All levels of drawing are encouraged to participate!

The goal of this thread is to enable and encourage individuals to practice their drawing skills, learn new techniques and have fun! If you just want to sketch that’s fine. If you want to create a complex, detailed drawing, that’s great too. You will get out of this what you want. The references used are from my own personal reference library of images that I have photographed and I release them here as not under copyright, meaning you can use them as you wish for drawing.

Reminder:

This is a DRAWING challenge. Therefore please confine your artistic endeavours to some form of drawing: graphite, coloured pencil, pen and ink or charcoal.

There is no ruling on what size your final drawing or sketch should be. Smaller, sketchbook sizes will provide a smaller file size which is easier for loading onto the thread.

If you would like assistance or advice, please ask for it and I will be more than willing to try to guide you.

This challenge will last for one week. At that time, all challenge drawings should be submitted to this thread.

Oh yes, I see it now. I hadn't a clue. At first I thought it was some kind of desk pencil stand! Amazing what you can see if you've no idea of the size involved.
oliverandjazz
thank you kim, she is lovely,..it could have been better if i had used a grid and i would have if i was doing it for someone, but i am now trying to NOT USE THE GRID..and see what i have learned by using a grid for the last 5 years..i have far to go i understand, but i am testing my abilities i guess you would say..oh yes..challenging my abilities wink.gif

I chose that picture because it was indeed a fun one, and i couldnt help smiling too.. biggrin.gif
kim1963

kim1963
Kaly yes nice portrait .. and in one hour thats impressive ...you have come so far in your art smile.gif

Texas ...Kayela my daughter in the pics was a model for a store called Jacobsons when she was around 4-5-6 but she tired of the kids calling her names at school so one day she asked me if it was ok to not do it anymore and well we always did it for fun even though at 6 when she would work she made 75.00 a hour and got to spend a big share of her earnings ..we took her to the bank to open a account under us and she would cash her checks and put money in her account .
Once it became no fun at that age we just let it alone ....today she is a bright kid at 17 ...she in 10 th grade was accepted for a 2 year program at G.M. General Motors she studied there for half the day of school ...in the end she designed a glove to save G.M. money ..presented it to the higher ups and they now use this glove ....they were very impressed by her .....now in her 12th year of school she has been again accepted into another program that has her working for a BIG electric company here in lansing Mi and at the end of her school year will offer 10 out of 20 kids picked from hundereds of kids.. a full time job ....her boss called me at home to just let us know how she is doing and to let me know he really likes kayelas work .. this next week she has lunch with the Board of Commisioners .
Am I proud ....oh yeah I am proud ..sorry to go on but in these days so many kids get lost in the shuffle ..I am blessed mine are doing fine .

Kim.. sometimes we must trust our Children's desires.. Looks as tho you have given her the best gift ever in allowing her to follow what she felt was important to her.. I love that we can stand back and look at what marvelous young men and women have achieved when parents pay close attention.. Appears in most cases, not all, when they go wrong it's because parents are too busy to Just Listen.. It's wonderful to see a successful child.. They don't Just Happen..
You and your family should be very proud.. Anytime that we feel like whipping out those photo's and sharing the story's behind them .. I say .. do it .. !! I for one am excited for you and the future of your Daughter.. The children now are this worlds saving grace..
Thanks Kim for your story..

Hi Kim
Loved the pride in your daughter - it's great when they are doing well. Luckily all my three are doing well too and I've got grandchildren who are also making me proud - my late husband and I must have done something right!
I tried this knitted cover - it would have been hard to knit and also hard to draw. It just measures about 6 x 5ins. It would maybe have been easier if I'd made it bigger.

Wow it turned out great! I think the details would have consumed me on that one... wink.gif
kim1963
Thank you ..I do feel blessed .

Kay your hornet is very good ..alot of detail ...these were some fun pics !

The afhagan looks beautiful .. thats very hard to do .. I drew one once and it got as far as showing my mom and now it hangs in her livingroom ...very well done .

if you are alergic, you shouldn't make them so realistic!! tongue.gif its not safe!!!
Mindy__
Thought I'd kill three birds with one stone here... tongue.gif I know it's not perfect, it's just freehand without a grid. About 90 minutes.

Mindy.. Your imagination is about the wildest one I know of.. I love the way you put the Composition together !!!
kim1963
Mindy very cool idea hun .. and well done .. love the hornet on the peaches .

I did a real quick drawing of the hornet .. I used the wrong colors I think .
oliverandjazz
kim, is this wasp eating a spider? that is what it looks like to me..and i kept saying where is his antennae..i thought these things had antennae..i thought his atennae was a larvae of some sort at first huh.gif nice work on him

Norma, that is a lovely piece and you really got that crochet look to it
Mindy way to go ..you did a wonderful job on yours too and i like your comp.

kim1963
Kay that is crazy .. I ask my husband and he said no not that he knew ...I looked at the very large image in my PSP and guess what ??? he is feasting on a spider lol ,,I showed my husband and he said wow ... never did he ever notice that and it is one of his favorite pictures ...I see you drew it eating a spider lol nice eye .

when the shot was taken he used a high powered lens so he was not real close to the Hornet . crazy thou .. now he is even prouder of that pic lol .
mumwond
I tried to draw your lovely daughter with soft pastels. It just measures about 6 x7"
oliverandjazz
you are a brave one norma..that is lovely..

