I'm Nancy B and I'm your challenge host for the week. I hope you will find something that will grab your fancy and you will want to stop and relax and pick up your pencils.
All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!
The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch thatâ??s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, thatâ??s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.
You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.
Reminder:
This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.
There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.
If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.
This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.
I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.
I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.
If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Wow its so nice to see all the great artist have been at work, I had hoped someone would like to try this picture of my granddaughter ,you have done a nice likeness of her 13th Element, I think shes a keeper for both of us, can't wait to show her. I look forward to seeing your version Elena, hope you are enjoying your travels even though I am envious. Brian I know you think you are just a cartoon artist but I think you do more than justice on the "regular" stuff to, we all need a little woodstock and Snoopy in our lives though, thanks for dropping in here, waiting to see if Snoopy will show up before the end of the week with the pup.

Is there a higher resolution available for the bottles image? I'd like to try a more detailed drawing of one of them.

Here's my attempt at the girl with the hat. I used B and 4B graphite with charcoal pencil for her hair. I gave a slight hint of colour to her skin with a cotton bud rubbed on a soft pastel. It was done on cartridge paper and measures 8 x 8 ins.

Hello all you challenge fans,
Thanks for hosting Nancy. I did this one of your adorable Grand Daughter. I remember in another post when our member "Exactly" said that doing tight curly hair was tough. Guess what? She is right.
Nice work from everyone so far. I hope that we will see more as the week goes on.
Smooth bright white 160 gsm printer paper. (Got a little blotchy on me with this one because I didn't do enough hatching and cheated with a stump.

Oh I am having to much fun here this week. The most difficult part of hosting is trying to decide what people might want to draw. You do want to challenge them because thats how we all get better is with practice. No one wants to draw something that doesn't inspire them or catch them in some way though. Then you have to try to take a decent picture. Then you have to upload them which is easier for some of you than me. However it is so exciting and rewarding to come here and see the works of art people come up with, just inspiring them is so much fun. Us old ladies need all the fun we can get. I think you all have done an excellant job of drawing my Granddaughter. RJ one of the reasons I picked that pic was the hair and the hands and the detailing of the hat . You will notice I have never tried her. Michlagniolo I will try to get a better pic of the bottles for you but I am having problems with my Picassa so we need to get my daughter to help with that, will try to do it soon. LilAnn you have done a great job on the dog, you have caught all his mischievousness (sp.?) hope you will try some other ones, I look forward to it.

If you copy the picture, then paste it on to a Word document, you can enlarge it to landscape A4, if that's any use to you! The resolution is still quite good.

If it's difficult to do then don't worry. This week is turning out to be pretty busy for me so I did a quick drawing on the train ride into work today. I hope to post it later today. It was a good challenge and i definitely needed the exercise. Thanks!

Here it is. I did the drawing in a pocket sized sketchbook on a bumpy train ride this morning, so not my finest work. I must have liked the striped globe on the left bottle because I ended up making it way bigger than it should be. It was a lot of fun and a good exercise. All and all, a great way to start a day.

Hi,
Here is my dog drawing. Its proportions are bad and face expression is not the same, but I don’t have time to correct it. Although, it was a very good challenge and I enjoy it very much!

Slim, I like how you gave "Bogart" his blood shot eyes and the softness to his fur, the touch of pink in his nose and toes give him the young pup look. How cute Turrialba, I love how you got the expression and detailing, you pushed the darks which is good and made him look wrinkly and furry.
Everyone is picking up this puppys personality. My friend calls him her Granddog , I showed her the pictures today and she flipped over the great job you are doing.

Hi everyone! It's Nancy's daughter while she's taking a nap. My daughter is the one my mom posted a pic of and momma was right when she said she would flip to see everyone's pictures of her. You have all done a great job! Makes me wish I had inherited the artistic talent. I'm creative, but not artsy. Even the quick sketches picked up the personality of my daughter and momma's friend's granddog. My mom has been telling me all week what you all have been posting pictures of and describing them for me. This is my first chance to come over and see it for myself. I look forward to seeing anymore you post

Nice drawing of the horse Northernwolf37, I took that one on the spur of the moment , He was close to the fence when I pulled over, he walked up and posed for me. You did a good job on him. Kaly I was about to give up on the car... I really thought maybe RJ would do that one cause he likes all the detailing but he surprised me with a nice portrait and you tackled the lines and shadows of the car, that grill had to be hard but you really done a nice job on it, I know all those lines are difficult, it was an old ambulance for a small country town and has very few miles on it.

Thats just fine 1_8 I have a hard time with time on everything in my life. Your horse is really pretty and if that is your first attempt at drawing fur, wow. I worked on another picture of this dog and then decided to work on Brenda's lesson on fur. However I think you are still ahead of me, you captured his wrinkles as well. Thanks everyone for joining in this weeks challenge, it is fun to see everyones takes on the pictures and so glad you took on the challenge.
