Full Version: Crayola!
Drawspace > General > General discussion

This afternoon I sat down with my four-year-old to color, and I drew some small pumpkins sitting on our kitchen table. This is with regulation Crayola crayons, and cheap manila drawing paper.

This was fun to do. Seems like Crayolas behave in many ways like wax-based colored pencils (Prismacolors) -- just with weak pigmentation and not very smooth wax. It's easy to fill the tooth of this smooth paper, so you have to be careful. Anyone else have any fine crayon art to share?

Great pumpkins, Ernest. You might wish to bring them to cornucopia challenge;

old drawings in crayola crayons:
I used oil pastels over Crayolas on this one.

I think this guy uses crayons http://forum.artistsnetwork.com/Home/tabid...ic/Default.aspx

Absolutely! A long time ago I posted a link to Don Marco's work, which is totally amazing, and totally Crayola.

Nice pumpkins Ernest

Elena, that rose is lovely.

Kim and Ernest, those two artists are great, thanks for providing the links.

just a silly question. are crayola crayons, coloured pencils or wax pecils? blush.gif

Hi Kaly,

They are what children draw with:

They're made of wax, and as I said, act a little bit more like Prismacolor pencils than you'd expect!
Kaly
Thanks Ernest. I thought it was those but I wasn't sure.

hmm..that artwork is stunningly beautiful and quite pricey..if this is achievable with as inexpensive a medium as crayola why are we spending hundreds on artist grade color pencils is my first question. secondly how about the light fastness of the work, the quality over a period of time etc? after spending 3 grand on a piece of art i wouldnt want to look at it in say 3 to 5 years and find it has faded or perhaps even the colors themselves changing over time..just musing .but that artwork is certainly gorgeous and most impressive

Don Marco's web site has a FAQ, and one of the questions is about how the work ages. He's honest:

QUOTE
How well do your images age, how do you protect your crayon art to it last longer. Would direct sunlight MELT your art?

That's a very common question.

The best way to answer it is - do you have curtains or rugs?

After a while, they fade. As with all art, keep it out of direct sunlight. Frame, matte, and glass appropriately.

It is true that people will spend thousands on carpet, curtains, wallpaper, etc, which will all, eventually, degrade in one way or another. But in any case yeah, this is not artwork for the ages.

Unbelievable stuff. I showed my 8-year-old son one of Don's $3000 crayola crayon masterpieces, and his jaw dropped. laugh.gif

I think Crayola products get a bad rap because they're looked down upon by many professional artists as strictly a children's art medium.

I agree .....but I know because I have used them that they are better then many pencils out there for artist ....the only thing I do not care for is the wax build up .....my uncle use to use crayons then he would put a layer down then run it over the stove just enough to melt it and it blended it nicelty then he added another layer of a different color . worked for him ...I tried but it did not work for me .

one thing i do know that these crayolas are good for...besides eating..(loved them in elem. school) yum.. tongue.gif ohmy.gif
remember melting them all over bottles? anyone else do that? i had a soda bottle as a kid that had layers and layers of melted crayolas in all different colors all over it..it was really quite pretty

I should try practicing in crayons more. I have a ton of them but I rarely use them. The colors just don't come out as bright and vivid as colored pencils which is why I dislike using them. Plus you can't get a fine point on them for detail.
oliverandjazz
wow..after seeing such wonderful work in crayon, i went to a few sites, i feel just AWFUL for spending so much money on my cp's..but i was told i HAD to have artist grade, light fast, pencils, so that is what i purchased.

Ha! laugh.gif I wonder if a hairdryer would work? I may try that this weekend - I'm afraid if I used the stove, we would have to call the fire department. blink.gif

Here's another link to the site of an excellent "Crayola" artist.
