Hi, everybody! My name is An, Nguyen Van An, I am happy to be your host for this week (Oct 18-24). I'm asked to post the photos today, Saturday, 17.
Here is the general information, recalled for your convenience :
All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!
The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed artwork, that’s great too. The references used are from my personal library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.
You can prefer any form of drawing: graphite, pencil, charcoal, coloured pencil, pen and ink. Watercolour, pastel, oil painting or other techniques (but not computer drawing) are welcome.
If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and many participants to this Drawing Space and myself will be more than willing to try to be helpful.
This challenge is programmed for one week, October 18-24th. However, after October 24, you can continue to post to this place, there is no problem.
If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.
For this week, I have offered 6 reference photos, both in colours and grey scales, mostly taken during my last holidays in Annecy, France.
Fig1 is a young seagull (mouette). May be in pencil or charcoal ?
Fig2 shows a set of sabots, on a wagon (chariot), with a wheel. The gracious lines and composition are rather challenging for your drawing skill. You can, if you prefer, complete the masking parts of the sabots, moving out the table of the wagon. The wheel is rather difficult to draw!
Fig3 is a swan in the lake of Annecy. I love this photo, and signed it for my own pleasure! Watercolour or pastel ?
Fig4 is a small boat, with a composition of various objects and colours. Rich colours, complex lines and proportion indeed!
Fig5 is a very classical still life. Good exercise in pastel or watercolour !
Fig6 is a guitarist singing at the Seine riverside. It’s a real game to reinforce the tension in his face, front, cheek, neck, and in his fingers. I’m sorry for the B&W version, too dark, because the face of the singer is burnt by the sun. Even if you draw in charcoal, you should refer to the colour version.
I hope that the pictures, with various degree of difficulty, will deserve your attention.
Above all, have fun !
Thank you,
An

Another great artwork! Not easy to draw such a model with ink, and you succeed very well. I like in particular the rendering of the hairs and the expression of the face. The background also is very well rendered. You really master the description of the subject.
Thank to all of you for participation and visit,
An

Excellent, Raidor! You got the expression of "surprise" of the bird! The mouette was about 1.5 meter from me when I took the photo! He was rather surprised and curious than frightened!

mh, both are very good; at the first drawing I would also use brush and ink to dilute the shades
thank you for the nice comment

Definitely the guitarist has your favour!

Well...... there's not much I have to say about this one. I love the photo subject but as for my rendition of it, I have another word. LOL
I wanted to try this one so bad but this week with two sick kids, one strep throat and horrible asthma and the other with a fever for 3 days and a nasty cough. I was able to get a little time at night well.. it's now almost 1:00am in NJ. I threw in the towel.
I think that about covers my feelings on it. Sorry NVA this was a fun one though, I love all of your photos.

Dear CHRISMH,
What to say ? First, all my wishes to your kids. That they will quickly recover their health. I imagine you are very tired now. And I admire your work! What a beautiful artwork! How many hours have you spent on it ? I'm happy because you must really like the photo to draw it so lovely! Look at the volume of the sabots. Anh the absolute beauty of the wheel! I can't never do that. The form, the lines, the lighting, all are perfect!
Thank you, Chris ! Give us news about your kids.

Well, I post the photo anyway. Quite different, lazy, emphasis on the" sabots only. Not so well done as Chris's. But, to participate to the challenge...
