Mindy your sketch is very good;you only need the darks at the meeting point of the bowls.
Here i used a mechanichal pencil over your sketch. Hope you don't mind, Mindy

That's great Elena, thanks. Those darks you see in my sketch are actually as dark as the paper would take using an HB, and as I was away from home I didn't bring my good pencils. It's a very slick, smooth sketchbook paper. It gives an interesting effect but very difficult to sketch on (in my opinion). Should have chosen more wisely when I bought the book. But for now it will have to do.
Here's another from today, about 30 minutes with HB and 8B.

Your eggs are excellently shaded, Mindy and shaped, only that the line definition is perceptible. It shouldn't be.Look at the cast shadow and see how smooth you did the shape of the contour. You need something similar for the contour of the eggs.Maybe being light colored you need to darken the background so they can pop off by value not line.

Tried the toothbrush. I enjoy drawing hands, so my hand is included. The bristles of the toothbrush defeated me, I was clueless how to draw them. It's something to practice more in the future.

I think you did well with the eggs Mindy. Half the appeal, for me, in sketches is the loose, choppy look of the lines. I love seeing the construction lines then how it fills out from there.
And toothbrush bristles. Its a bit like drawing hair or fur. You draw the negative shapes which are usually the shadows and the bristles then appear as if by magic! Great drawing.

Looking at all your drawings inspired me to go out and try it myself. So I walked to the park next to the river not too far from my place and sketched the bike path there.

Hi everyone !
I know there hasn't been a whole lot of action on this thread lately, but I think it's a good place to post my latest sketch. It's a 2B pencil sketch of a puppy figurine. It stands about 3 inches tall (the figurine, not the sketch !).

Nice work everyone... not a lot of action on this thread, but what the heck... I am a novice and I haven't drawn from real life in a while... Charcoal and graphite

Alxolex, that sketch of the puppy figurine is so adorable, great job. Thanks for bringing this thread back to the top, it's really good practice to sketch from life. Although I hope Jeanette comes up with a new list of objects soon; I'd be happy to put up a fresh list, but she started the thread...
Tannis, great sketch! It looks so stylish and has a good background.

Some time back, we had a sketching thread. This was based on drawing subjects from life.
Sketching is likely THE most valuable exercise you can do to improve your drawing skills. Also drawing from life is another. If you sketch daily, you'll soon see your ability to render form and light grow by leaps and bounds.
I will post a list of items that you can choose to draw. The rules are:
1. You MUST draw from life. No photographs!
2. You can choose to draw one item or the whole list.
3. Post your sketches as you do them.
4. The list will last for one week, then be replaced with another.
Remember these are sketches, not finished drawings. Of course you can make them as detailed as you like, but normally sketches are looser, unfinished drawings.
Its that simple!

Have fun!
The ListAn egg

Your toothbrush
A spoon
Something red
Your favourite chair
A salt shaker
Your breakfast

Hi, Sveta and Katdyd,
I have opened months ago a challenge on DRAWING SHOES. A lot of people visited and posted. I just came back after a long absence and see that people continue to visit. May I have the permission to post the shoes of both of you there ? I would be happy if you repost them in the Challenge, to keep the collection alive. Thanks,

Sveta, beautiful sketches. The colors are so pretty.
I tried to keep this thread going for a while, but I haven't done any sketches lately. And Jeanette started this thread, but either she hasn't been around or she's too busy to think up a new list of things to draw. Maybe one of us should continue it?

Thank you, Mindy. I've tried to think of some new interesting topics for sketching from life.
Of course, the initial one, offered by the host is still here and deserves to be maintained.
And everybody can add whatever he likes, if it is life sketching.
Here is my list:
1. The oldest object in your house.
2. The newest object in your house.
3. Your favourite object in your house.
3. The first thing or creature you see when you wake up.
4. The last thing or creature you see before you fall asleep.
5. Your hands.
6. Your feet.

Thanks for the idea. And it's a well-constructed drawing even though you've made it that way.
Now, that's a challenge - I've tried it but I concentrated on gliding and here it is- a total failure!

Sveta, why would you say it's a total failure ? These hands are pretty nice ! I mean, considering it's an exercise to improve eye-hand coordination, I think you nailed it !

Sveta, thanks very much for the new list! The sketching from life thread is fun - I'm going to get started on this list over the weekend (along with the two other drawings I'm working on). You have also inspired me to try a few pen and ink drawings - yours are so lively!

Jeanette started this thread a long time ago and it has been a good thread ...I use to post here alot and enjoyed it ...so I decided to add a sketch I did tonight of a couple of things around my place .
one is my favorite thing ..its a necklace that says mom on the front and we love you and mu kids name on the back ..they bought it for me for christmas one year ....I wear it always .
the other is what I see at night after I kiss my husband ...the top of our canopy ...I crocheted it .

Nice, Kim!
I put pencil to paper today for the first time in at least a week, and here's what I did: a sketch from life of my daughter, reading. Longtime members will recognize this as a common theme of mine -- I've drawn her from life many times. This is one of the better ones, I think.

There's a delicate feeling of intimacy in Kim's sketches.
And the reading daughter's sketch is perfect!
Here I've tried to study my recently favourite thing in the house- a strange exotic plant that has had no blossoms for years and now, when it is classic winter outside, it has produced a strange flower.

It's a shame - I don't know what the plant is called, it is some sort of cactus perhaps, although it doesn't have thorns.

Sveta, your drawings are wonderful, very lively! Where did you learn to draw so well? Here's my contribution to the thread (finally), not a very good drawing, but I'm not good at working in color. This is the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning - my Christmas lights outside the front door (I sleep in the living room - strange life). I did try pen and ink, a sketch of two dogs - it was on the gallery but is gone now. Maybe the dogs went to play!
