Full Version: The face of Halloween

With Halloween fast approaching in North America (and other parts of the world) , I thought it might be fun to see how its represented in your art.

This thread can be used to put your drawings or paintings of your depiction of Halloween, whether its bats, pumpkins, witches or other scary things of the night. Let's see 'em!

Here's a little piece that I did in coloured pencil on black paper. The image isn't very good as the light was fading and photographing black paper is tricky. This looks a lot better in person, believe me. A better one soon!

I was doodling the other night, it started out as trying to draw eyes, then developed into a face, then with my doodle bug still not satisfied it turned into this guy. I figure he probably fits a Halloween thread.tongue.gif He's a bit lopsided, but was fun to play with.

I used to be a big Friday the 13th fan when I was young. I also recognize were you got the vampire image from. It's from the indie film The Addiction. I really want to see that film. I have it saved on my queue over at Netflix but the movie is still unavailable.

In Vietnam, we don't know Halloween. Halloween was imported in France only in about year 2000, with some success, but only for 4-5 years. Then it was criticized as a commercial operation, and not continued. Must we draw only a woman face ?

NVA,
Back in the old days, people believed that for one night in the year, the spirits of the dead could walk the earth again. This night was known as All Hallow's Eve (Halloween). People who feared these ghosts would take a pumpkin, hollow out the inside of it, and carve a scary face into, then set it outside their home to keep away the bad spirits. Witches are often associated with Halloween because this night had something to do with the paganist religion, and paganists were labeled as "witches" by other religions, and black cats were their familiars. No more on that, as we're not supposed to discuss religions on DS.

Nowdays, most people don't know or care what Halloween is really about, or where it came from. For the kids, it means dressing up scary and walking around the neighborhood getting lots of free candy from strangers and scaring each other. Common images that are associated with Halloween are: jack-o-lanterns, witches, black cats, ghosts, vampires, mummies, zombies, spiderwebs, tombstones, skeletons, anything to do with scary dead stuff. The food most common to Halloween seems to be apples. An old traditional game was "bobbing for apples", where apples were put into a tub of water, and people took turns trying to catch one in their teeth, no hands allowed. We have apples that are covered with caramel or a candy coating, and stuck onto a stick for easier eating. Hmm well that's all I can think of right now, hope this gave you a better understanding of what Halloween is all about. It's just good scary fun!

Thank you very much Mindy! Now I understand the drawings on Halloween. May be someday I'll tell some old stories and old believes in Vietnam, with traditional drawings, paintings and sculptures.

Thanks. I personally find her to be very sexy but than again, I'm strange. laugh.gif

I agree too. It did after the first two films, just become another slasher series.
But I do like most of the sequels.
And I really liked Rob Zombies Halloween. I loved how he put Michaels childhood in there. And I thought he did a pretty good job. However, I do like the original better.

I drew this recently.

I also plan to do a Halloween Parody drawing - speaking of Michael Myers movies.. lolol

*Lavender Laverne Halloween*

Those flashes of light in background are like she's a star..lol then all the weirdness flowing from it lol lol ..

paulette4
That's great!
How did you colour it?
up5
With color pencil of course. smile.gif
paulette4
Cool technique, it almost looks spray painted.
up5
Interesting observation - I change up my technique & strategy to each drawing I do to adapt to its theme.

Perhaps you can look at all my art and you may find other pieces I've done that you might like - my homepage is on my profile.

Thanks. smile.gif
