Many aspiring artists simply jump into drawing without taking the time to discover their natural hand movement. As a matter of fact, most people don’t even know they have one! This section explores the natural hand movement of Leonardo da Vinci, and helps
you find yours.

Very interesting. I am right handed and found out that my natural flow is from the bottom left corner to the upper right.
If it had not been for this lesson, I would have never noticed.
From now on I'll try to incorporate the page turning method and see how that works out.
Thanks

Thank you - very interesting article. I have difficulty finding a natural hand movement due to previously fractured finger and now arthritis. I will certainly keep trying these methods to find out which is the most comfortable and natural movement for me.

Not going to lie. I was one of those who didn't know that I had a natural hand movement. Now that I've done this lesson, I found that I have one! Mine generally flows from upper left to lower right, on a slant and left to right on vertical and horizontal lines. And, I loved your note at the end about signing and dating the page and then smiling. For something so simple, I feel really accomplished! biggrin.gif

Good lesson I kinda do that already without thinking about it but it was fun! Was Leonardo really left handed though? My natural movement seems to be lower left to upper right, and I am right handed. Go figure.
Thanks so much!

I'm an over the road truck driver and find myself sitting quite a lot while waiting to be loaded or unload. I've been wanting to learn how to draw what I see on the road and keep it for my memories further down the road. I like your approach to this way of drawing and look forward to learning and getting better with time. Thank you for making this possible.

Yep....I'm one of the many "jump right in" artist..I've not developed my natural hand movements. I confess i simply just draw!
like Denarius stated. injuries and arthritis have made it a bit more difficult for me to to pinpoint one certain way....i have to switch up as the arthritis takes over...lol but i never quit. i'll continue to practice practice practice

Great exercise!

I'm left-handed, but it feels like my natural motion is from upper-right to lower-left. At first I thought it would be upper-left to lower-right. After running through this a bit, I noticed that the upper-right to lower-left motion probably stems from when I was in elementary school, and was trained to write by curving my wrist above the line I was writing on, so I could see what I had just written, and thus write more quickly with less interruption.

Amazing how easy it is to slip out of using the natural motion. I have to drill myself on rotating the paper!

Hi all,

Got a simple question for you, which could have huge effects on my results (at least initially).

Don't know if its something I need to work on or not, but when I write & draw, I tend to support my arm on the table and move at the wrist. Should I be lifting my arm off the table and moving my whole arm?

Basically, should I stop supporting my arm and stop drawing from the wrist?
