Thank you Kay. In fact you can tell a lot about people(men and women) by seeing their shoes, not only the condition but also and mostl important the taste and the choice of their shoes. When shoes were mostly of leather(in my 20s,30s) i just loved buying the best quality because they last longer.Romania had a tradition of making quality shoes and still today the famous Swiss shoewmaker Bally manufactures their shoes in Romania. Cheap labor costs. They even had a shop in the old communist days with shoes refused by Bally and from there i used to shop for elegant shoes. The Romanian factory and trade mark was called Guban and they made the best leather shoes in Cluj Napoca with special shops in Bucharest. Where are those days? I so much miss Romanian shoes and textiles .
Here are my sandals bought in Marseille in 2001. They still look good because i don't wear them much. Another secret for the long life of shoes is to have many pairs and rotate them.
1/2 hours, charcoal on sketch pad, 9x11 in, from real life.
BTW, I just love my new charcoal pencils.

ELENA: A master piece, you draw so superbly, I'm troubled!
To continue your comment, Elena :
If any of you goes to Paris or to big towns, be careful with shoes. When someone in the metro or bus looks around and observe discretely the shoes of other people, this is a sign. The pickpockets believe that good and expensive shoes means a lot of money in your pocket!
ElenaM

Thank you, Elena! In fact these 2 last pairs have been drawn after I joined the Drawing Space. I think I draw now much more carefully than before.
In Europe, there is since one year or two, a movement to praise works on paper, that were, up to recently, considered as minor art.

Clara prezada, I put only what i don't wear and from those only some. You ain't see my shoe rack

it's a bazaar of all kinds of shoes; the msot beautiful I had to throw away they were Italian and if you know how Italians are they make
belle cose but don't last long: so I wore them in the wrong place in Athens going up to the Acropolis and came down with holes in my Roman sandals. The cobbler says "buy another pair, it will cost you less than I would charge for the repair". So they went to the trash bin, of course. It was a sad day as i love Italian footwear. So what i have left Italian leather is my hand bag. maybe we can open another topic on hand bags

I believe they are cool to draw too.

Hi, ladies, I have prepared some cups of tea, do you like Chinese green tea, very good for health ?
By the way, what you think about a challenge on teaset ? Not only we have to draw pot and cups, there is also a problem of composition. In fact, we have to draw a still-life on the theme of teaset ! This will take a lot of time, however !
Elena: Your “On the beach” is so lovely!
Lovemyboobug: Welcome! Tender and beautiful drawing ! You should however give us a bigger picture, a size of about 500 pixels in each dim would be fine! Regards,

Hi An,
I have been lurking watching all of the lovely shoe drawings, but when you said "tea" I definitely perked my ears up! I love tea, never drink anything but tea, and especially love Chinese green teas and oolongs. For breakfast I drink black tea, but I drink tea all day long.
As for the challenge, I have several teapots, and several tea cups, not tea sets per se. This sounds like a challenge I could sink my teeth into. I am eagerly awaiting the drawings posted of teasets.

Acrylic paints on panel board (cheaper than canvas

)
ElenaM
Oct 8 2008, 08:29 PM
OK.I know about panels I have some myself for oil pastels and yesterday I bought some canvas paper.
Now if you want C&C I can say that the painting can be considered from two points of view, illustration and fine art. If is illustration then it's fine the way it is. But if is meant to be fine art you need stronger definition of light and shade. I don't know of course your reference picture or if it is from real life.anyway for painting you need light and shade.I hope you don't mind me saying this and maybe can serve you in the future as an element to take into account. But my guess is that is excellent on a wall in a nursery(baby's room). practically all my oil pastels that i worked since April are for children's rooms or dining rooms. And I guess is a good beginning. One cannot expect after a few months to be able to create gallery pieces.
Tam1426
Oct 8 2008, 08:46 PM
Well I'm not sure if I am going to bin it or gift it....
I appreciate your comments...where would I put in more shade?
I struggled with how dark to make the shadows under the shoes and around the blocks.
I really don't know what I am doing with these paints.
I used shoes and blocks that I had from when my kids were babies for reference.
ElenaM
Oct 8 2008, 09:09 PM
tammy I don't know how you did it. Usually painters who use a model have them sitted at the same hour in the same place for the same light if is done from real life. So You must have had some light source at the time of the initial arrangement of blocks and shoes. That light source reflects on the objects in "waves" of color. So to represent voulme both in shoes and blocks you create that shape with different intensities of the colors. So you observe from the real life objects in your case how colors fade or increase in intensity on the object with the reflection of light.
I hope I made myself clear.
That's why people usually draw from reference because they have a constant image in which light and shadow are present in the same spot. You don't invent it, you just observe it and render in paint. First you do a sketch of your painting and capture these elements. Then proceed to paint. But I don't know how you did it.
Tam1426
Oct 8 2008, 09:22 PM
Sorry if I was not clear Elena.
I used items that I had and took a photo then printed it then sketched and painted from that reference.
I now understand what you mean, and from the reference I do have more light and shadow - I just don't know how to create it with the medium I am using. Do you know what I mean?
Thanks for your time Elena.
