I have noticed that some folks here can really crank out the art work, while others take a while longer. I myself tend to take my time. I dont do much sketching, but when i do, i usually do 2-4 sketches than am done for a few months. Do yall just do something when ya feel like it? or do ya feel once ya start, you have to finish soon?
just wondering

hmm...lets see..first i think style has something to do with it..,for instance, some people who do realism work will work on a drawing for 60 hours or better..some lots more
sketch artist tend to just capture the "feel" or attitude of the subject, a sketch can take a min or two or a hour or two..depending on what they are doing
the medium also has a small something to do with it...oil willl take forever, charcoal is quick, etc
i personally rarely spend much more than 3-5 hours on any given drawing, except when working in colored pencil...that tends to take me longer..i am just learning..
but dont worry bout the time it takes to do a drawing, just draw till you have what you want,,that may take 15 to 20 mins to over 20 hours...who knows..only the one pushing the pencil so to speak
regards
Kay
ps...if you want to really be good at drawing you will do it every day.....

I would say it depends on the availability of given time.
If I have a lot of free time, I might spend it on a long drawing.
If I am doing a portrait for someone, like I am right now, I make that extra time to draw.
If I have only a short time I might spend it doing some faster, sketchy type drawings simply to keep myself in the "groove" - ha!
Now, though, school will be starting so I will be drawing much less in my free time - you know - those necessities like cooking, cleaning, and sleep will take up most of my extra time.
But I do hope to continue going to the figure drawing sessions so maybe I will have to start posting some of those.

I tend to post work that either (1) took me a long time to do, or (2) took a short time, but for some reason is special, unusual, or interesting. That leaves out a lot of quick sketches that I do which I choose not to share. For example, I took my daughter to a class on Sunday, sat in the back, and drew half a dozen sketches of the people in the room during the hour class. Normally I won't post things like that here.

I hardly ever think about how long a drawing will take. I just spend what ever time I feel the subject needs. I usually don't even think about the time unless i use a timer. If it has lots of fine detail I will take sometimes 5 or 6 hours on a pencil portrait, but normally about 2 or 3 on most of the portraits in my gallery.

I am learning to draw, so I have tried to practice, practice, practice, according to the mantra of the best artists on this site. It varies how long it takes me to complete a drawing, if I am doing one for the weekly challenge, I can put several hours in it, refining it. My sketches, usually are "not ready for prime time"

, they are just quickie ideas, not at all realistic, sort of a doodle/sketch. I am making a conscious effort to draw, sketch or read a book about art techniques every day.

I also ..just draw ...when I start a drawing I dont rush it ....I am more pleased with my work when I take the time .. also I will set it aside for a day maybe two or three then go back to it .. surprisingly many things look unfinished so I work some more on them .

I wish I had more time to spend on art. . . but my life is so full with work and school and the house and the family that all I can do is fit it in as I can. Thus sometimes, a work that really only has five hours invested may take me a week to complete because I very rarely have five hours at one sitting to work on it.
But I think that one shouldn't hurry art. . . in fact, when I try to hurry, the results are never as good as if I take my time.

Hi Pintail,i draw every day,but lately it has been once a week or every two weeks.Work pressures are a bit demanding at the moment,as i am on contract in another country.Take your time, but to improve you really need to draw as much as possible. When i was at home i sometimes completed two drawings a night.
It requires discipline to improve, very much like anything else in life.
your drawing of the fox was really great, keep it up. regards Wayneo.

Wayneo-thanks for the kind words.
as for doing any more sketches, i may be able to get 1 more in this year. As soon as hunting season starts im running non-stop 18-20hrs a day for about 100 days. Not to mention i will be starting to back to school in little over a week (first semester of Grad school). Ive got an idea of a sketch, but i am not sure im up for that kinda challenge just now. I have lost all my motivation for the time being.
thanks

Well, there are just too many factors in this to consider.
Well, of course, theres technique, style, and medium but I think the big factor is why people are drawing. Some people are starting out here as beginners, and mainly going from the lessons which means they can go through them quickly or slowly. For some people, drawing is a small hobby and can only get a drawing out once a month or so. And to some, drawing and art is their life and it doesn't matter how long the drawing will take, there will still be dozens of sketches, drawing, and paintings from all of their experiences to be uploaded here.
And some people like me have some stuff that is just simply not uploaded yet.

With the portraits I seem to get most of it done in the first day but then I have to leave it alone and only come back to it when I see some little thing here or there that it needs. That is often a week or more. I have a hard time committing to it being finished. And a lot of other drawings I have done I just haven't uploaded yet.

Im one that takes awhile, and some of the reason for that is just time.. Im working full time as well as going to school. I havent been on here in quite sometime now and still have no new "pencil" work to show. I tend to do more of my drawing over the winter anyway when theres not much else to do... at least thats my excuse! hahaha
