Tam1426
Welcome to Snoopy 101 Flintstones cartoon challenge. My name is Tammy, your host for the next two weeks. Brian has asked me to host for a second time, thank you Brian.

"Flintstones, meet the Flintstones, they're the modern stone-age family"
"From the town of Bedrock, they're a page right out of history"
"Let's ride with the family down the street, through the courtesy of Fred's two feet"
"When you're with the Flintstones, have a yabba dabba doo time, a dabba doo time"
"You'll have a gay old time!"

Now that you have that song stuck in your head biggrin.gif, a bit of research on The Flintstones.

The Flintstones is about a working class Stone Age man's life with his family and his next door neighbour and best friend.

“The Flintstones” was a Hanna-Barbera Production that originally aired on ABC-TV in prime time from 1960 - 1966. It was network television’s first animated series to which there were 166 original episodes.

The original name of the series was “The Flagstones”. When it was realized that the “Hi and Lois” characters surname was Flagstone, the name was changed. The name “Gladstones” was considered prior to the final change to “The Flintstones”.

The show is set in the town of Bedrock in the Stone Age era. The show is an allegory to American society of the mid-20th century; in the Flintstones' fantasy version of the past, dinosaurs, sabre-toothed tigers, woolly mammoths, and other long extinct animals co-exist with barefoot cavemen, who use technology very similar to that of the mid-20th century, although made entirely from pre-industrial materials and largely powered through the use of various animals. The characters drive cars made out of stone or wood and animal skins and powered by foot.

The Flintstones live at 323 Cobblestone Lane in Bedrock.

The Flintstones
Fred Flintstone - The main character of the show.
Wilma Flintstone - (née Pebble, later Slaghoople) - Fred's wife.
Pebbles Flintstone - The Flintstones' infant daughter.
Dino - The Flintstones' pet dinosaur, who barks like a dog.
Baby Puss - The Flintstones' pet sabre toothed cat.
Pearl Slaghoople - Wilma's mother.
Tex Hardrock - Fred's uncle on his mother's side.

The Rubbles
Barney Rubble - Fred's best friend and next door neighbour
Betty Rubble - (née Elizabeth Jean McBricker) - Barney's wife.
Bamm-Bamm Rubble - the Rubbles' abnormally strong adopted son.
Hoppy - The Rubbles' pet Hopparoo (a kangaroo/dinosaur combination creature)

Other characters
Mr. Slate - Fred Flintstone's hot tempered boss at the stone quarry.
Joe Rockhead - a friend of Fred's.
Arnold - the paper boy.
Sam Slagheap - the Grand Poobah of the Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes.
The Great Gazoo - an alien exiled to Earth who helps Fred and Barney, often against their will.
The Gruesomes - the Flintstone's strange next-door neighbours (inspired by the then-popular monster sitcoms The Addams Family and The Munsters)
Zeke Flintstone - Fred's uncle that owned San Cemente, a pun on the California town, San Clemente, that was the site of Richard Nixon's "Western White House."
Uncle Giggles - Fred's eccentric uncle who lived on nightmare hill.

The Flinstones series has been broadcasted in several countries, some of which include: USA, Canada, Mexico, UK, Australia, India, Israel, Middle East, Norway, Germany, Italy, Croatia, and Venezuela.

One source of the show's humour was the ways animals were used for technology. For example, when the characters took photographs with an instant camera, the inside of the camera box would be shown to contain a bird carving the picture on a stone tablet with its bill. In a running gag, the animals powering such technology would, breaking the fourth wall, look directly into the camera at the audience, shrug, and remark, "It's a living," or some similar phrase. Other commonly seen gadgets in the series included:

-a baby woolly mammoth being used as a vacuum cleaner
-an adult woolly mammoth would act as a shower by spraying water with its trunk
-lifts are raised and lowered by ropes around brontosaurs' necks
-"automatic" windows are powered by monkeys that dwell on the outside windowsill
-birds configured as "Ryan Coombes" are activated by pulling on their tails
-an electric razor is depicted as a clam shell housing a honey-bee vibrating it as the edges are rubbed against the character's face.

Although most Flintstones episodes are standalone storylines, the series did have a few story arcs. The most notable example was a series of episodes surrounding the birth of Pebbles. Beginning with the episode "The Surprise", aired midway through the third season, in which Wilma reveals her pregnancy to Fred, the arc continued through the trials and tribulations leading up to Pebbles' birth, and then continued with several episodes showing Fred and Wilma adjusting to the world of parenthood. The Flintstones also became the first primetime animated series to last more than two seasons; this record wasn't surpassed by any other primetime animated tv series until The Simpsons aired their third season in 1992.

