoal". If you want to paint, I'm sure everyone here would like to see the colors you choose.

There are differernt levels of expertise, so don't be afraid to post your drawing. Hey this is art. Everyone has their own unique style.

Regards,
Gilbert

It is Scarborough Renaissance Festeval in Waxahachie, TX. Oh yes! The possibilites are endless. I have another one that I wasn't sure to post or not. It was a knight pushing a modern day stroller with a little pony head on the front. I'm adding to share. I hope you like!

This was a real challenge, but the incongruity of the knight in armour with the modern child's buggy reall appealed to me. I use HB and 4B graphite on cartridge paper. huh.gif

This is awesome! When I took the picture, they really looked the part, but the 20th century, but with a lot of character.

Thought I would try the owl, think I thinned him down a bit and stretched him, but enjoyed drawing him.

Here's my version of the lady with the owl. I used 2B, 3B and 5B graphite on copy paper. It took about 2 hours. Hope you like them!

Great pirate< Kay. Really nice detail as usual.
Everyone is doing lovely work.

Here's my attempt at the owl. It's my first attempt at using charcoal
with colored pencil added. It wasn't as messy as I thought but I need
much more work with charcoal before I feel comfortable with it. Also,
as you can tell I need more practice with the colored pencils.
khinchowin888
Tommy ... Practice...practice ...and your drawing is better and better and sometime you will be amazing yourself, the main thing is keep on drawing. Love your owl.
