Tam1426
Welcome to Snoopy 101 Shrek cartoon challenge. My name is Tammy, your host for the next two weeks. I am so pleased that Brian has asked me host this cartoon challenge, thank you Brian.

Shrek (Ogre): a big ugly green beast who finds true love.

After a bit of research I learned some interesting things about the Shrek character.

Shrek is based on William Steig’s 1990 fairy tale picture book.

William Steig (1907-2003) was a prolific American cartoonist, sculptor, and author of popular children’s literature. Born in 1907 in the Bronx in New York City to Polish-Jewish immigrants from Austria. His father was a house painter and his mother a seamstress who encouraged his artistic learnings. His brother Irwin was a journalist and painter, his brother Henry was a writer, painter and saxophone player, his brother Arthur was a writer and poet. As a child William experimented in painting, was an avid reader, and was fascinated by Pinocchio.

William Steig graduated high school at fifteen but did not complete college; although he attended three of them. He spent two years at City College of New York, three years at the National Academy of Design, and five days at the Yale School of Fine Arts. He dropped out of each one of these schools.

When his family became caught in financial problems during the Great Depression, he began drawing cartoons as a freelance artist and sold his first cartoon to the New Yorker in 1930. He soon became quite successful and over the coming decades he would publish over 1600 cartoons in the magazine, including 117 of its covers.

In 1968 William Steig wrote his first children’s book, and in 1990 the picture book Shrek! This formed the basis for the Dreamworks Animation film in 2001.

We find the Shrek films not only appealing for our children, but for parents as well. I chose this theme because of the multitude of characters available to be drawn. Everyone in our family has their favorite character and I look forward to seeing what favorites the Drawspace members have.

The Challenge:
Simply draw one of the reference pictures I have provided or if you wish you may use your own reference. And for those who would like to test their creative side, please create your very own Ogre. You may use your computer for text or coloring, but please post your original drawing first. Please no computer graphics, all images must be hand drawn.

See you all at the swamp!

Tam1426
Thank you Brian, Seneka, and Clara. I am pretty excited to see what everyone does.
Shrek is one of our favorite movies and of course we had to watch Shrek, Shrek 2, and Shrek the Third to prepare for this laugh.gif
Off to sharpen my green pencils!
Brian David Dekter
I have been ill with some kind of stomach flu... so I had some time to draw today....this is my first attempt at drawing Shrek and Donkey and found this very challenging....I used several erasers on my rough copy.... smile.gif

thanks for the challenge Tammy!!!
Tam1426
I hope you feel better Brian...but selfishly glad that you had time to draw today. smile.gif
Your drawing is awesome, you totally captured Donkey.
I know what you mean about challenging though, I am struggling with Shrek like crazy.
In keeping with what appears to have become my theme for your challenges, I attempted Fiona and Shrek roasting rats over the campfire.

Thanks Tammy!!! .....Shrek characters I find are not easy to draw... I think maybe because they are very 3D like....but what a fun way to learn and challenge our skills....

so I have all ready lost my appetite

and now you have Shrek roasting rats on a open fire.. laugh.gif ....I have been living on Banana' s and clear chicken broth soup......actually Tammy you put a big smile on my face ...very sweet drawing and funny expression on Shreks face.
Kaly

Clara your Shrek is great. Thank you for taking the time to join in.
NorthernWolf37
hi again, this is getting addictive lol

well i had a day off from work so i thought i'd give ol shreky a shot, when i try and print the picture to draw from i lose some of the detail i guess from my lousy printer so i just sketch what i see instead of sitting in front of the computer but i gave it my best and i enjoyed it wink.gif
Tam1426
Thanks for coming to the swamp NorthernWolf37 - your Shrek turned out very nicely.
It must be very hard drawing from your monitor. My printer isn't the greatest either and usually I lose the colors.

Thanks Siksno and Clara wub.gif I am feeling better but worried about Cyn because I have not seen or heard from her in days and I have sent her 2 e-mails...... I know she was in a bad car accident... sad.gif

Tam , Norhtern wolf, Clara, and Mr. Ofir really great drawings!!!

great challenge Tam smile.gif
HayTay
Great drawings, everyone!

Thank you, Tammy, for the Shrek history lesson. I guess you don't really think about where the characters in movies and cartoons originate and I found the background information very enlightening.

Tammy had some kind words for my first ever portrait and I mentioned that if I found some time I'd try to draw something to post in her Shrek Challenge. After spending more hours than I should have over the last two days I wound up with something worth submitting. The finished drawing got a 'WOW' from my family, but, then, they're a bit biased in my favor. wink.gif

Have "A weed rat, cooked rotisserie style!" to celebrate,
HayTay

Tam1426
Good to hear that you are feeling better Brian.
Tam1426
OMG HayTay! Where does one start?
Your family was not biased whatsoever.
I guess the best place to start is the top, the eyebrows are great, the way you were able to capture his puffy 3D nose, his mouth and especially his teeth. But my most favorite is how you did his hand and fingernails. Thank you so much for your submisson, it is very much appreciated.
And his vest...wow.
Thank you, thank you.

Tam1426
Oh no...not my gumdrop buttons!

This looks slightly better in real life than the photo, but not much. Struggled with color choice and blending on this drawing...but still learning, and practice, practice, practice.

Your welcome, Tammy, and thanks for the heaps of praise!

At your urging I started posting my completed drawings in the Gallery section. For everyone's viewing pleasure, I posted a full size scan of my version of Shrek there along with the rest of my meager collection, so far. Enjoy! Comments and constructive criticism is always appreciated and more than welcome.

I'm still looking for everyone else to post a little something so we can fill up this thread and help Tammy out.

C'mon all, let's make those pencils dance,
HayTay
Brian David Dekter
Thanks Tammy....that is a very sweet drawing you did.