The Simpsons has been compared to the Flintstones by many people. Both series were originally aimed at adults, but later found acceptance with children as well. Homer is fat, lazy, a blue-collar worker and prone to crazy get-rich-quick schemes, like Fred. Marge is a devoted housewife and an assertive woman who loves and supports her husband despite his many negative traits, just like Wilma. Ned Flanders is a jolly neighbour who often angers the main character, just like Barney (also Maude is similar to Betty). Maggie is in many ways similar to Pebbles. Homer's relationship with Patty and Selma mirrors Fred's relationship with Mrs. Slaghoople. And sometimes, Flanders shows the same kind of strength Bamm-Bamm usually has. Also, Lisa's necklace is similar to Wilmas.

Before Matt Groening and pals introduced us to "The Simpsons," Joseph Barbera and William Hannah produced a little show called "The Flintstones." Season "1" was first aired on ABC during 1960 and has been syndicated in perpetuity throughout the known universe ever since.

Thank you Brian!
I think almost everyone I know has a favorite Flintstones episode and a childhood memory related to them.
I remember walking home for lunch from school and Flintstones were on from 12 - 12:30 and my Mom actually let me eat my lunch in front of the televison.
Completely and totally love your drawing - that vacuum cracks me up every time.

Hi, Tammy, thanks for hosting. I might find time to calm my frustrations from watercolor and drop by a Dino biggrin.gif , my favorite character.
Tam1426
That would be great Elena, cartoons can be a nice break.
Hope to see Dino soon.
jimm2003
Tammy, You mentioned the connection between The Simpsons and The Flintstones, but even the Flintstones had a model in The Honeymooners. This was a series that contained characters made famous by Jackie Gleason and Art Carney. There is a definite resemblence between Fred and Barney and Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton. This may be a memory of no one younger than I. huh.gif

JIM

My carachature skills lack, but here is an attempt of Gleason and Carney in Bedrock......

Tam1426
Jim - I think your caricature is great.
While doing my research I did find mention of similarities between Honeymooners and Flintstones, and most certainly between the male characters of both series.
Although Honeymooners was a tiny bit before my time....I do have memories of my Dad laughing himself silly watching The Honeymooners.
Thank you for your drawing.
1_8
my draw is not looking good without outline, I will soon submit more drawings with outline done in pen. Hope this will do till then.

Tam1426
Very well done 1_8 - I always enjoy viewing your submissions to all the challenges.
Look forward to seeing more.
Brian David Dekter
Thanks Tammy, funny I did the exact same thing as you, I used to walk home from school with dill pickle chips in my hand and watch the Flintstones at noon on CFTO every day. One of my favorites episodes is with Anne Margaret or I should say Anne Margarock and also the one where Fred has a hit record and sings, they called him Hi-Fi.... laugh.gif

With out a doubt I do remember The Flintstones was a spin off from the Honeymooners and had a definite connection. Jim what a resemblance in your drawing, fantastic!!! What a great show that was. a real classic.

1_8 nice to see you join in again with a wonderful drawing.

Really great start to this challenge Tammy, I hope to find time soon to draw one.

Happy drawings,

Brian.

I remember watching The Flintstones on Friday evening at 8:30. My mom usually did the weekly shopping that night, so I always made sure we would get home in time to watch! LOL Of course I was very, very young--truly!
Tam1426
Brian - We are of the same generation I think, I know the episode you are talking about with Fred singing. I think my favorites are any of the ones that had Gazoo in it. I'm trying to find a good picture to do with him. Can't wait to see what you do with this topic.

Martin - Awesome! You found some time to draw today - lucky you! I must say that I'm sweet on the Fred and Wilma one - I am looking forward to seeing it coloured. Unfortunately I had no time to draw today - fall yard work and clean up day for me. Then I was "forced" to watch Ironman. Hopefully tomorrow I will have some time. Bigs thanks for your participation.

Colleen 1 - Thanks for dropping in. Hope you have some time to draw and post your favorite character.

Kaly, love your drawing and the background. I bought a set of watercolor pencils a while back, but haven't experimented with them much yet. Just wondering, do you dip them in water and then color/paint with them? Or do you color dry and then take a wet paintbrush over it?
Kaly
Hi Mindy,

Thanks

I asked the same question to Kay when I got mine wink.gif
Color with them and then with a wet brush pass over the color, it is great!!!
for small areas I first wet the paper and then color over with the pencil...

you can also use them dry as colored pencils, but I think the fun part is to use them as paint!
Tam1426
Clara - very, very well done.
Wilma's expression is so good.
Watercolor pencils are one of my favorite mediums.
Many thanks for making time to join.
