Full Version: SKETCHING FROM LIFE - WEEK OF DECEMBER 16TH
Drawspace > General > General discussion
IslanderNL
Daily drawing is an essential to help you grow and learn as an artist. If you draw something daily, you will find over a period of time that your ability to see shapes and translate them onto paper will have dramatically increased. You will draw more quickly and more efficiently and will render what you see much better.

The traditional drawing class uses real objects to draw from, not references. To study an object in front of you shows you a 3 dimensional image whereas in a reference photo it is one dimensional. The benefits to drawing from life are enormous and so rewarding.

This weekly sketching challenge is designed to encourage people to sketch more quickly, to sketch outside and to sketch in public.

Now here is the meat of the thread. This is a list of objects that you may choose to draw from.

You can choose one thing or 10 things.
They must be sketched from life, not imagination or photographs.
You can use any medium that you like.
When you've drawn your image, then post it here.
You have 7 days to draw items from this list.
There will be no commenting on sketches.

Kim1963 has kindly provided the list for this week. Thanks!

Great list.. Here are my quick things I did at my cousins. My towel looks like a roll of something and the laundry basket doesn't look like wicker. Practice, practice, practice. tongue.gif

Wow Cyn, you've been busy! These are great sketches. It really helps to sketch each day I find.

Here are a few that I've done today. In my Moleskine pen and ink with graphitints and wash for colour

Cyn
Those are lovely sketches, Jeanette. What's in the Christmas present? I want that one. laugh.gif
I love the colors. It would have taken me forever to do something in color. Like the dog you did in the other forum, absolutely gorgeous.

Great list Kim - thank you.

Cyn - you really have been busy! smile.gif

Jeanette - you work is always so lovely.

I tried my hand at a few things... my desk lamp, my address book and my espresso cup. I found the foreshortening of the top of the lamp very challenging but I think it didn't turn out too badly.... but as for the cup I think I'm much better at drinking the espresso!! rolleyes.gif

Hi all.....I applaud everyone who found time to do some sketching - great work. Mine is really messy but this is a very busy week. Have to give it up for today and get back to seasonal chores LOL! I actually do sketch on a little Tablemate beside this lamp and keep brushes and pencils in two glass cups beside me. The other square thingamajig is for water in case I get the urge to use my watercolor pencils.

Nice work Maire. There's always time for sketching. If you can sit and have a cup of coffee, you can sketch, You can sketch on the phone, while you watch tv, waiting for the kids, etc etc.

Here's my watercolour brushes sitting in an old jar. The jar is older than I am! And that's old. lol Sorry for the awful scan, I didn't take time to adjust it.
