Season's Greeting's everyone My name is Brian David and it is my pleasure to be your host for the #7 Drawchallenge. All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate. Please confine your drawing talents to graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal. No painting please.
To make this fun I have a surprise for this "Holiday Challenge" and that is there will be "2 Parts". And this will challenge your creative side. First Part: I have provided you all with 3 reference photo's to draw from. The first is a picture I took for Parks & Recreation and I thank them for letting me use it. The second, is from my wonderful Mom of our dog I named Tara, she is no longer with us but gave us much love and joy and continues to do so in memory. The third well lets just say my brother hopes no one draws his nose too big...lol...and I thank him for giving me permission to use this photo.
Okay now for the fun... "Part 2"... Those of you who know me I am sure know I love to draw Cartoon's. Well Part 2 is going to be a "Cartoon Challenge". I discovered a great way to try to create cartoon characters and that is I think of a series of my favorite characters and artist, and then I think of what that artist may have drawn next only I draw it. So What I would like to see is for example : I love Peanuts characters, think if the great Charles M Schultz was around what would be his very next character he may create only you draw it. Now that is just an example of one I like. Whatever you create you will be the copyright holder of since it is your very own creation and please be original. Who knows you may even want to keep going with it that surly is a dream of mine and it sure tests your creative side and most of all I hope you all have fun with it. I also thank IslanderNL ( Jeanette) our friend and Moderator for listening and going along with my idea for this challenge. She also said she will be around in case anyone should need her help.
I hope you all have fun and I wish you all a very Happy Holiday and New year.
Cheers! Brian.

oh heck I gotta actually USE my brain for this one
Cyn
Dec 24 2006, 03:33 AM
Yeah, go figure.. We have to use our brains this time.
Venus
Dec 24 2006, 04:12 AM

Umm is it possible to use our brains when we are suppost to be toning out the left side and using the right when we draw?

Hi everyone, I am glad you like the images.....As far as the Brain thing my brothers used to call me BRAIN instead of BRIAN when I was a kid and in fun only because most days I am like the scare crow.
Well I will be the first to post this little fellow...not much but he is all mine...I recently learned of the loss of the great Joseph Barbera and was thinking of him and the late William Hannah two of my favorite creators of "The Flintstones" This fellow reminds me of an old episode with Dr. Synester, I believe was his name.
I think I will simply call him "ART" or "Arty".

Hi Brian......
Now this is a challenge indeed - lots of variety too. A cartoon - hmmmmm!!! Great idea! I've done them before digitally, but guess I'll have to break out the pencils again for this one. As far as that right brain/left brain thing - I have found that lefty can be utilized very handily in initial preparation for a project, deciding the basics such as composition, color pallette and type of media to be used. Then the righit brain can run amuck creatively cuz it has a good starting base.
I love that pic of your dog - she looks like a collie pup? Is there a possibility of getting a close-up view of her showing more detail? I keep wondering where her ears stop and where the shadow begins LOL!
I have to get up at 5am tomorrow, so I'd best try to sleep a bit before Santa comes. I made some chocolate chip cookies for him so hope he'll have a glass of milk with me before he's off again.
Merry Christmas everyone! .....Maire

Thanks Jeanette, I seem to have the opposite problem with portraits they are way out of my comfort zone.
Cyn hun ...what can I say I absolutly love it and think it is an adorable portrait and sketch of my brother. I can't wait to show him and I am sure he will be flattered.

...you are so talented.
Thanks Kim...looking forward to seeing that Cartoon.
Maire...so great to see you joining in. Tara is a Shelty and once won a red ribbon in The Canadian National Ehibition obedience trials and came in 11th place out of 150 dogs,

we were so proud of her. I managed to find one more photo.
Hope everyone is having a great holiday.

Goodness Jeanette. I wish those sketches would just beautifully flow from my pencil like they do yours. I love the dragon too.

My brain is having trouble coming up with a cartoon. I guess I will just pick up a pencil and a pad and see what happens.
Thank you, Brian. Glad you like it. Nice picture of your dog. Who's holding her? Was that you? Cute kid, what little I can see.

