Any caricature artists here? I'm looking to experiment with them. I've always admired the guys who work 'in front of the crowd' and crank one out in 5 minutes.

Give me a yell.

Hi Matt,

I'm a caricature artist smile.gif I've worked at Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Orlando, and Citywalk. It's definately a fun job. Are you a caricature artist too?
ukartist
hello there

I love cartoons am just starting out as an artist i have drawn some cartoons that i have copied from books

in my gallery

Hiyas
I love watching caricature artists work, especially in the streets. There's even a part of me mind that always want to be one of them someday. happy.gif

Caricature artists are cool and their results are always amusing but I can never see myself as one. For some reason I don't have an eye for it. I would rather draw their real look that try to give some unrealistic face. I would be afraid the person who wears the face might be offended.

I could just see it now: Someone asks me to draw their whole body and...

blink.gif mad.gif "I don't have a big butt like that!"

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif LOL now that would be funny!!!!!!

Believe me it happens, but usually it's all in good fun and the people who asks or pays to be drawn usually has a pretty good sense of humor. Of course part of being a good live caricature artist is that you learn to read with whom you can have more fun.

It's a great job. I do both portraits and caricatures. I love portraits, but caricatures keep things interesting and it's never boring if you truly draw people individualy and don't fall into formulas. And drawing quickly is where the magic happens. I highly recommend trying it out. even at with your friends. most people will love you for it.

Hey guys! I'd never call myself good at it but I am also facinated with carictures and the guys that do em. I recently got a book on it and did some (In muh gallery too) And the book really helped. I could give you the name if you'd like
Aviation
Yeah it still looks fun but I don't know how I would forget everything I know about drawing- like you said"falling out of formulas"- because one thing I enjoy about drawing is shading.

It was funny when my sister came home with a caricature done of her- and to this day we still make fun of her- because she looked a lot like Bette Midler! If she didn't wear her glasses that day instead of her usuall contacts the drawing wouldn't look like Midler because the artist drew these old fashioned looking glasses on her.

But yeah it is all in good fun.
vhpayes
Well, if you enjoy shading there is no reason why you can't do them in a caricature. check out

Ofcourse does aren't done in quickly, but even the quick ones can be done with some shading.

Here I'm posting some examples of colored and one black n white with a little shading. None of them took more than 20 minutes. actually, for me 20 minutes is too long.
Aviation
Wow! I have never seen caricatures done like that! Those are really good!
Sketch Fiend
yeah, are you the guy with out one?
Aviation
Without one what??!
Sketch Fiend
I was talking to vhpayes... wondering if he was the one without a caricature in front of him. sorry. i shoulda quoted
vhpayes
Hi, Yes, I'm the one without a caricature standing there all proud of himself. biggrin.gif
Aviation
Haha, I was wondering about that. I thought maybe he was the teacher, if that is a class at all.
vhpayes
laugh.gif Not a class, just a group of friends that were leaving for Brazil and asked me to draw them before they went. I don't have any of the ones from work, but they're pretty similar. I try not to take more than 15 minutes for a fully airbrushed color one and the black and whites are about 3 to 5 minutes.

I haven't decided what I like most yet, caricatures or portraits.

It's funny, I haven't seen any posts or replies from the one who started this thread.

But, now I'm curious to know what you guys think of caricatures.
ukartist
well i love your art vhpayes u have talant tongue.gif

painter48
Ditto on that one ukartist - he is very talented.
vhpayes
Thank you So much for the compliments. But actually, I meant, what do you think of Caricatures in general?
If you like them, do you like the cartoony ones, the exagerated ones, or the ones that are more like portraits?
Venus
sleep.gif Ok let me start out saying I love caricatures. I can't draw them or portraits. I am trying on the portraits though. Vhpayes your work it awesome. I think I personally like the funny caricatures as well as the portrait looking ones. I have a caricature somewhere of my family I just don't know where it is. Plus I have had two more children since this particular drawing was done. I am amazed at how quick and good the pictures come out with the amount of time the artist have to draw them. wub.gif
