Hi! I am a fairly recent lurker. I probably would have lurked forever, but I couldn't resist trying the challenge.
Here is my drawing of Tuesday. I have never drawn a picture of a child and find it difficult to capture the unique qualities of a child's skin. This is probably the best I can do at current skill level.
This is a photograph of my drawing, as I don't have access to my scanner at the moment. Now if I can figure out how to upload it! I can't find anything in the FAQ about image size, so I'm just going to upload it as is. Please let me know if it's the wrong size.[attachmentid=1002]

Wow Morgan. Good eye. Even the dimple. I'm, glad you quit lurking and joined the fun.

You should start an album in your drawspace so it will post it in the gallery for everyone to see. Good job..

The references in this challenge are great! I'd like to try all of them, but just so busy with my work, I even skipped the last challenge... But here is my horse, I'm not very pleased with shadows, but this is the first time I draw a horse. My mom loves horces, I'll for sure paint a horse for her.
Venus, you look so good and you girls are also very beautiful!

Well, here's my horse (not really mine but my drawing for the challenge! lol) Did anyone else notice that that poor horse had one ear on backwards? Well, I think I messed up & just drew it that way (look at the viewer's right ear) but I couldn't see that part of the reference that well. (is that a good enough excuse?

)
C&C welcome!

RJS great job!!! Good likeness to her. I would love to receive it in water color as a present.
J-Lynn loved the vase in color and the horse. Good Job!!
Natafele thanks for the compliments!!! I also love your horse and great job for a first time!! Keep up the good work.
Morgan...Tuesday looks outstanding great job and likeness to her. Get Brenda's book and practice and you'll have portraits down in no time!!!

Wonderful drawing for a quick one RJS. You've got a good likeness there. Perhaps we'll have a watercolour portrait class one of these days and have everyone try their hand at it.
Morgan, you've got a good likeness in this one. Good work!
Natafele, great drawing of the horse.Subtle shadows that create bone structure are more difficult to define, but you're doing well with it.
Excellent drawing of the horse J-Lynn. Yes, its hard to make out the ears so they do look like one is on backwards, doesn't it?
I did a sketch of the horse, but haven't had time to scan it in and post it yet. Later I hope, or tomorrow.

Awww Cyn it looks so beautiful and smooth!!! Great job hun! Now try it in color...

Yeah, right.. You silly girl.. Colored pencils run every time they see me coming.
They seem to jump into
your hands, ready to go. You do beautiful stuff. I tried those grapes with cheap water color pencils and you notice it never got posted.
It was so bad it was put in file 13. (the waste basket)
I will stick with graphite pencils until I get another notion that I'm a brave little artist or something as equally foolish.

Hey Cyn, Markita, Venus, IslanderNL, thanks for kind words about my picture of Tuesday. I'd welcome any suggestions for improvement!
Here's my next effort--a drawing of Crystal. I think the angle of the face is not quite right but I couldn't figure out how to capture the slight downward tilt.

I really love these drawing challenges! Everyone is doing such a great job and it's great to see the original styles and interpretations of each artist for the same reference image. I find it extremely helpful to see how others deal with the image.
I tried the horse (I am a little afraid of portraits but I'll take the plunge at some point) and it didn't come out quite as well as I had hoped. It was harder than it looked! I used HB, 4B, & 6B pencils and a blending stump. It took around 2 and a half hours to do.

David, nice job on Crystal, one thing only stands out to me, the eyes are a little large.
This is one of the major problems with doing portraits, whenever you look at someone the eyes are the first thing you see, they are the things that have the most expression in them and they can make or break a picture.
Yet for such a simple shape, they are the most difficult thing to get right, I cant tell you how many pieces i have scrapped because i cant get this one thing right. Untill i came to this site i had always done eyes the same way with about a fifty/fifty success rate, now, however with the help of Brenda's lessons i have had a lot more success. Take the time to check out the lesson on eyes, it's an eye opener. lol
The rest of the drawing is spot on, you should feel very satisfied.
Racedolls, your portrait is excellent, you too should feel very proud of yourself, well done.
Great horse, Twincedar, i can't do horses, don't know why, just can't, well done.
Pat's on the back all round, good job.

Wow, what a revelation this is! You are all so talented!
I’ve been comparing the many drawings of the challenge photos and am amazed at the diverse styles we have used to represent the same images. I am particularly in awe of those who have taken on the horse and vase pictures because I don’t know how to draw anything except people. Maybe it’s time to start doing those lessons . . .
Lori, your color drawing of Crystal is wonderful! Now I want to learn to use colored pencils.
And David, I love the way you captured the texture of the fabrics (Crystal’s headband and dress).
RJS your 20-minute sketch is amazing. It takes me hours to draw anything.
Drawspace is such a cool website.

Ok here are two of my five pictures I put in for draw challenges..I did the dolphin vase and Tuesday. I did both in #2 mechanical pencil and on canson sketch paper. I noticed after I scanned them I didn't do a very good job at erasing the smudges. I also noticed on Tuesday's eyes one is a bit bigger than the other. I just need to do more practice on the portraits. I think I got a likelyness to her but for some reason she still looks to old, definately not like a 7 year old...I think maybe its the makeup? I love the way the vase came out though..I am pretty happy with it. Comments are welcome.

You shaded rather heavy around an area that was somewhat highlighted in the photo. this is easier to see with comparing the thumbnails. There also seems to be a lot of dimples on the left side. This , the mouth lines, eybrows and undereyes make her look old.

Hi Venus,
This is my first post so if I mess up with protocol please forgive me. I have no idea how to do those thumbnail thingys so I’ll try to post my photo in this reply - hope it works.
I must say I enjoyed working on this project. Your daughter Tuesday has a great face - nice photo too. I chose to do a pen and ink on Bristol board. My scanner is on the fritz so I took a photo of the drawing with my digital camera - sorry for the poor quality.

Thanks Kim,
Ha-ha, I guess it does look like a coloring book. I like trying to use as few lines as possible. Of course mistakes are magnified when you do that. I made a bunch on this one so I don’t think it looks much like Tuesday. Things that jump out at me: the nose is too broad - should have put a highlight on top, dimple is too high, lips are too big and too high, and eyelashes are way too thick… [sigh] There is probably more, but those are the things that bug me the most. It also took four strokes to do her chin, it would have looked better if I could have done it with one continuous line.
In the end I think my drawing makes Tuesday much older.

IslanderNL
Dec 3 2006, 08:27 PM
Pen and ink drawings when simple like this work really well Micah, just as yours does. I think you've captured the elements of the girl. And I think we've all made her look older than she is to one degree of another.
Venus, have you got another picture of Tuesday, just out of curiosity? I'd like to see her without the makeup and costume on if that's possible. I understand if you don't want to do that in this thread.
