Full Version: Weekly Drawing Challenge Dec.13-19

Hello fellow Drawspace members! Our host for this week isn't feeling well, so I'll throw up some more pictures to work from. Hope you like my selection of photos. wink.gif

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

1. Puppy (I think a doberman?)
2. Profile view of father & son
3. Hudson River in New York (good for practicing values)
4. Montauk Point Lighthouse on Long Island, New York. Comissioned by President George Washington in 1792.
5. A mandrill at the Bronx Zoo.

Mindy,
You are so special to host the challenge again this week. I know you have your hands full especially at this time of the year but I wanted you to know how much I appreciated it. I am going to have to make some time to do at least one of these. Thank you so much for hosting.

happy.gif Thanks Mumwond and Trish, I don't mind hosting and it helps take my mind off the stress of everything else. However, after this week I think my supply of interesting photos is pretty much exhausted. laugh.gif

Paulette, I don't mind at all, thanks for having me! biggrin.gif I've been around here over a year now and never hosted a weekly challenge, so it's about time I pulled my own weight.

Steve, it's so nice to see you, hope your holiday season is going well. I love your avatar! Jolly ol' Steve. wink.gif

The puppy seems to be the popular one this week. This is a drawing I did a few months ago of the little guy.

Only if you consider 4x5" itty bitty (which it is). I'm not completely satisfied with the faces, but the reference picture doesn't show a lot of contrast, more of a silouette. dry.gif

Can't wait to see your take on the puppy, Carol!
Slaine

Thanks to Mindy for the beautiful photos and to all the participants for their lovely drawings. Here's my mandrille - I guess with that severe cold, ice and snow around, I was tempted by the green leaves around him. It is a drawing with ink pencils, not a watercolour.
Didn't have the patience to finish it, though.
Slaine
wowzers beautiful job sveta17
*Roxy*
Sveta, looks finished to me. Its amazing
Sveta17
Thank you so much!
Mindy__
I agree, it looks like it's finished, and absolutely beautiful! So many colors, so vivid. I know I've said this before Sveta, but you really have a special gift, a uniqueness you put into everything. Thank you for brightening up the day with your drawing. happy.gif
Mindy__
My thanks to everyone who participated this past week. Here's a summary of all the drawings, and as you can see the puppy won best popularity. happy.gif
