Hello all
I'm your challenge host for the week. I hope you like the photos
All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!
The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.
You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.
Reminder:
This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.
There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.
If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.
This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.
I have offered 5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.
I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.
If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Hi, me again... Gave a try at the rooster. I battled with the challenge this week. I really have issues when it comes to drawing something other than faces. sigh

Nice photos Rafael
13thElement nice job on the rooster.
I also gave a quick try at the rooster and the leaf with water drops, water drops are my stone in the shoe

I find them very hard to do.

Kaly, nice drawings. in drawing the rooster I like your work in feathers, for drawing water drops, the secret is the high contrast. dark zone beside the light zone. with this combination you obtain the shiny texture.
Rafael
The rooster is really popular this time so I tried it too. All of the pictures are wonderful. So are the roosters. You girls did a wonderful job. And Clara, I love the water drops. I'm not brave enough for that.
I just grabbed the darkest pencils I could find and a makeup sponge to smear the background and here is my 10 minute rooster.

Cyn, you make me feel like a piker! 10 minutes is all it took you? (sigh) I guess it is back to the drawing board for me, LOL.

Since it is a drawing
challenge you really rose to it! I admire the fact that you picked a picture that was hard for you. I also like the job you did on the rooster.
Thank you Rafael. It's good to be trying again. I love all your photos..
pmowen, your not a piker

I have just discovered that sometimes if I don't get lost in the detail and I just "get it on paper fast", it works. On the other hand, sometimes it's a complete disaster.

Anyway the face of the rooster needs a lot of work. In fact when I look at it close, it's like a hiary alien.

Cyn,
rofl ALF, comes to mind. I have to learn to get loose and do a quick sketch. Who would think getting loose would require training?
Trish/pmowen
Trish, you are right. ALF.. Ha Ha Ha There is a new lesson on Speed Drawing by Wayne and I am going to try it. I love his work and I like faster drawing sometimes, so maybe all my stuff wont look like ALF.

Hi,
This is my attempt for the rooster. I'm not happy at all with the background but I'm satisfied with feathers and rooster face. It was more than 10 minutes (about 3 hours) using HB, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils. I also used a mechanical pencil for face details (with 2B graphite leads).
BTW, great pictures Rafael!

Very cool! I don't know what fault you find in the background? Stop being so hard on yourself!

Well I guess that leaves me to draw the chicken, the way I remember it on the farm I grew up on is there were a lot more chickens than roosters. Shows how the world has changed .....I tried to make my chick just as proud as that rooster.