Jeanette you always put a smile on my face...hey is your cartoon a dragon...maybe he too has evolved from the stone age...

Very creative I love it, see I knew you could do it, and your portrait of my brother is outstanding you sure have a way with portraits talk about talented, my brother will be thrilled.
Okay Cyn....I am waiting for your Cartoon...lol....I find cartoons are just a bunch of lines , almost like playing connect the dots...

Have fun.

His knees and elbows are because skinny kids have knobby knees and boney elbows.
As for his fingers, I just didn't take the time to draw them. I'm lazy today and still in my jamies.
Hmm, he does not have a name. I never thought of that..

Wonderful drawings so far Brian, Jeanette and Cyn! Thanks so much Brian for the shelty pic - she's a beautiful dog.
These cartoons are of the 3 youngest members of our family on Christmas day. The little girl (18 mos) is very charismatic and wants to do everything the boys do even when they fight back. She kept dancing every time someone made that Santa wiggle around and grabbed the boys' (17 mos and 27 mos) cars every chance she got. But they were all very good for their age. It was a long exciting day for them.

Here is my quickie, done at work so don't know how this will post. (I'm not great with the scanner here.) Done with pencil, a Sharpie & plain old printer paper! May try one of the photos later.

Wow I'Cant Believe It!!! Brian, you have actually gotten Old Dad to commit to joining in on the challenge, I've been trying my darndest to get him to jump in.

"WOW" ....Great to see you drop in Olddad....How are you doing young fellow...

Painter and Cyn...thanks for your help we have to get him to pick up those pencils....I think his family loves cartoon's.
Well here is another of my creations I hope will inspire you some more...I always wanted a little fish character, I call this fellow Snootie the whale. I named him after Snoopy because I think I gave him those shifty eyes of his only reversed. I am just experimenting with colour pencil and ink and am greatly still in the learning stages. I think he is pointing to the ink I accidently smudged on him...lol..
I am glad you are all having fun, Brian.

Lori,
Don't worry about trying this. We are ALL out of the comfort zone except for Brian. I was terrified to even try it and then reluctant to post. I started with the guy and Jeanette said it could be a good start to something, so I quickly sketched him again and put him on the surfboard with waves and realized the surfboard looks like an ironing board and the waves looked like curtains and I couldn't do a window for wind so I did the fan. And..... a cartoon was born by accident. Ha Ha Ha
Nice Snootie the Whale, David.. He has attitude..

Ok BrianD I told you I was gonna do a cartoon character. Here is one I created all on my lonesome. I had alot of fun but also realized areas in which I need to work on when doing figures. I love looking at Kim's fairies so much I decided to draw my own. I named her "Morganiva". I wanted something unique so I made her name up. Anyways hope you all like it as much as I had fun drawing it...

Great challenge by the way!!!

And Cyn...I will say it again I love your cartoon..."accident"... I think he could be a hit...Just remember us when you are famous....lol..

Everyone doing such a great job on the cartoons, has inspired me to try one. I was looking at an old picture of my son the other day (very goofy)and decided to use that as the basis for my cartoon figure. Here is a picture of both. Sorry about the sketchiness of it, I was watching a movie while I was doing it. I also tried to do a picture of Jennifer Aniston while I watched her in the movie, that is very hard to do. Well good practise anyway.

Thanks Everyone!!! Now that I think that I have the human figure almost figured out and clothing and folds in them figured out I think I will try to retry the my little fairy and redo her. I have a long time to go, but I finished my figure drawings clothed and am up to a little more practice before I try to tackle the portraits...:::shudder:::. I am petrified of doing portraits!!! No matter how many times I try I can just not get them to look like the subjects I am trying to draw..

I am thinking the portraits are going to be harder than the perspective was. Hopefully not though!! Talk to everyone soon.

Hi all. You have don such a good job here and those cartoon drawings are all great

I wanna add some too.
Here is one "girl", who should have been on one of my paintings, but shes not, so now she is here...
And snails... One basketball team wanted T-shirt with snails, so i did composition with those four ladies

I know, that they are done in this pic with computer and i also have base drawings of them with pencils, but this version seems so clean and nice. So if it's necassary, i can add pencildrawing of those snails also...
