Full Version: SKETCHING FROM LIFE - JANUARY 5-12
Drawspace > General > General discussion
IslanderNL
Daily drawing is an essential to help you grow and learn as an artist. If you draw something daily, you will find over a period of time that your ability to see shapes and translate them onto paper will have dramatically increased. You will draw more quickly and more efficiently and will render what you see much better.

The traditional drawing class uses real objects to draw from, not references. To study an object in front of you shows you a 3 dimensional image whereas in a reference photo it is one dimensional. The benefits to drawing from life are enormous and so rewarding.

This weekly sketching challenge is designed to encourage people to sketch more quickly, to sketch outside and to sketch in public.

Now here is the meat of the thread. This is a list of objects that you may choose to draw from.

You can choose one thing or 10 things.
They must be sketched from life, not imagination or photographs.
You can use any medium that you like.
When you've drawn your image, then post it here.
You have 7 days to draw items from this list.
There will be no commenting on sketches.

Teddy bear
Yarn
Nail polish
Pearls
Bow
One of your gifts opened
Dice
someones eye
playing cards
Pop Corn
Glove
Light Bulb
Cookie
Pair of glasses
Pillow
Marble

This list is from Kim1963. Thanks Kim!

I'm glad to see the sketching thread back. Good call Rose. I just thought I must have missed a comment over the holidays about not having one for a while. blush.gif

Great glasses. I saw them on the other thread 3 minutes ago. You must have been psychic. laugh.gif

The last item, "Marble"
Is that the stone, or the round glass things children play with?

Actually, it could be either one, but I bet she meant the child's toy.

Since I spoke up I s'pose I have to draw something.
Hmmm... I have some marbles of the toy variety, but I don't know where to find any marble of the stone variety.

I guess I'll have to go walking around with a pocket full of marbles and a sketch pad...
Who can I call for bail money??

laugh.gif Darus...don't look at me I am a poor "starving artist"... laugh.gif
kim1963
Rose you did a outstanding job on the glasses and card and polish and pearls.....such detail .
it could be either a toy or the other kind of marble . smile.gif
racedolls
well finally some sketches-- pillow, glasses and nail polish. nice to get back into it.

Argh.
I just did a halfway decent sketch of my glasses, but I made the mistake
of doing it on the back of a page from my page-a-day calendar. The printing on
the other side of the paper shows through and looks like crud if I scan it.
I need to leave a sketch pad here at work.

And I need to find my marbles. (You can interpret that ANY way you like. smile.gif )
Pammy
*sigh* I have losted my marbles.
IslanderNL
Great sketches Lori. I love the pillow it looks so soft and plump.

You know Darus, sometimes sketches on things other than plain paper can look interesting. Try a page from an old telephone book or a newspaper and just draw right over it. You never know what you'll produce. smile.gif

Looking under the sofa for Pammy's marbles....darn cat plays cat hockey with them....

Here's a teddy bear. Its one sold by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation initiative 'Forever Hope'.

Hey Pammy, I think I found some of your marbles...

And now I can prove that I haven't lost all my marbles.
I just couldn't find anything made of marble. I was hoping to find a dish or ashtray, or something like that.

All the weird reflections and refractions sure makes drawing glass "interesting"
kim1963
Lori nice eye glasses .. I drew mine but I had to take them off to draw them .. so not so good lol ..I am the only one in my house who wears glasses .
Jeanette .. your marbles are completly out of this world ..awsome job !
Darus .. nice glasses as well .. as i said mine well I had a hard time seeing them .. but ROSE'S glasses we awsome and inspired me to try .
darus67
Fortunately for me (in this case, anyway), I'm nearsighted, so I can see fine
up close without my glasses. I usually only wear them for driving or watching TV.

Nice d4 there, Kim. I considered digging out my polyhedral dice, but
considering how bad my 2d6 looked, I'm glad I didn't try anything more complex.

I think drawing on anything busier than lined paper would be too distracting. Even that throws me off sometimes.
kim1963
I have a bag full of polyhedro Dice for playing D & D ....all colors ...was not sure anyone would know what it was lol .
racedolls
wow the marbles look great nice job jeanette and darius. i think i might have to try that now.
thanks kim and your pearls and eye looks great and that other one(its a little small for me to see)

Doesn't everyone?? blink.gif

I used to play D&D a bunch when I was in college. In fact, my handle here, darus, was
the name of a long running D&D character of mine. I started using it as a handle on
computer BBSes even before this internet thing took off.
kim1963
I play now online .. its a fun game the DM is a wonderful story teller ...and we have like 4 players and have been playing for well about a year same game . ...very fun .
darus67
Is everyone so distracted by the portrait class that they're not sketching?

I was a bad boy and didn't sketch anything yesterday. sad.gif