Hi HayTay great to see you join in the challenges......wow... your drawing is fantastic!!!

really great challenge Tam... I have been very busy but hope to try another.

Happy drawings, Brian.

glad you are feeling better. take care
Freja
Hello everyone!
I saw this challenge and I did a try on it.
This is Fiona from Shrek, did with watercolor and normal color pencils. I like her when she shows her fight side! biggrin.gif
It may s little too bright, but I hope it is ok.

It's also awesome entries from you guys. I like them all! happy.gif

Tam1426
Freja this is just lovely.
Fiona's crown and eyes really stand out.
Thank you for participating.
(I like Fiona when she is doing battle as well smile.gif )

Tammy,
I promised you that i would join the swamp so here goes. This is my first ever challenge, so i hope you enjoy blush.gif. I am putting on my basic outline sketch at this point as i am too frightened i destroy it by trying the shading and so on. I will attempt some shading over the next few days and i will post the finished result then.
C what you think, by the way well done to all other members, the drawings are great, what a challenge. I love the animation sketches rather than real life and that's why i went for this one for my first attempt.

Thanks for the challenge Tammy.

Tam1426
Oh Wow! This is just a brilliant drawing. Your Dragon is outstanding, the attention to detail, and her expression. And I think that Shrek had kind of a contented look on his face. I like it just how it is but can't wait to see it after the shading.

I don't think you need to worry about wrecking it with shading you have such a great beginning, but I do sympathize. I once did a Dory and Nemo drawing and had a pretty nice sketch...then got the not so brilliant idea of trying out my oil pastels for the first time. Who knew those were pretty much impossible to work with? I then proceeded to completely ruin my drawing.

Thank you so much for coming to the swamp, and I'm pleased that the Shrek challenge was your first one.

Wow some fantastic drawings Freja, Provmeister, and welcome to the challenges.

Love your swamp Tammy and your picnic at the beach, fantastic . smile.gif
Turrialba
Hi,

I didn’t want to miss this challenge. I made the Shrek face. 3D characters are very good practice and it is pretty similar to make face portraits. It was about 4.5 hours using HB, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils. It was about 2 hours to capture face expression, 2 hours shading and about 20 minutes drawing his cloth. I enjoyed making it.
Tam1426
I too am very happy that you did not miss this challenge.
Excellent work Turrialba. You are just bang on with the likeness, shading is excellent.
His mouth, nose, and cheeks are brilliantly done.
Thank you for joining, look forward to seeing more of your work.

thank you for the comments and the welcome. I loved this challenge for my first one and i really liked your drawings too. I know what you mean about the erasers, i'm going to have to buy some more after this one.

Here's to the next challenge!!!

Tammy

thank you for the kind words and the encouragement, they are most appreciated. Really enjoyed this challenge, here's looking to the next one!!

Thought your drawings were great, especially the swamp, well done. I will attempt some shading over the weekend, so might post the results then.

Thanks for the challenge and comments again.

HayTay
Freja - Welcome to DrawSpace! I like what you've done with Fiona. As I mentioned to Tammy, I'm really going to have to give colored pencils a try. My daughter has a tub of cheapo colored pencils somewhere that I'll have to ask to borrow (even though I paid for them!).

provmeister - You're off to a great start. If you're worried about being ' too frightened i destroy it by trying the shading' you might want to make a few lightened copies of the sketch and start by shading one of those. If you really botch it you can just grab another copy and start again. It'll be great practice either way.

Turrialba - I really like your drawing. It reminds me of another drawing I've seen recently. wink.gif Keep up the good work. I'll be watching for some more drawings from you.

Tam1426 - My, my, you are putting us all to shame with all of your wonderful drawings. I started another one for this thread but haven't had much time to work on it with everything else going on. I'm not even going to try to keep up! Keep 'em coming. I popped by to browse through your many gallery pages and I keep finding drawings I've previously missed. I am impressed.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this,
HayTay

HayTay

Thank you for the comments and i appreciate the advice. Believe it or not i actually made a few copies at work yesterday with this very thought in mind, so i will try some different variations of shading over the weekend. I thought your drawing was fantastic, the detail was amazing - well done and thanks again.

Hi Tammy
Its me again with my attempts at shading. blink.gif
I tried to keep it simple with nothing but squirkling with different forms of pencil. Personally i prefer the Dragon, i am not very happy about Shrek, couldn't quite get his face right with the shading and gave up after going through my second eraser. laugh.gif I might try my hand at some colour pencils to see the difference, so i am sorry it's the same sketch time and time again but practice makes perfect.
I think i will need to study the squirkling and crosshatching lessons some more, hope you enjoy!!!

Well what can i say - i am well and truly" swamped" now. I have enjoyed this challenge immensely and have spent a lot of time doing it, much to the dismay of my family. Well done to all who entered with some quite fabulous pieces and i can now leave this challenge with some asperations for the future in what i can still achieve.

Tammy - thank you finally for a super challenge, i have enjoyed it very much and i leave my final sketch for you to peruse, which is in colour and my attempt at crosshatching. tongue.gif

Kaly - Thank you for your vote of confidence, sometimes you look at something for so long you just can't see it but others can. By the way your sketch is fab! Poor ginger, he always ends up on the baking tray!!! laugh.gif

Anyway, time to go for just now and who knows i might just drop by for another challenge pretty soon.

Oh My Clara! This is wonderful.
I tried to do this drawing and gave up part way through.
Lord Farquard is one of my faves. Your gingerbread head lifting up off the cookie sheet is just great.
Thank you for your second contribution to the challenge.
Tam1426
Thank you all for the compliments.

HayTay I am looking forward to what you are working on.

So well done, and again I just love your dragon.
