Welcome to the third Drawing Challenge. This week Dragonshade was scheduled to host this challenge but I haven't heard from him and he hasn't responded to a PM or email, so I'll step in and provide some references to get the ball moving on things. Dragonshade, if you come in, just let me know and you can put your references in or reschedule for another time.
All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!
The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here for individuals in Drawspace to use for artistic and educational purposes..
You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.
Reminder:
This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.
There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.
If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.
This challenge will last for two weeks. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

Wow, you're speeding ahead Kim! Excellent drawings. You've caught the reflections in the bowl well and the loose sketchy feel of the grapes is wonderful. Its one of my favourite bowls. I have this thing about bowls and always seem to buy interesting ones when I see them.

Beautiful sketches Kim, and like your refrence picks Jeanette.....I think I may try that old shack, since most days I feel old and rustic.

Brian, you silly man.. You may be a little rustic but never old.
Although right now I can relate to your statement..

Ok I know this is totally off topic but OMG Kim your new advatar looks awesome!!!! You are sooo pretty. (This was the first forum I stopped at so I had to say it in here...

) Ohhh and great job on your pictures. They look really good.
Jeanette for some reason when I went to go save the colored version of the reference pictures and I opened them in my photo enhancer program they came out as thumbnails. I usually go there to check them and resize them and then put them in my kodak program so I can take them to the drug store and print them to draw from and when I went to do it today they came out all fuzzy and distorted because it stretched them too big. I have never had a problem with any of the reference photo's and printing them until these. I tried to copy them on my printer from gray scale (we still have no colored ink) but its almost out of ink too..

So is there anyway you can maybe send them to my email or something so I can save them and print them or whatever needs to be done? I wanted to do them in colored pencils in my class tomorrow.
Thanks!!!

Had to try the kitty cat! Mostly 2B regular pencil on some very old sketch paper.

C&C welcome!

Your eggs are super, Kim & I agree with Venus about the avatar - of course, Venus is no slouch in the looks department either. Sheesh! you all have looks and can draw! Sometimes life just isn't fair! lol

I had a cat that looked just like this, so I had to start with it.
I had a lot of fun with this one, I took a lot of pictures while drawing and turned them into a slide show. Its amazing to watch your drawing come to life.
I'm going to go for the shack next since I have never drawn a house before...

J-Lynn, the cat is lovely. You've caught that soft furry look perfectly. It reminds me of a drawing of an 18th century cat, just can't pinpoint the artist right now. I love it.
Andros, beautiful cat. The colours are just right and you've captured the eyes so well. He does have that cranky look lol He's a stray that adopted me just a few weeks ago, called Tripod as he has only 3 legs.
No, the bowl and eggs aren't easy Lori but you've done a wonderful job on them. The only thing I would comment on is the egg in the forefront in the bowl. The ellipse looks a little elongated on that one perhaps? Beautiful work.
You've created the perfect abandoned house Brian. You have all the elements there, I'm just waiting to hear the crash as the roof collapses!

thanks kim and jeanette, them eggs!! you would think an egg of all things would be easy, it is not. i know what you mean jeanette, i think i did that egg 3 times. all the eggs i did over and over.
brian david-- great house, you did a great job on that. i think i might try that one next. (i am putting off the kitty) houses and animals are so hard for me.

Thanks all.
BD, kudos to you for trying that house! I have downloaded the photo & it's on my list to do but I think I'm going to tackle the eggs next. That bowl is neat!
Good job on your eggs, Lori! They aren't easy, are they? It seems that all art teaches use eggs to teach proper shading & no matter what the setting or lighting, they were a bear to do!
Thanks Jeanette. Instead of laboring over the cat for hours & hours, I decided this one was going to be a quickie! lol I'm trying to speed up my drawing & this poor kitty is the result! He only took a couple of hours.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments, and I hope to finish it.
Thanks Jeanette , that shack may cave in yet as I am still dizzy from doing that playground from the last challenge...I found that one really difficult.
Looking forward to seeing your eggs J-L...I wounder if that one would be easy for me since I have had many an egg in my day...lol
Have a great day everyone.

Well I tried the house in a fifteen minute sketch.
I think I thought I was an artist that knew what she was doing. Apparently, I was sadly mistaken and it now resides in the drawer titled, "What were you thinking!!?"
Sad.. so sad.... LOL
And now that I see Brians shack, I know mine belongs in the "what was I thinking drawer"..
Good job, Brian. It looks great..

Its really such a good exercise to make yourself do a drawing that you feel is outside your level of comfort. One, it tests your technical and observational skill levels; two, it proves that all drawing, no matter how detailed is simply a matter of light and shade.

Nov 17 2006, 12:16 AM
HI Cyn

Awww thanks ..

Kind of you to say ... sometimes what you think is bad may be good to others...you are a great artist ..I would like to see it....that is if you have not retired it to your bin.. from your desk drawer

I also agree with Jeanette , the more the challenge to me the more I learn. I still can not come close to drawing people as well as you. And believe me it took me allot longer then 15 min.......
Cyn
Nov 17 2006, 12:57 AM
Okay Brian, this is all your fault. Here is my 15 minute disaster.
kim1963
Nov 17 2006, 01:10 AM
Ok this is off the subject ... I am saying goodbye to those of you who know I love your work ...and my message to you is keep going with your art ..dont give up even if it seems to hard to do .. if you try it always pays off and you end up impressing yourself and others
Now for my reason of leaving ...I made a complaint ..I feel that Digimug should not have been allowed to lie and say he drew something with pencil ..when he did not ...making excuses when he was caught ...I cant trust people like him ...after Harassing me via e-mail I complained to Jeanette ..someone I trust and felt would understand .. she basicaly told me ...."what did he really do that was all the wrong " and said for me to try and just deal with it ... umm thats the worst kind of advice to give someone ..and coming from her it shocked me . but I stood my ground and I will not deal with it ..why because i dont have too ...and if this is how problems are taken care of here I cant stay...there are others who have left ...wonder what the reasons were ...thing that sad is i love this site .. I love most of the people here .. I am a stay at home mom .. who loves to draw and learn from all of you guys here ...I love all forms of art ..even digital ...just dont lie and pass it off as pencil ..that makes you a liar .. and thats something i will not stay here and be a part of ...so many of you I will miss ..but I DRAW the line to allowing people to come into this site and treat others with disrespect by saying rude remarks ...then when I complain to the moderator I am told .. cant you just deal with it .

You know I'm getting heartily sick of having my words which I offered in private and which are designed to clarify issues and resolve conflicts, turned around by others to suit their own purposes.
Kim, you know perfectly well that is not what I said, so do not garner public sympathy by turning things around please. And yes, it IS off topic.
My apologies everyone. End of story.

Jeanette .. I have the e-mail .. so please do not try and lie to these people i have nothing to gain .. you do .. to keep your position here at drawspace ...I make it public because of what you told me in e-mail ..and how unfair i was treated ..I have deleted my images .. and I am not trying to gain public sympathy ...dont care what anyone has to say .. if they support lieing .. then there words mean nothing to me .
