Full Version: Drawspace Challenge 14-20 March
Drawspace > Activities and Challenges > Challenges
O'Flahertie
Welcome, and I hope you'll enjoy the pictures!

All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that?€™s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that?€™s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

You will be challenged by some aspect of all references most likely as you all will have different strengths and weaknesses in your ability to translate the images to paper.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

I have offered 3-5 reference images to choose from. The images are also provided in greyscale. Seeing the images in black and white gives a better sense of basic values.

I have kept the images to simple shapes that still provide challenges. Block out your basic shapes first then work the details into them, rechecking proportion and measurement against other reference points in your drawing.

If you have an interest in hosting a challenge, please see the list in the pinned area of general discussions.

I must agree Carol. Great choice to use your colors and a lovely piece as well. I think it captures more than the picture.
texaslady-59
yeah Monika you know me pretty well...just graphite was not going to do that picture any justice for me.. however I could see it with a hint of color .. Sort of reminds me of the photography they use to use in those Older Life Magazines.. wink.gif

That is funny Chris.. Being a hairdresser you should just pretend that your pencil or brush is the comb and just comb the hair with color add a few highlights and sgraggly flyaways I really do enjoy watercolors but the pencils are giving me more patience with details.. tell those kids thanks but they do have a pretty wonderful Mom Artist too after all she helped to create them ..

It's my turn now. biggrin.gif This is my contribution for this week, a lovely Amanda. This is my first colored pencil drawing that is larger than 2.5 x 3.5. The paper was very grainy, something I'm totally not used to and I found it rather difficult to work with. It was a new kind of paper I bought for my new graphite portrait and I thought I'll use it for this challenge. Hmm.. not sure I'll use it for colored pencils again unless of course I'm going for that grainy look. Navigating around her face was probably the most difficult. All in all this was a good challenge. Thank you for hosting this week O'Flahertie!!

Thanks guys. Despite challenges I was having real fun with this one. Now I want to try and learn to do portraits in color pencil. I went to the local art store and got myself a set of Prismacolors (I found a list of colors the best for portraits on WetCanvas), about 25 pencils. I love them and I'm so excited to start learning.. laugh.gif
