CoachKWL
Hello and welcome to this week's challenge!
This is the first time I'm hosting and I hope I have at least one subject your interested in attempting.
Below are the general guidelines for this challenge.
I look forward to seeing your work.
Have Fun and Enjoy!

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered a number reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Here's my answer to the challenge, not a very good one though. Hope to have some spare time and try once again.

Great job Claudio. When you do start collecting Ants, make sure they're dressed properly before going out into that Canadian winter!

I will be attempting the same photo. Should have it done by Tuesday.

I look forward to seeing other member's attempts! laugh.gif

Well done. Lake Erie is currently frozen over. It is a very relaxing place to go during the warmer months. Lake Erie runs into the Niagara River that leads to the famous Niagara Falls which is about 45 minutes from my home.
mumwond
I just tried your daughter on her own as I'm trying to come to terms with portraits in colour pencil. Hope your wife doesn't see the comment about the mailman! My Mum used to say I was like the coalman as I was always dirty - I used to look at him and wonder. She is a lovely wee girl and I hope she doesn't mind what I've done to her.
CoachKWL
Here is my attempt at the carousel picture.
That ATC trade with the flowers this month has me working the colored pencils so I figured I bring them into this drawing.
This photo was screaming color. I might do a b&w of it at a later date but for now a quick effort with cp.
Took about 2 hours.

Nice job Kay and Elena!
I hope to get the beach scene done for my wifes birthday tomorrow. She'll be 29 again. wink.gif

The moose and many other animals were on display at Cabello's. They had a huge mountain display with the animals scattered throughout it. It was pretty impressive.
CoachKWL
Here's my attempt at the fly.
I wanted to practice with pen. I've been using it during the flower ATC trade and liked the outcome of some of those cards.
I decided to add some color to the little pest.
Pastels with some color pencil
5x7 on smooth bristol approx 1 1/2-2 hours to complete.

Ok, this is my first time posting a picture here. I must have messed up my first post with the way I tried putting the image in it.

Anyway, here's my sketch of the father and daughter at the beach. I felt like sketching in ballpoint blue today smile.gif

Hey Vee, that's excellent! I love the blue pen. Give's it a nice effect. I'm laughing because that's actually my son and daughter.
He's 15 and she's 7. He's already 6'1" and climbing. I'm hoping he becomes a father some day but let's wait about 10 yrs!
Thanks for contributing!

My wife said, "Your drawing a fly?" After doing the flower ATC trade the past two weeks, I guess I needed to do something manly and less feminine. You can't get less feminine than a FLY! cool.gif

Wow, great pictures everyone. Well done.

Here is mine, I thought I'd have a go at the statue. 2B pencil.

Hi, great drawings everyone!
Here is my contribution: the bird in ink.
I must thank Ken for the challlenge. This is the first time I draw something else than a landscape or a plant. I have never drawn an animal or a person, and I am very happy with this one.
Claudio

mumwond
Claudio - You are really brave drawing in ink. You made a great job of the bird.
I tried the boat last night - I used soft pastels for the sky and water and the black coloured pencil for the boat - if I'd enough confidence, the boat would have been good in ink, but I'm a coward.

I like your subtle touch with colors. Maybe an inked boat would break this subtility.

Very nice drawings by everybody.

Here's a sketch of the two children on the beach with pastels. The photo is one of those that the longer you look at it the more you find beautiful.

Good luck to everybody.

Well this really makes me rethink my approach on this same scene. I am finishing up my version and will give it to my wife tonight for her birthday. I will post it later. Yours is much more in-depth. That is something I need to visualize more when I am approaching a project. Thanks for sharing yours! It's terrific!
CoachKWL
Here's my version of the beach scene.
I like it but I don't love it. We'll see how it looks framed and maybe I'll add a little when I have more time.
This is one of my early attempts at using pastel chalk. I like working with it, but it does get messy.
Do you spray this with the same fixative you use with pencil / graphite?

Ken

I like your version better - it's clearer. I use a very old bottle of fixative for charcoal, pastels and pencil(Windsor&Newton).
