I found this information on another art forum that I participate in and thought it worth sharing here. The post is from Dave in Florida. Thanks Dave! smile.gif

The incredible pencil artist Andrew Loomis wrote a number of instructional books decades ago. All are now out of print. "Figure Drawing for all it's Worth" is a true classic.

You can download the books in .pdf format here

You can download each one separately, or as a single file. The files are large, so it's best to use a DSL , cable, or T1 link to the web. Dial-up will be slow.

The books available at the above link are:

Creative Illustration

Figure Drawing for all it's Worth

Fun with a Pencil

Drawing the Head and Hands

Successful Drawing

The Eye of the Painter

Thank you very much Jeanette - these books are valuable resources for us starting out.

Darn Jeanette thats cool. I want to do download all of the figure and head drawing books but the only way I can download them is if I do all 6 books. I only want 2 and I have dial up. Plus I have no idea if it is my browser that won't let me copy them indiviually. Sooo guess I will have to do without them. Thanks for the page though. biggrin.gif
Cyn
I downloaded all 6 books. I am lucky enough to have broadband.

This is great. Thank you Jeanette.

Thank you so much Jeanette, I was just recently looking for a book of his! How ironic. Anyway, I only have the lowly dial-up connection and since I live out in the country I'll probably never have anything else.

However, my son lives in St. Louis and he is downloading them right now for me. Yippieeeeee

You were right about joining the forums ----- great information -------- helpful fellow artists ---- and above all, inspirational....

Thanks again. I can't wait to get them.

Venus, I must have the slowest dial-up in the world but I'm downloading one of the books now. I don't know what browser you have, but if you RIGHT click on the book you want and select "Save target as" or maybe your browser has the option of "Save link as" you can download the individual books. My download window says it will take around 2 1/2 hours for the Eye of the Painter book!

Dial up sucks, doesn't it?

J

Wow! just went to check on the download & instead of 2 1/2 hours, it was going to take over 10 hours! I stopped it.

Painter48, we live in the country also & it's like pulling teeth to even get decent phone service! Was seriously considering satellite but so many people have problems with it that I haven't done anything about it yet. Plus, we have a pine forest bordering us that may interfere with the line of sight. I still wouldn't trade country life for all the tea in China though.

Wow, I thought mine was bad........I don't get disconnected very often. But sometimes there is "noise" on the telephone line and I can only get connected at around 4kb!!!!! Then I have to call the phone company to come out and check the lines. Satellilte is way too expensive for me. sad_an.gif

I'm recently retired and I used to have DSL at work so I would just use the computer at work for that type of thing. I sure was spoiled. Fortunately, I still remain friends with the girl who took my position and she would have downloaded them at work for me. Also, my son is the Internet Administrator/Technician for Coldwell Banker in St. Louis and I can usually rely on him for just about anything computer-wise. He keeps me updated on anything that would make my computer run faster but so far..........nothing!

But, I'm like you, I wouldn't give up my country home for anything. Cornfields in the front and woods in the back. We may not get DSL and we may not get pizza delivery, and we may get snowed in.............but the peacefulness of country living outweighs everything else. mellow.gif

My son is going to mail me the CD with the Loomis books. If I can copy it, I'll let you know and send you a copy. biggrin.gif

Thanks so much Painter! That's such a generous offer. My daughter can download the books for me if she ever finds time! lol Or, I can do it when I go to visit next time.

Your phone connection sounds like ours - when it's rainy & windy, the phone gets static so bad you can't hear and connecting to the internet is impossible. Satellite IS expensive but I figure between the monthly cost of landline phone service, the cost of my isp & the Rogaine I need to repair the damage of tearing out my hair over it all, it might just be even with what I'm already spending! lol

Are you one of those Mules? I was born in Joplin, Mo and raised not far from there. lol

Again, your offer is much appreciated!

LOL laugh.gif I live in a small town about 25 miles on the Illinois side of the Mississippi from St. Louis. I was born in St. Louis but my parents moved to Illinois when I was 5 and I've lived here ever since. So I actually am a "show me" state girl but my heart is in the "land of lincoln" LOL.

Thank you for sharing this, I have been trying a while to find a copy of some of his books!
Pammy
I downloaded all 6 of these. I also found out this morning that between the web site and these books I can teach a credited homeschool art class for my son biggrin.gif. Thanks so much for the info and the resources. I'm so thrilled!! I am hoping to recieve a payed subscritption to the drawing lessons for Christmas LOL. I bookmarked it under wish lists with the Boyfriend. I am so bad biggrin.gif.
paulette4
Thank you for the link. I wouldn't mind thanking the gentleman that made the books available also, but I did not want to give out my email address. I bet that is why he doesn't get very many thank you's. What did you guys do?
Paulette
IslanderNL
Paulette, I don't know where Dave in Florida got access to the books - and didn't ask! I just thanked him and passed on the link. smile.gif

I'm very sure the original supplier has been well thanked.
Chalktalk
Awesome books. Thanks!
wintermind
Thank you very, very much for linking this! smile.gif

Great link! I finally was able to download all six of the books. I am currently working on printing out Fun with a Pencil. Lots of useful information in these books. Thanks for posting this.
Venus
smile.gif Mrs. Jeanette...I was wondering if you knew anything about printers and maybe if these books could be taken to a printers and printed from cd's after people downloaded them off of the net? I myself find it hard to learn from things when I have to use the computer and find it easier to look at books rather than a computer screen and thought I would see if you knew. I believe these books are out of publishing now right? That they no longer publish these and thats why they are available on the web? Thanks!!! wub.gif
IslanderNL
Yes, you can have the files printed from a cd Venus. MOst printers and copy centres will read your files without a problem and print them. You can even email electronic files to most printers and tell them what you want, then just go get the copies later. I agree, its nicer to have a print copy to browse through than have it on a screen in front of you.

I believe the books are out of print but am not sure why they are available online. I just passed on the link..lol
Venus
tongue.gif Thanks Jeanette!!!!! I think I am going to look into getting them made into little books then. I even thought about printing them myself but they are kind of long books and the cost of ink here is horrible. So I don't dare!!! wub.gif
twincedar
I used the quick print option on the one I am printing and it is not using that much ink. I also printed odd pages and then flipped the pages over and printed even pages on the back to keep the page numbers in sequence and to save paper. I used a three hole punch and put the pages in a notebook and it has worked out just fine. Hope this helps!
Venus
tongue.gif Twincedar...you know I never thought of it that way!!! Thats an excellent idea if it doesn't take much ink. I am not sure about all of the books but there are a few I would like printed. Thanks for the advice!!!!! tongue.gif
twincedar
You are welcome! The one book I printed out so far didn't take much ink with the quick print option and the quality was still good. There are one or two more books I would like to print but I am not sure how much ink it would take to print them all, especially the over 200 page book.
