I know I am early on the post but will be busy in the morning hours .. so as not to delay those who are of a different time difference other than mine.. I will post now.. All Challenges now and in the past are still open to anyone who chooses to participate ,so don't feel like once a new one comes along the others are closed..
Thanks Chris for going two weeks in a row.. I hope you were blessed with a lot of fun and great paintings of your children.. I enjoyed the practice time .. and the fun with Drawspace friends..

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that's fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that's great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavors to some form of drawing: graphite, colored pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

Oh my goodness ... Everyone so far has amazed me .. Fast to respond to my challenges .. I was hoping you would find something inspiring to draw.. How fun with Ma and Pa.. Great draw !! they are my conversational pieces at home .. Was given to me as a present .. Ma going after Pa with that rolling pin to keep him in shape.. Looks like she took good aim on his front tooth and he paid her back with replacing it with Gold.. His Adams Apple is so funny .. I will have to take a picture of his backside.. He is so skinny his spine sticks out .. I laugh every time I look at those two..
Samantha ..Raidor just captured her plea to stop with the camera in her face.. and her sister Kaitlyn with her undying love for animals .. Never ever fears them no matter how big they are.. She is like me .. We love Horses !!! thanks Mark..
Anxious to see more.. !!

Carol - decisions, decisions! I've still 5 dogs to do, so I'll decide while I'm doing them. Super pictures. Thanks a lot.

An .. you have really got her .. those eyes are unmistakeably pleading.. those two sisters grew up with a camera in their faces every time they turned around.. Samantha is 9 now and Kaitlyn is 8 they have since decided if they make goofy faces they will eventually stop snapping photo's..I chose this one for exactly that .. expression..!! I am working on this one in steps.. will post it soon..

Oh yes .. a natural Mark.. I have used a grid in the past and found it to be unsettling when I went in to erase.. besides the fact of still not seeing the face correctly.. now after a few years I am able to lightly sketch and use my brush to do the work.. everyone has a way of getting to where it looks human and portraiture is probably one of the most challenging.. if you get those eyes right half the battle is won.. for me anyway..
I was worried about the pictures for the challenge.. hopefully something for everyone I am familiar with.. and perhaps we can all have fun in the process of learning ..

Superb! Carol! You've really got her. It's a great challenge to draw figures in WC. Everything is expressive and hard to render in this portrait, the eyes, the nose, the smile, the teeth and... the hands, a real challenge and a real pleasure to draw. Thank again for the WC and for the photos. I'll come again.

You did this one very well !!!.. looks like an illustration for a book doesn't it.. That big boy lives in the Pasture land across the road from my front yard...beautiful animal isn't he. such curious cattle.. they will come right up to you to get a better look.. I was hoping to get some pictures of the calves but they have been moved them out along with their mother cows..Maybe in the spring I will be a little faster at photographing.. . Thanks O'Flahertie !!!

Now, this certainly did not take me 2.5h, laugh.gif

Ink pen, no grid, no eraser, so mistakes remain mistakes!!

JacquiP
Everone has been doing such fantastic work. Great portraits and animals and stunning watch. I did a sketch last night, will scan and post it later. Certainly lots to be inspired by here.

Jacqui...anxious to see what you have done..

Thanks Chris.. hope you have slowed down enough to join in for few ..

I'm still reeling from the pocket watch !
JacquiP
Well here is my rough attempt. It is pencil A5. If I have time I might try painting hiim as well. I don't normally do animals, apart from poorly drawn cats, and am trying to expand in that area. Hope he makes you smile.

I tried Samantha with my new set of Derwnt Tinted Charcoals. I think I like them - it's so easy to get darks. I'm thinking of trying the horse and wee girl.
