Welcome to the Drawing Challenge - # 6. Hello, my name is Joanie or Painter48 and I will be hosting the challenge of December 10 to December 23rd. All the way to Christmas Eve. I know a lot of you will be busy in the next couple of weeks but try to take a few moments and de-stress yourself with some drawing in your sketchbook.
I hope you will enjoy the pictures I have chosen to draw as I have tried to pick pictures that would appeal to all levels of participants, Beginning - Intermediate & Advanced. I have also added references to Brenda's Lessons to help some of you on these pictures. I just had to throw in a few Holiday pictures and a couple of portraits since everyone seems to like doing them. Sorry, no animals, I don't have any pets at this time and the neighbor's dog won't sit still long enough for me to take his picture. LOL
The rules are: You can use pencil, graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, chalk, conte, or pen and ink. If you use watercolor pencils, you must use them dry. You can add the water after you have submitted the drawing. No painted pictures allowed.

1. Birdhouse Still Life -
Refer to Lesson D10 on Squirkling2. Holly -
This is my granddaughter at 18 mos.(Yes, her name really is Holly) LOL - Refer to Lesson H15 Baby Cameo3. Matthew - This is my 12 year old grandson - Refer to Lesson H04 Eyelashes. He has the most beautiful blue eyes and those eyelashes!! Wow. He usually wears glasses so this is an unusual picture of him. Try this one and only do the eyes, not the whole face for practice.
4. Pitcher Still Life -
Refer to Lesson B03 and J03 on Symmetry This should be the easiest of all the pictures.5. Copper Plate Still Life -
Refer to Lesson J03 Symmetry6. Christmas Balls -
Refer to Lesson G03 Smelly Spheres or Baldy Noears. (Pick just one ball and draw it if you feel that there are just too many)7. Christmas Snowmen & Santas -
Refer to Lesson D10 Textures (Again, pick just one snowman or santa and draw it if you like)8. Holly Jolly Christmas -
Dec. 25, 2005. She's 2 years old here. I just had to throw in one more Christmas picture. Refer to Lesson H14 and PO3, PO1 Draw one or as many as you like. Try just sketching one. Try getting outside your "comfort zone" and draw one that challenges your artistic abilities. But most of all, Have FUN !

WOW Joanie!! quite some challenge you have for us here! I'm just barely awake and you already have me looking for negative spaces!!

I can see where you're coming from - composition, types of hair, shades of eyes, metallic reflection, texture...WOW again! I wish I had good colours but since I don't I'll have to stick with shades of grey.
Now why is it that I can see it all in my head but get lost when it comes to setting what I see on paper?!
But I will most definitely try some of these. I'm particularly intrigued by the boy. I have never as yet drawn a boy and I would love to learn so I can some day draw my perky little grandson!

Thanks for the time you took putting this together.

Thanks Joanie for the wonderful range of pictures.
It's a difficult choice . They are all nice pictures.

What a fabulous choice of images Joanie! Thank you for the time and effort you put it this challenge. I love the references to Brenda's lesson, what an inspired idea!
Yes, a hard decision as to which to choose from, I want to do them all

I'll see how many I can fit in during the run up to Christmas. Your grandson has the most beautiful eyes - most women would kill for eyelashes like that. lol

Joannie great pictures. I think I am gonna burn them to a disk and put them on my new computer. I can't get online with it yet being as how it came full loaded but without a modem. So we ordered one and it will take a few days. Then I have to wait for Brian to put it in. Shouldn't be too long though.
Jeanette...yes most boys always have the georgous eyelashes and if girls are born with them they are lucky!!!! Not many do.

Whew - I was worried about my choices but I guess I did okay. I really did try to get something for everybody and I added the little notes for suggestions that I could see to be done with the pictures. I'm sure everyone will come up with their own interpretations.
I actually took my camera into the store in hopes of getting a picture of a nice Christmas Tree that was already decorated since I don't put one up at my house. I like these pictures even better.
I went to Hobby Lobby with my camera to get those pictures of Santa and Snowmen, I tried rearranging them to a pleasing picture and turned most of the price tags without being too noticible. Then I just happened across a basket of Christmas Balls that were sitting on the floor ready to be put on the shelves, so I turned them around and tried to hide all the price tags and took a picture! hahahaha Nobody said a word to me either! Too funny. hahahaha What we won't do for art!!!! LOL
Venus, you're right, it never seems like its the little girls that get the big eyelashes! I wish the photo would have shown the pretty blue of his eyes better. They look a little on the grey side in that photo but they are the prettiest blue. Like I said, Matthew wears glasses (poor baby wears bi-focals) and they tend to hide those eyelashes in most pictures.
Rose - good job on "seeing" all of the different things in each picture. That's what I was aiming for.
I know we all have a lot of things to do in this busy season but I appreciate everyones participation. Now, get off your computers and DRAW!

So here I am with my first two drawings.
I had a hard time with the first one - how on earth do you shade white!!
But I think I did better on the second one...I guess that was a bit of a learning curve. I particularly enjoyed the copper plate!

