With help from a simple grid, you sketch the outline of a tree and use squirkles to shade in the texture of the branches and trunk.

Tried again. Art pencils made it, if anything, worse. Very frustrating. How did you make the leaf shapes so bumpy? And what pencil did you use and how did you differentiate between trunk and leaf during shading?

This is pretty hard for a beginner lesson. I couldn't do it!

This has been the best lesson so far. My tree is not like the original, but I have slightly improved on my shading abilities.

mine was a disaester. first project that was a bomb. the squirkling of the branches just didn't work out for me. it looks like something caught in a blender

I'm happier with this tree than I was with the spruce. However -- I must admit mine looks a little hairy.

I had probems with the rock. It does not look real enough. But this drawing was fun, because it was more complicated to draw than the previous ones.

Yeah the rockface screwed me up too. Still its one of the best tutorials in this section. For the tree leaves I just didn't let my pencil leave the paper and just go wild.

I had fun, it came out better than i expected but still not amazing... i liked that it was a more complicated lesson, we are moving up!

Very nice lesson. I've already come through a feww lessons but the one is very good. A bit more difficult than others and this is why is so exciting. Cliff is not so realistic to look at and branches very difficult to draw but I'm quite happy with my drawing.

I tried to keep my drawing as close to the example in the tutorial has I could. I had difficulty with both the branches and the cliff face as I could not see how to reproduce the same rendering effects as the example with squirkling.
No pain no gain, I guess.

I've been following the lessons for quite a while now, and this one is deffinatly hard! I noticed that she erased her guide lines before she showed where the upper half of the tree is supposed to be postioned. Little bit fustrating, mine looks like its about to snap in half lol!

This is my second try at the Triumphant Tree. I would like to see a lesson devoted to drawing the cliff, which was, for me, harder than the tree.[attachmentid=7161]

I was happiest with how the cliff turned out, I think because it was a smaller space to work with, so I didn't have to keep scrolling to see how it all came out. Before this lesson, I'd add darkest shading at the end. Shown step by step, I did some dark rocks, and then light (grass) at the end.
I came back to this lesson after doing the perspective section. I think a little more practice made a difference.

I really liked this lesson. My tree didn't turn out just like the example but I was pleased with how it did turn out.

I was happy with this lesson, my tree has a little more lean to it, but its believable. Thanks

I think shading concepts are where I need the most improvement so it's neat to do "squirkling" and see it doesn't have to be all laborious, crick-in-your-back inducing detail work.
My tree from this lesson. It took like five minutes total (I'm only using a pencil with HB lead, not two pencil types as instructed... sorry!).

good effect from very little detailed work - that's the sort of thing I like!
Looks better from a distance I think

A hidden lesson that's not on the main index
It was interesting

the cliff was the most difficult part, I think