Kim, I have never really given the bees, wasp, hornets etc much thought..they all sting and fly..until actually drawing this pic.
for instance keeping in mind that I am not an entomologist (the study of all things creepy and crawly)..
the wasp is built very much like the ant only with wings..hmm..never really gave that much thought
also the bumble bee and what we call the white *** hornet up here only have a uni body..meaning no waistline like the wasp, they are fat unibody bumblers that really shouldnt even be able to fly.
also that antennae. being so close up and looking so much like a larvae to me, i was wondering if that may some kind of 'bait' for some insects
anyhoot..just musing on these lil thoughts that never really gave much rise to my attention before wink.gif
kim1963
My daughter is loving her collection of portraits ...very nice work on the pastels .

His close up mico lens is awsome you see so much detail when you upload the shots ....course we did not see the spider so clearly in the hornets mouth .lol
oliverandjazz
ok here is a challenge in a couple of ways..today my new pan watercolors came in, i have never used these in my life but i think i am going to enjoy them once i get to learn some things about them.so i tried the giraffe in them..my very first watercolor (not the pencil) ..i dont think he came out that awful for a very first try.

mumwond
Hi Kay
That's brilliant for a first go at watercolour! How did you manage the eyelashes? I'm going to try the giraffe tomorrow with coloured pencils - it's too dark just now and the lights in this room are useless for colour.

Cars take a lot of attention , especially when they are commission work .. I have painted many many cars and find them fun to do if you are doing them for yourself .. When someone asks you to paint their pride and joy ,especially men , they get Very Very picky .. everything has to be exactly right .. Needless to say if it's a painting, sometimes they get disappointed when it doesn't shine exactly right or if the color is not true.. Very very hard to match some paint jobs.. I stopped doing them for commissions and now take my own pictures and do them my way.. close as I can get without just handing them a photo..
I am working on a series for our towns Yearly Car Show and Cruise night .. I have to have 16 done by the end of July .. I have 6 and a half done .. Will post the one I am working on tonight or tomorrow.. It isn't a Classic Car mind you but rather a Classic Coke Cola Truck.. The photo was given to me by my 93 year old friend and wants me to paint it for the Show.. I am here to tell you .. the Truck itself was a piece of cake but all the background setting (brick and windows) were a challenge.. The picture was taken by her son when he was in England .. You will notice the Steering column is on the English side..
Okay enough of my rambling ..
Kay I just wanted to say .. I admire the Car Challenge you did.. Great Job !! Carol
oliverandjazz
thank you carol, I have never wanted to be like a 'car artist' but i have always wanted to be able to understand how it is done. I really struggled in this area..Drawspace has helped so much that i can at least draw something resembling a car..i had some really nice artist here at drawspace help me and that is the only reason i can draw them to the extent that i do. i still love to practice them and just admire it when someone draws a really sexy car..i am looking forward to seeing your car works too.I am sure they will be more lovely than the car you are painting

I suppose I address everything I do the same .. Perhaps it is a different subject matter but it's like everything with me .. If it Excites me I suspect it will turn out the way my mind sees it.. Same with Cars or A human form..
Now Flowers?? That is a Whole different subject.. I totally do not get excited when I see a flower.. Is that just Crazy or what ? .. everyone else did so well and easily I am certain...I did the Card Trade to push myself in to it and I failed I think miserably.. I love to see a Master Artist whip them out of their brushes and I stand amazed.. I have never been able to see the structure that goes into a flower petal by petal.. Perhaps that side of my brain ceases to function.. I start out with good intentions and end up with what I think is an Abstract mumbo jumbo..Ha ! Give me Flesh and Steel and I'm in business..
At least you went for the lessons on getting them to look like a car..I took a class on Flowers 3 years ago and even my instructor laughed.. Kudo's Kay !!

Sonia, what a very pretty name.. the picture makes you smile as you work from it doesnt it? i couldnt help but having a big grin on my face as i attempted to draw her..you have captured the fun of the picture i think..whether or not it is a perfect piece. and seeing how vibrant these pastels can be, makes me want to finish up the tinted charcoal pencils that i have and just go with the pastels because the spectrum of color is more variant..the tinted charcoal only has 24 colors and some of them so close to each other they need not even be a seperate pencil. and the two mediums seems to operate basically the same.

have a good day happy.gif
kim1963
Kay you are busy lol the giraffe and car are great ...cars are hard as texas said ..I know I have only drawn one for a birthday card lol

Sonia ..lovely .. she likes them all ...we will print them and add them side by side in a frame to hang on her wall ...kinda the Andy Warhol kinda thing lol
Mindy__
The giraffe was a tall order wink.gif , but I've given it a try... About 2 hours, finished size 4" x 5"
oliverandjazz
mindy..that is a really lovely piece work..very well done my friend
