Full Version: SKETCHING FROM LIFE - Nov 25
Drawspace > General > General discussion
IslanderNL
Daily drawing is an essential to help you grow and learn as an artist. If you draw something daily, you will find over a period of time that your ability to see shapes and translate them onto paper will have dramatically increased. You will draw more quickly and more efficiently and will render what you see much better.

The traditional drawing class uses real objects to draw from, not references. To study an object in front of you shows you a 3 dimensional image whereas in a reference photo it is one dimensional. The benefits to drawing from life are enormous and so rewarding.

This weekly sketching challenge is designed to encourage people to sketch more quickly, to sketch outside and to sketch in public.

Now here is the meat of the thread. This is a list of objects that you may choose to draw from.

You can choose one thing or 10 things.
They must be sketched from life, not imagination or photographs.
You can use any medium that you like.
When you've drawn your image, then post it here.
You have 7 days to draw items from this list.
There will be no commenting on sketches.

Cyn has kindly provided the list for this week. Thanks Cyn smile.gif

Here's the first one... a sleeping turkey They like to snooze out there in the barn. I think they're rather cute in a weird kind of way. lol

Agreed about the good stuff on the list, Cyn!

Jeanette, your turkey is faint but looks good. I can tell it's a sleeping turkey!

I gotta get cracking on some drawing too, Lori. The middle granddaughter spent the night before last with us and yesterday was just a fun day doing stuff she likes. I'm off tomorrow & maybe I can do some stuff then.

I'm glad you liked the list. I tried to find things that men AND women might like.
You have all really done great. I just got home and I am so far behind...
Nice turkey. I was afraid no one would have a live, or dead, turkey to draw from. I should have known our Jeanette would. LOL
Here is my cousins 'wood stove', Gumby,(which is a 'cartoon character' rubber thing on top of her TV), and a bunch of garlic hanging next to her island in the kitchen (which is the 'something hanging on a wall') blush.gif I am no good at sketches yet.

Lori
Calvin
Ok this is not on the list but it is what I sketched when we went over to my step sons for Thanks Giving. It is a view off his back porch.

Ok here is a quick sketch of how I remember the turkey:

Farfallina
I hope I'm still in time for this.

I've attempted the wine bottle... it's been standing on my dresser for ages just calling to be drawn. smile.gif
Cyn
I love that wine bottle, farfallina. It's great. I'm glad you joined in. I don't drink so I didn't have a wine bottle to do. blush.gif
Markita
Maybe your favorite drink bottle would be ok to use , I myself do not drink , but I do like coke ! smile.gif
Cyn
That's a great idea, Markita. I made the list and never even thought about that. rolleyes.gif

Great sketches everyone. I have a couple of projects on the go this week and haven't had heaps of time for sketching but will keep trying to fit some in where I can.

Here's my favourite chair. I rescued this from the side of the road some years ago as it was being thrown out. It was painted brown and covered in ugly bright orange stretch fabric. So I stripped it down and recovered it and its soooooo comfortable and beautiful. My friend who's an antique dealer says it dates about 1885.

Its a rocking chair but I didn't get enough of it into the sketch. I'll have to try again, so you get a view out of the living room window too. smile.gif

Great sketches out there! Jeanette that looks like the perfect place to read a book. Maybe with Farfallina's bottle of vino next to it. Here are some sketches I did, some while I was away and some this morning.

Well I couldn't get on the computer last night, so I couldn't see the list for sketching or the pictures for the challenge. Anyways, here is a sketch of my son doing his hamework on the computer. He decided to add more dark hair to it. It was strongly suggested that he may not want to touch my work again mad.gif Also here are two sketches of my left hand.
Mark I love how you have Woody actually looking stuffed good job.

Hee hee, Paulette! Love what you said to your son about suggesting that he not mess with your drawings any more! Great job on both the sketches - the one of him is so detailed!

Everyone else is doing great also - so many of you are doing full-fledged drawings & that's great! All are so fun to see.

Neat Woody toy Mark. It looks great.

Love the 'persuading' of your son's behaviour Paulette. lolol Been there, done that. Love the sketches too. Wonderful work.

Here's my child's toy. Ii did this as an ATC (artist trading card) as a request from another forum for a member who is having a baby. The card is in coloured pencil on hotpress watercolour paper and measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches.

The only drawback is that my daughter has seen it and now wants one for herself as she's expecting in January. So I guess I'll be doing more rubber duckies! lol

Thank you Lori and Cyn. I'll try to come up with a little interactive tutorial on how to create a water drop on an object for you.
