Now, please know I am not trying to take attention away from this site, because, so far, I love it. I do however like to have a list of good websites for art, like where you can post and have your art critiqued. DeviantArt used to be awesome, but now it has kinda turned into "Oh this is cute, post more" when in all actuality, it sucks, no one wants to see the first, let alone more. Then when you do want to help someone get better by critiquing their work, THEY GET P*ssed!
So... I'll stop ranting but please post art websites you like and then how harsh they usually are on critiques, please list as many as possible even if someone has already said it. OH, and any sites with great tutorials.
I'll say the first I guess, Conceptart.org , go there if you want your art torn to pieces via critques, it is awesome for progression, but seriously, if you are really clinging to your style and mistakes, don't get P*ssed when you go here and your art gets killed. It helps a lot though guys, trust me.
your turn, go go go go!

(Again, I love this site so far as well, the tutorials are great.)

Online forums vary as to critique ability. You don't know the skill level often of the person who is critiquing and there is often no formal process to do so, so its wise to look around and read a bit first before putting your work out for examination. The art forums that have merit and act professionally, in my eyes, are WetCanvas and ArtPapa. Like all things, you may like one or none, so its down to you to do your homework and find which suits your needs.

Many people online are simply looking for a place to show the world their work and get a pat on the head for it, no matter what the quality. Hence there are many who get all upset when someone offers some advice on how to change their work for the better. In art classes, we were brutally critiqued and while painful at times, it worked so well to show us how to better ourselves. You cannot move ahead without reviewing your work and being willing to accept that you are less than perfect.

We have a dedicated Critique Thread here as do some other art forums. To help those who are critiquing, no matter where the place, its useful to state what your medium is, what you're trying to achieve and what you are trying to improve on. I think in our heart of hearts, we all know where our weak areas are and rarely believe the 'great job!' comments as they really don't say anything either good or bad about our art.

Both DeviantArt and Conceptart look like they concentrate on computer graphics and manga, which is fine but not my taste.
Wetcanvas looks like an excellent learning site for drawing, painting, tons of stuff; however it's confusing to navigate at first.
Also I just checked out ArtPapa, and from what I saw it looks a lot like Drawspace as far as the balance of painting & graphite drawings in the members gallery. Not sure yet what kind of tutorials it has.

Drawspace is my place of choice for learning to draw, and the community here can't be topped. It's still useful to know of these other sites though, so thank you Boo, Elena, and Jeanette. wink.gif

I agree with Mindy.. I briefly looked at the site Boo put up.. and just what I did see ,unlike Drawspace it is more for someone who likes graphic and computer art and not real drawing? tutorials are important to me and even tho we do a lot of back patting it's sometimes the encouragement a newbie needs .. feeling comfortable in asking questions and getting constructive crits.. ..I like the different tutorials in different mediums. I didn't search the entire site but from what I did I couldn't find anything that showed me how they made their art.. I will have to look closer.. but looked like a lot of Photoshop, etc.. also was a bit more for the younger generation that is in to sci fi and dark side characters.. ?I may have just hit one like that and there are others I could understand?? Hard to tell if it was computer enhanced art or the real deal.. I think for me I'll stay with Drawspace and those like it.. so much out there to explore.. so it's your own personal choice.. ..

DrawSpace seems to be the best place to learn for drawers/sketchers/illustrators.
I haven't found another "drawing" site that comes close in my opinion.

There are a lot of online drawing/painting sites for digital users.
Sketchfu.com, (although that site now lags quite a bit), 2Draw.net, ( I feel they tend to be too harsh too much of the time....or just plain snotty even to other extremely talented artists), RateMyDrawings.com, & Queeky.com, as well as many others. The one I liked best just closed down, Floating Ginkgo, but that's spilt milk. sad.gif

It's just been a week ago today that I finally got around to joining Deviant Art. I used to browse there a lot and I understand what you mean by more commenting rather than critiquing, but, there are still a ton of talented artists there and you just have to make it clear whether or not you want or expect critiques. I don't generally ask for it, but, I do appreciate it when it's given in the spirit you mentioned. I do want and intend to learn more, but, a well placed "way to go!" can sure heal your ego after someone else has just raked your skill level all over the coals!

I only recently came across WetCanvas so I haven't had the chance to really check that one out yet.

Anyway, my real point was supposed to be that there are positive points about all of these sites if you find the right fit and make the most of what they offer. But, that was before I started writing this "novel"....lol.

This site is great for seeing what is possible:

www.drawingboard.org

outstanding art and artists, drawing jams, some good critique and some
back patting.
Nice folks, they have a new post thumbs that come up
on the front page, and I got tired of seeing so many nudes on the
very front, especially while my kids were around. Be warned of that.

But, like I said, there is some GREAT artwork, from all mediums on
that site.

also:

a personal favorite is:

www.penciljack.com, it is mostly for comic book artists and
illustrators, they have weekly sketch threads, jams, critiques, etc.
It is a good place, though very different, than drawspace, in the
nature of the art, the intent of the forum. Many professional comic
book artists are on that site, it's cool to see what they produce, and
they usually will give honest, helpful (though sometimes
painful) critiques. Great place to learn anatomy, action, etc....

Hi,
I have a very few 'well done' work (speaking for myself). I'm still way behind being 'serious' with art.
That being said, my opinion is, if you are in the 'identity crisis' stage (uncertain of your personal taste of art), better do the art site hopping. I've visited MyAmericanArtist, how-to-draw-funny-cartoons and theryderstudio, among the few. But I'm more interested in drawspace. I don't vote for messy art stuff. I love pencils --graphite, charcoal, colored, and watercolor pencils. I highly regard, though, watercolor for its challenging (really tough medium) nature.
Bottomline is, preference. You will always be where you feel at home. I don't have time attending to intimidation. Let critics come and... go! You can either learn or not at all. Other art sites have their own stand --who doesn't have? So does every member.

I have some work posted on Deviant Art, but I tend to really not like it either. It seems that a lot of it is 50% nudity with the title "art" that is typically just ****. There are only so many boobs you can post and keep the art title behind it!! haha.

I use DeviantArt, but I truely like Drawspace better becuase the focus I need this site has it and the only place I know of that can help with that is here. DeviantArt is a great site for other things but to focus on Pencial Drawing and it's possiblities that you can do with pencial drawings... I rather stay here than anything else. You have a group of people here who I'm finding respect one another, however maybe opinions as to what is art might don't mesh well, and for me... that's okay.

Art is in the eye of the beholder... smile.gif
