Full Version: Two new drawings
Drawspace > General > General discussion

Hi gang, here are two new drawings I am doing this weekend. The first one is a drawing of the crown of thorns drawing. Question; Is it all right to draw some one else’s drawing with out there permission? I am not going to sell it or do anything else with it, but not sure about ethics. As you can see it is still under construction and needs a lot more work. The second drawing is a drawing of my dad, who is 89 today. The drawing also needs a lot of work.

Thanks for the help

Hi John,
See Brendas sticky note concerning copyright issues.

Your drawing of your dad is coming nicely. I am uncertain about the mouth area, just doesnt seem to sit correctly. Im sure Jeanette will be able to assist you with this.

Cheers.

The "sticky notes" are at the top of the list of "General discussion" topics. They say they are "pinned".

copy right ... I think if its a drawing and you draw the same drawing .. I dont think that applys .. I think copyright is for pictures taken .. and using the picture they took as your own .. you can draw anything you like .. its your pad and your paper ...now maybe the artist will get ticked about it .. but you can do it .. as I said in the post before just ask hun and if they say no .. then you shouldnt do it .. some may even be flattered you want to . ..most artist prefer to do their own work and ideas ..copyright issues i dont think would apply to this . now if you painted the same drawing and was to seel it or something I dont know about that .. but jeanette would be able to tell you ....whos art do you want to draw ?

Copyright applies to all creative work, photography and drawings or paintings included. Now having said that, there is a theory that if you change an image more than 30% from the original, it is no longer a copy. The whole issue is so open to interpretation that it makes it difficult to provide a solid answer. Technically if you copy another artist's drawing, you are in breach of copyright if you do so without their permission.

As a rule of thumb what has been done in other forums is let the drawing be shown online but not show the reference image without the specific permission of the artist/photographer.

As with all things, it is simpler to use your own photographic references or to draw from life, thus avoiding any conflict if you then end up wanting to sell the drawing. Or where possible, use copyright free images and acknowledge the creator of the original work. Or if using copyrighted material, email the individual and ask permission to use their drawing/photo/whatever as a reference for art.
