Some of you may be familiar with this picture. [attachmentid=1353]

As an exercising in drawing only what I see it I drew it upside down. [attachmentid=1354]

All went pretty well as you can see from the right side up view of it..... except.... except when I came to the hands. At that point my brain kept telling me that those are fingers and they should behave like fingers! The only things that don't work in my picture are the hands... you could say I got cold feet when I came to the hands. laugh.gif

Why does the brain play such tricks on us even when we are deliberately trying to make it come out of the logical mode? How do you overcome it? What other exercise would you suggest? What tips do you have that you can share?

No help here ,just a little fun! dry.gif

This is the reason I hardly ever listen to my brain. tongue.gif

Rose - I think its the same reason we don't put our hand in fire. The logical brain says "Hey, don't do that!" ROFL Its a good thing that our logical brain takes over. LOL

Rose I think maybe if you try by not looking at the picture as what it is and just veiw it as shapes ...like that gold liquid challenge you just had to start with shapes ..not sure if that helps .
ukartist
yes kim i agree with i think that shapes is one of the best ways buy Lee ames draw 50 books she use shapes

IslanderNL
Everyone is right. To convince the left side of the brain to go away and leave you alone for awhile, you need to make the drawing that you're doing unrecognizable to it.

Turning references upside down, drawing amall sections at a time too all help, but the left side does like to label things. With time you will tune that out and get into 'the zone' and nothing will matter but your drawing. Try concentrating purely on the line you are creating and not to think about what it is you are making - eye, hand, foot, etc. Just look at the shape and let your pencil follow the shape.

It will all fall into place, I promise. smile.gif

Oh my gosh .... thank you jeanette i was not sure if i was right or not and I hate to say anything for fear .. it will guide them in the wrong direction ..smile.gif

This doesn't help with the art, but I thought you might be interested in what the mind can do in another area.

Works like a charm doesn't it? Quite amazing. The mind is something else.
Farfallina
Yes Paulette I was aware of that... and a good thing too that that happens.

I'm such a bad typist my friends would have a hard time understanding a word I said to them in chat if they weren't able to do that! I'm renowned for my fomping tuping!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

sleep.gif I could read that. Rose alot of times I listen to music when I am drawing that way the brain doesn't tell me what to do. While my hands are drawing my mind is singing. Unlike drawing I also have a decent voice and love to sing. When I was pregnant with patience a few years ago I used to be into Karaoke alot. I came in 4th place at a local bar we used to frequent (before they tore it down mad.gif ). So trying to other things to keep the mind occupied at the same times also helps.

Kim actually that a hemangioma. Alot of children develope them either before birth or shortly after. She got hers at about 2 weeks. Started as a little pea sized red dot and as she got older the dot and lump got bigger. I took her to a specialist and they wouldn't remove it, they said that children who develope have them no longer than their 5th birthday. They will go away on their own and at most she may have to have the access skin removed and stitched together after it goes down. They said to remove it now would cause the scar from it to get bigger as she got older. So I left it alone. Still waiting for it to go away though. They also tried to say because it was in her hair line they would probably have to do the stitches to make sure their wasn't a gap in the hairline...but I guess she is lucky because her hair is growing through the hemangioma. Her pediatrician was surprised said she had never seen hair grow through one so maybe she won't even need the stitches. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!! wub.gif
