Hi guys..I thought i would share a childrens story i have recently finished. I am now in the process of trying to illustrate it..I have done a couple of pictures for it but did not like them..i am looking for a very simple illustration style and plan on using watercolors..each paragraph will have a picture and it involves quite a bit of work.

This is my work, the writing, the idea, the story, and hopefully soon the drawings,..please NO STEALING MY STORY..feel free to share it with your children.

i have different ideas for the pages as well..such as perhaps finding a four leaf clover in the artwork on each page. I think the story may be suited for children in the perhaps 2-6 yr old age range. I plan on having simple bold type for the words..kind of like the golden books..remember those?

anyhoot..enough babbling, i would very much appreciate honest feedback on the story..some artwork ideas are to follow soon.

As Tyler played in his yard
He heard a tiny "Neigh",
He stopped what he was doing,
and turned his head that way.

The sound it was coming from the clover over there
It was small; that was sure and he couldn't tell just where.

Getting down on hand and knee to get a closer look,
he was certainly surprised to see a tiny nook.

In that nook, he could plainly see, a tiny unicorn, as real as he.
The poor little thing was in a wee bit of trouble,
for a tree branch had popped his fantasy bubble.
Without these bubbles to ride in you see,
no unicorns can make it to the land of fairies.

With a small and thoughtful grin,
Tyler put his little hand in.
The unicorn climbed out of the nook,
he neighed, and he stomped and his mane he shook.

The unicorn was thankful and was trying to speak,
but tyler held him closely to his little cheek,
the unicorn placed a magical kiss upon that little face,
and told him that his life would be blessed with love and grace.

Tyler held the unicorn and raced across the yard,
he knew how to make a bubble, and he knew it wasnt hard.
He would ask his mom to mix some up and put them in his favorite cup.

The unicorn watched with hope in his eyes,
As Tyler blew a bubble, But NOT the right size.
"Oh No", cried the unicorn, "blow one that's not so small,
Cause as you can clearly see I am really quite, quite tall."

The unicorn stood to his tallest of heights
and puffed out his chest with all of his might.
Try as he will to be as large as the finches,
I'm afraid he still measured, oh.. about two inches.

Tyler blew another bubble, then blew one more,
he blew and he blew, till he could blow no more.
Not one of the bubbles were quite large enough,
for our little unicorn, strong and tough.

They sat side by side, the unicorn and he;
neither as big as they wanted to be.
When all of a sudden there came a strong wind,
and Tyler got an idea with a grin.

He filled his bubble wand and he held it high,
and when the wind blew, bubbles began to fly.
Big ones, Small ones, wee ones and tall ones,

the unicorn was happy to be
safe in a bubble on his way through the trees.
Tyler waved to the unicorn as he floated past,
safe in his bubble going home at last.

That night when his mother tucked him into his bed,
and placed a good night kiss upon his little head;
Across his face came the most magical grin
as he thought of the day and the unicorn again,

As he drifted off to sleep,
The Moon Rose high and in the glow of its light a bubble soared by..

This is absolutely delightful!!

I just read it to my 7 year old grand daughter and she loved it. She asked if you wrote more stories about the littlest unicorn. She wants more... biggrin.gif
oliverandjazz

As for more I simply dont have a clue,

How is that, a story for six year old kids?
I liked it a lot, for myself, and I am definitely not six year old anymore wink.gif

Hi, Kay. I was away from this site for a while as i am in a poetry festival myself. I know that is so engaging to combine literature and art and i would encourage anyone with a bit of talent to write and thus express oneself in a diffrent way than with images, even if just for a break from drawing. But the two activities can be switched for keeping your interest alive as well used complementary like you did here illustrating your story. Congratulations!
Here is my advice to you:

When you have the writing bug
sip some coffee from a mug
and compose sweet lullabies
or just paint pink butterflies
with a brush of words in rhyme
that forever last in time;
when you put your heart in verse
words can heal just like a nurse
and the dreams have wings and fly
on a fantasy blue sky.

Elena that is a wonderful poem..thank you for sharing it..and thank you for checking out my lil story too.. wink.gif it is merely something i wrote for the lil boy i baby sit. course he is too young for it now being only one year old come valentines, but i shall store it away for when he grows some. I can not make the unicorn as tiny as i want to ..but i dont think it will matter to a very young child..

thanks again for sharing your delightful poem.

Kay, I made some suggestions for your illustrations in the gallery album. I should have made them here. Sorry about that.
I will erase them. Here we go: my feeling is that the tree trunk in all the images is just lightly colored. I would suggest more emphasis and colors to render the bark.
Also the unicorn's horn could be more pointed and longer.Remember small children need more emphasis on things you present like the unicorn's horn.
The rest is fine.
What I admire is the fact that you worked from imagination, I believe.
The story illustrated looks just ready for print. Great job!Bravo!

Thank you Elena for taking the time to give some input..i am merely getting some basics down on paper for the idea..I really would like to do these in watercolor, but i am out of paper at the moment...and alas..my markers are also beginning to run dry,...time for a new art supply order hunh?

i have been to lulu cause i would like to put it in a single book for the little boy, but they want a minimum of 24 pages. this lil book is not going to be much more than maybe 15..i shall have to make it here at home for him then...which will be another lil fun project. also my pastels for the background are actually much darker but for some reason i cant get those colors to show nicely on screen.

i am going to have to switch to a much darker green cause my lighter one is about gone..

thanks again

Kay

ps..you needn't erase your suggestion..i dont mind where they are..thank you.

oh and yes i am indeed working fully from my imagination... wink.gif

Hi, Kay. I just browsed Lulu's website and couldn't find the category for children's books or picture books. What did you enter or how did you find out about the # of pages?

i chose to do a 6x9 hardcopy..but on the front page of their website is a little space for you to get an estimate..and that size requires 24..