I may not have so much time now that he weekend is over but I really want to try my hand at one of your grandchildren Joan... they are lovely!

Wow Rose, that was really fast, and you did 2 of them! You did a fantastic job on both.
White is never really white. Does that make sense? Use the paper for the highlights of white and draw it grey!
Especially good job on the copper plate, I'll have to try that one myself. I'll bet if you had colored pencils you would do really well with them.

Nice work on the still lifes Rose. White is like any other colour, you just need to look for the tonal changes. You've done very well with both these.

Kim, love the colourful jumble of Santas. They'd make such a cute card.
Cyn, that's a sweet portrait of the baby, you've gotten an excellent likeness.

Painter...I did the picture of your granddaughter Holly when she was a baby. I know I didn't do her justice. I am still having a pretty hard time with portraits but not giving up yet. I am redrawing it now but will show my first attempt. I also plan on doing a few of the still lifes with my new prismacolored pencils...hehehe I need and electric pencil sharpener first. 120 is alot of pencils!!!! I couldn't resist and did a little sketch of the jugs on some yellow lined paper. I'll do them properly later. You can also see the ghost of your grandson's eyes on the other side. A doodle that didn't quite make it.

Thanks All, you are too kind. Anyways I tried the baby again (just in regular #2 pencil on canson sketch paper) but I think this one came out alot better.
Fatcat I wasn't talking about doing the portrait in color...LOL. I need to perfect drawing portraits first. I meant the ornaments and snowmen I was going to do in color...or the other still lifes.
So far everyone is doing a wonderful job with the draw challenge!!! I blame it on the wonderful reference photos provided by our new host!!!!

Super drawing of Matthew Rose. You go from strength to strength with your art. Lovely work.
Holly as a baby is a little challenging with lots of angles, but you've done very well with it Venus. Every drawing makes us better.

LOL, Kim, I know yellow lined paper. I was at work at the mood struck me. What can I say?? LOL
My pleasure Brian, always here to make you smile.

I haven't got time tonight to work on much drawing, I'll try tomorrow if I can.

Venus - good job on the portrait of the baby. I can't believe you did it twice already! hahahaha You guys are fast! I'm with you on the portraits though, its practice, practice, practice. Thank you for the very kind comment about my challenge pictures. I can't wait to see your work with those new pencils. Be careful when sharpening them, you'll burn up an electric pencil sharpener real fast. When I got mine, I would just sharpen a few at a time while I was watching TV. Just make sure you sharpen the primary colors first so you can use them. LOL I was very pleasantly surprised when I bought my Verithin pencils, they were already sharpened!!!
Rose - you really did a great job with Matthew. My husband walked in the room when I had just pulled it up on the screen and he commented "hey, you did a really great job of drawing Matt". I didn't take the credit though, I told him that you drew it and not me. So you see, he recognized Matt right away. (he had never seen that picture that I posted). I like the way you finished off the top of his head. It really looks like that. He likes to keep his hair very short - mostly like a military haircut - high and tight is what they call it. LOL I know you think the eyelashes are a bit exagerated, but you know what?, his lashes really are BIG.
Racedolls - I don't exactly know if she captured the spirit of Matthew or not. hahaha LOL He is quite the handful - he is bi-polar and has ADHD - he's a good kid and an extremely smart kid, but he can drive you crazy sometimes. He is getting better as he gets older. LOL
Jeanette - I'm with Kim - yellow lined legal pad????? Where's the moleskin? Hahahahahaha Good job though, as usual.

Very nice wrok everyone.
I have corrected Matthew's portrait. Looking at it with fresh eyes this morning the right ear seemed far too small in proportion. It's amazing how you don't see such things when you've been working on something for some time! Hpwever, that is now fixed and Matthew now has perfect hearing even in his right ear.

I've also tackled Baby Holly... great fun!!

Nair - good job on the portraits. The baby is a very challenging portrait.
Rose - you cease to amaze me, you did yet another picture! Wow. Matthew has very big ears that stick out along with those big eyes! hahaha Great likeness on Holly. That is a hard one to draw. I never could do it justice.
Just so everyone knows, the picture of Holly as a baby was taken on Easter and she wasn't used to walking outside with shoes on so she has her arm over the back of her head because she is holding on to her mom's hand and she is trying to run to a basket full of eggs! So her pose is sort of awkward. I just thought that the look on her face was cute with the little yellow hoodie to surround it. I'm not a pround Grandma am I ?????LOL

You girls are great.. You made me feel so much better about my feeble attempt. I was really feeling disappointed in myself because I have never in my 6 1/2 months of drawing, tried still life. I thought to myself, "How hard can it be. It's just a pitcher and jug". Duhhh! It's harder than anything I have tried so far. I sure admire all of you that can do still life. I got so discouraged with trying to make it look right, that I got tired of working on it. It's a symmatry thing as well as real darkness. Maybe I should have walked away and tried more later. Sometimes it's hard to walk away. Also, I was trying to get over being afraid of the dark. Laura offered me her night light but I needed a whole flood light.
